Thanks everyone for all your lovely comments! Genuinely. This video is one of my favourite videos that I've ever made so it means a lot.
    Here are the main exercises:
Direction (for me) can be a byproduct of the following three things:
    1. Feeling like your timeline is finite
    2. Understanding that compromise is inevitable
    3. Cultivating self-belief
Exercises for cultivating those three things:
    FINITE TIMELINE:
(Both corny questions, but they work)
    1. What would you do if you had X amount of time to live?
X Can be 6 months, 5 years, or 20. Whatever time amount gets you excited.
    2. What would you do if you knew you couldn't fail?
    COMPROMISE IS INEVITABLE:
What does the __(see list)__ side of you want for your life?
    • Sensible
    • Lifestyle-orientated
    • Relationship-orientated
    • Ambitious
    • Altruistic
    Write down any commonalities.
    SELF BELIEF:
Recognise the unconscious rules you live your life by and question them until you find their root.
    PUTTING IT ALL TOGETHER:
    1. Write down everything you wanted 5 years ago.
    2. Write down everything you want now.
    3. Write down everything you think you'll want in 5 years
Now write a small description of your ideal life, covering what you do, who you're with, and where you are - and don't overthink it. You can change it whenever, but for now, it's a pretty good guess at your direction in life.
    Hope that helps!!

Its really hard to find someone who talks about self improvement without making it feel that cringy / unrealistic
    Just wholesome content

It's hard to find someone who talks about self-improvement without promoting the idea that you just need to force yourself to do things and have more "discipline." These kinds of exercises are so similar to what I already do/what has worked for me, so it's nice to find content that gives me more ideas and expands on what I already know is constructive.

In the "everything that you want now" exercise I just wrote out of the blue:
"Learn that self love is something that I should give myself unconditionally and that it's not reward or something that I have to earn" and idk I find it weirdly inspirational.
So if you read this, you are worthy of loving yourself❤

Thanks for sharing - it’s dawned on my self that I know only one person that knows my every hardship, every success, and every mundane moment in life - me. My self may try to ignore my love but can never deny of its omnipresence. At some point, hopefully with practice, my self opens up and accepts all of my love.
I hadn’t reflected on this deeply enough, but my love is unconditional in those I care about. I’ve always given them my patience and understanding for their failures and successes. I know that they will strive and stumble through moments at various stages in life. My unconditional love is there for others whether they need it or not. Likewise, if my family and friends express their love, I can’t deny it. It’s not mine to deny. And the same goes for my self-love - ignorable, for sure, but never outright deniable.

Hey Campbell, I might be early enough for you to catch this, so I hope you get to read this. I was pretty depressed at the start of this year. Lockdown and the resulting remote work had me down in the dumps and my motivation hit rock bottom. Watching your videos has been the first stepping stone for getting out of that situation. Since then I've binged your content, read the book, did a lot of introspection and made changes in my life. This year I finally made the jump to running my own business part time, I'm currently 4 months sober and I'm in a totally different place mentally then a year ago. This has taken me a lot of work, and there have been rough patches for sure, but I couldn't be happier with how this year turned out and I want to thank you for being a big part of that change. You are truely changing lives for the better.

As someone with similar old dreams I have another explanation. At least for myself. Daydreaming is safe. It's a fantasy that is at its most beautiful precisely because it is far away. Really going for it means you have to get closer and face reality, which has a very real chance of disappointing you.
Also, if you don't follow your dreams, you can then reason with yourself that you haven't really failed. Since you never actually tried.
    I still have other dreams.
Time for some new years resolutions I guess. Which by the way, would be interesting for me to watch from your perspective. :)

I used to an aspiring software engineer back when I was 20. But I wasn't willing to put aside 60+ hours per week before the computer. Data structures and algorithms all bored me to the bone. Imposter syndrome was all on a rage and many times I questioned my own motives, my own "whys".
It wasn't easy to find an answer to such a big question, but now I do.
Often times it's because of the lifestyle it promises and the person that job would make me. Plus the insecurities of being an indie developer and the fact that you have to manage everything yourself.
Quitting it has been more or less a good decision.

You can always go back to school in time, when or if you are ready ( i started uni at 40!). If you need time out then that's what you do, give yourself time to work out where your life goes next - the world is so fast with everyone rushing around trying to get so much done. Slowing on down is ok!. With anxiety I found things helped if I may share. 1 a quote: most of my worries in life were things that never happened. Thinking logically have all of your worries come true? Some may but not all of them. So breathe through it and try not to worry so much. 2 you are clever, you can problem solve - how many problems have you failed to solve? Maybe some because that's life but the majority of them you have dealt with. I dont know what you are anxious about but you are not powerless. Sometimes the solution just takes a little time to come. 3 think of yourself in 3 months time or 6 months time, just laughing at yourself because you were worried about that thing. It might make the thing feel smaller. I remind myself all the time of the science of anxiety - it kicks in fast and overrides the reasoning part of the brain so it's hard to argue with your anxiety. I mentally hit it with a baseball bat and give myself time to take a breath and think it through. I hope you are doing ok.

@@FilipKotula hope you're doing better than when you posted your comment 4 months ago, even a little.
I didnt go back to school until i was 21 after I graduated and I find the thing I've observed the most is that a lot of people would really benefit from a year or two away from a more rigid school environment to just let their soul breathe. Even now at 23 I ended up deferring for a year just because it felt like pushing myself to keep doing something, even art focused, wasn't going to be beneficial for being able to absorb whatever it is I wanted to learn because of my state of mind. I'm really glad I listened to that feeling because this year hasnt been amazing for me either, my cat died a few months ago super suddenly and there's been a lot of weird ups and downs of motivational energy and general outlook on things like, "things are fine" and "things suck real hard but what can you do". I guess this is where i've found myself like you and most others in the comments here to see what things i can try to steer myself in a more helpful direction
my main point thought with that whole block of text is that, if school is where you really want to go back to and finish and follow through, amazing, but don't rush yourself. if you dont feel ready or in the right state of mind, thats okay. take the time to sort out whats been in the back of the brain archives n just actually live life for a little bit.
Like you said, you deserve a break and the time to just gather your thoughts and put the foundations for a healthier and more pleasant state of being. be patient and kind to yourself, theres a lot to learn and relearn when it comes to thought patterns and learned response but you'll get to where you wanna be in time :) School will be there when you're ready, take care of yourself first.

I am the musician who quit her job two years ago to "pursue my passion" and I totally resonated with what you said about it being "much harder than expected and how we thought it would be easy cause we love it."
There are parts of the job that are difficult (finding the money + social media for me) and parts of the job that are fulfilling (creating music + connecting with people around the thing you create). And I didn't realize how much work it would take. I put in the work but it's leaving me tired and wondering, can I carry on like this? Is this sustainable in the long run??? Hence, the timing of this video is impeccable. Did the first exercise but the bosses analogy is soo gooood!
Calling out inevitable compromise is wise. Reminds me of something Mark Manson said. Everything is shit sometimes so what shit sandwich are you willing to eat.

I started an office job doing admin at a law firm less than 2 weeks after my final uni exam in order to avoid bad MH over summer/post-graduation from not having anything to do, but I recently realised I'm wasting the creative talents I cultivated when I was younger. The notes I took from this have helped me see and understand what drives me and what I want to aim for, and I'm feeling so much better about the things that lie before me.
The "not choosing a path is choosing a path" part really resonated with me. Retreating into your comfort zone during a difficult few years is only a temporary solution, and I think this video is one of a few new things in my life to help me start to come out of that shell and really go after what I want and live a purposeful life. Thank you.

My daughter (she’s 10) was told yesterday that she needs to start thinking about her career which made me flip out. I think I’ll watch this video with her while emphasizing her job right now and for the next couple years is exploration.

I don't why people think a child has to decide 'right now' what their career is going to be. It's ridiculous. Let them just be a child and use their imagination and play. She doesn't need to watch this video. She just needs to be kid. How else do you find out who you want to be?

Dude, first of all, I friggen love you. Every single video you do just hits home.
This video feels so aligned with my current journey at the moment. I deffo relate to the impending finite timeline. I'm 33 and feel like I missed out on time in my 20s to actually do something, I also have health anxiety and am always afraid of dying at every friggen moment, but this 'fear of death' thing is actually super motivating and I've done more in this past year than I ever have in my creative career, and got to admit, I'm super excited. No idea where it's heading, but I've got a direction and curiosity is leading the way.
    Keep making awesome vids dude.

This is one of the best videos I’ve ever seen on the internet and I am not lyin, I am jaw drop impressed with the compression and versatile amount of information that you were able to put in one video to make people not only question their life and the direction but set them up with an idea, step ladder and general idea and direction someone can actually take to start the building blocks of moving forward. That’s more than what I’ve ever got from any social worker or anybody I’ve tried to get from society around me as has miserably failed. This makes one question their trauma and beliefs and I just respect how well it cuts deep and does what others don’t do well as society is as I see it overall falling apart around me and people are ridiculous and wild 👀.It’s videos like this that put a bit of hope back in my life. So thank you, video accomplished correctly, well done sir 👌🏻👍🏻

But then i stopped.. and did one of your prompts, almost didnt then realized i was being one of those people lol. anywho asked myself, if i had certain amount of time to live what i would do, and its literally what im working on now. So that makes me feel better and see that im actually working towards my dreams and goals and not what society or whoever expects out of me. I just gotta believe in myself and put in the work! Thank u so much.

Hey Cam, just wanted to say thanks for this man. I just tried the “if you had X time to live” today, that’s the only one I had time for. And it still helped so much more than I thought it could. I came to some realizations I never even considered before, and never would have. Even though I feel relatively on top of my life, this was still really valuable. So, I wanted to leave this comment because of some advice you gave in another video, “If you think a compliment, just say it out loud, everyone is better off.” So I did. Love your advice and your vibe man. Thanks again. All the best.

I found the part of your book where you asked where the opinions you think are yours have actually come from. Found a few 'well meaning' folks in some of my core beliefs. Slowly directing those beliefs to the door.
I think also looking at good friends helps here. Not the friends who you know only from their highlights reel on social media, but people you've shared the ups and downs with. An old school friend of mine has just begun a compromise job in her dream city, and the location makes the job compromise worth it. She's having such a good time. I'm stoked for her and want the same for myself. Kicked me into action I can tell you

Love you, dude! :* This musician story is me almost to a tee. I was in many bands, though, but none of them were commercially viable. I actually felt really fulfilled, but 30's came and I understood that people my age have carriers now and I just have good times to think back on. This video and exercises presentes are worth at least 3 sessions with a good therapist.
