i feel like you would really enjoy their 2021 FESTA (Yearly Anniversary Celebration of the Group&Fans) BTS ROOM Live Performance. It's a Mash-up of a LOT of different songs, a little trip through their songs from oldest to newest and gives you a good sample of their catalogue. It also highlights a few of their pure rap songs! I would recommend also watch BTS Festa Room Live 2021. This is a medley of songs performed live, where they’re also up and moving around a little bit more. The songs included in the performance range from their first album in 2013 to their most recent album in 2020.
Just a little background, “Festa” is what they call the annual celebration of their birthday as a group, from their debut date 6/13/13. They usually drop a lot of freebie content for their fans during the first couple weeks of June. This video came from the 2021 Festa.

there definitely is a backtrack, to give the performance a fuller sound and to patch little adlibs here and there that was originally done in the studio version. but in this performance, the backtrack can be easily picked apart from the live vocals, which is why it's my absolute favorite video when i just wanna bask in their voices!

RM, who is the guy in the denim suit, is quite fluent in English. In fact he has addressed the UN General Assembly in English. Just so you understand Jungkook and Jimin do most of the background vocals so they have to do a backing track to do all the harmonies. But he is used to doing all the harmonies so that was the reason for raising the mic to his mouth. It wasn't lip sync per se. The dedicated Baritone is V the one with the tie, even though while he was doing english he started singing higher. They are not all fluent in English just RM (the one with the blue hair) he also speaks in Japanese along with Jimin the one on the right end.

For the "lip-sync" part, I think that what happened was that he was about to sing that line, but opted last second not to. It could be because of muscle memory. As you might have read from other comments, their performances are dance-heavy, and if they're not dancing they're still jumping and running around the stage. Since there's a lot of choreo and timing is very important for those kind of packed performances, they have to rely on muscle memory for choreos and some singing parts. They wouldn't be able to function with so many things to think about at the same time. Therefore, since this version was different than the one they usually perform, he might have been following his instincts implanted through the hours of training, and remembered just last second that he wasn't supposed to go for it for that version, so he just mouthed it.
They use backing tracks to support the stability and fullness of their voices during performances or add extra layers of armonies. In the case of the last two songs however, I would almost consider those backing vocals more like voice samples that are part of the instrumentation, rather than singing support. Mainly because they could be distinguished very easily and they were purposely not singing in those sections.
I don't know if I made any sense with this 😂

The song is really about his and Suga's (the rapper in the black jacket) experience with their friends from the past. The music video though is directly dedicated to the victims and families of the sewol ferry disaster and the lyrics are quite fitting.

I have watched dozens of clips and Jungcook (JK) often does this when some other members are singing, imitates without intention, because he enjoys performing so much because he has an incredible voice and doesn't need to prove anything when it comes to singing. Jimin who has the beautiful angelic voice was chosen as a member very late just before they debuted in 2013 . He was chosen for his years of Contemporary dance and hip hop dancing, he had no vocal training and virtually trained himself. He asked if he could watch the other vocalists having lessons then went back to their Dormitory and practised for hours in his own time training himself to sing. Also this an on-line concert for the fans. Thankyou for your reaction. They have evolved from 2013 to 2023 in many ways. They struggled during the Pandemic because they had to stop live concerts. 😊

Because the other three vocal line members are tenors, V ends up living in his head voice and mix most of the time. There are some pre-recorded choirs; are parts of the song that Army (their fandom) sings at a concert, they left them as a reflection of nostalgia and because they miss being with Army.
The one in the orange jacket with purple microphone is the main vocalist and his voice is very stable.
The one in the floral shirt with the gold microphone is considered a light tenor or even a countertenor. And he is a lead vocalist.
The one you mentioned was an example of a light falsetto, it's the only baritone in the vocal line; his voice is deep and soulful, but very versatile and with the widest range of the group.

BTS always has the backing track on all their songs because they are a dance heavy group. They are still in great shape, they practice singing on a treadmill so they can control their breathing when they dance while singing. They record the songs with all these adlibs and harmonies for the fullness and work on dance routines for their performances. That’s why they had a lull on the first song “Save Me” where all you heard was backing track because they do heavy choreography at that time. When you get to their mvs or their performance videos, you’ll see why. These men are consummate performers.

This song was written following the Sewol ferry disaster where the ferry boat was sunk killing more than 300 students who were on a day trip. Some of the emotion being shown by the singers is due to the depth of feelings about this disaster. Something I think you might find interesting! The reason they usually only have 1 or 2 singers singing at a time, despite there being 7 of them, is bc their normal performances have a very strong emphasis on dance. So generally, the person singing at any one moment is doing less moving, whilst the other 6 do some very intense dancing. And obviously you need to breathe to do that. It’s why a lot of their songs are structured that way and you wouldn't necessarily notice in a stripped down performance like this one.
I think this performance is a really good example of that if you're interested: th-cam.com/video/wSNd02kVv8o/w-d-xo.html

Thanks for your reaction. The singer with the purple mic, 'JK' is the lead singer of BTS & also lays down the master when recording for the rest to sing their parts to. Yes, there was a backing track, it is obvious and they are not trying to hide it - it is clearly audible & JK was singing along, just as there were horns playing in dynamite and no hon players in the band - not synthesized, etc. I think you would enjoy their hearing the vocalists in the group perform "House of Cards' live version, a song from years ago & 'Film Out' a Japanese track they recorded last year - the Music Blood or CDDT live versions have the best audio. Look forward to more BTS reactions, I enjoy your commentary! :)I love how you appreciate the instrumentation as well, the guitar, bass & drums were going ham, especially in 'Spring Day.'

Their vocals sound so tight and rehearsed because they are normally dancing during these songs. That also accounts for the music breaks in the vocals ;-) The vocals have to be SO solid. Definitely check out the live versions, it’s a sight to behold ;-) It’s also worth looking up their vocals when they are warming up backstage or messing around- their runs are sickeningly clean. Thanks for the video, love the analysis!!

  • @yeoljeongbts5296

Bc the majority of their songs are usually performed with an accompanying dance routine or in large stadiums they almost always have some sort of backing track to get the right sound mix & help fill in where they might need a breath. That particular part in Save ME is a dance break where they are dancing very hard & energetic choreo so they don't sing those "save me, me, me" parts & just let the backing track play.
For future reference on this, BTS don't bother to lip sync, it'll be very obvious if they're just letting the backing track play (you'll see this a bit more clearly in, for instance, Jimin's solo performances of Serendipity as his main focus for certain parts of the song are the choreo over the vocals so he'll just let the backing track take over & doesn't bother trying to "fake" that he's singing bc he isn't for that part though he is singing over the backing track the other 80% of the time).
Not sure if this is something you're aware of, but BTS most definitely employ the backing track & live sound mixing techniques that MJ pioneered & perfected, so if you pay attention during their live stages with choreo you'll notice the hallmarks of those techniques (backing tracks low in the mix but enough there to pad out any rough spots during choreo while allowing the live vocal to cut through & shine, only certain small sections/vocal chops being brought forward in the mix for artistic affect & emphasis, etc).
They write their songs WITH the dancing & performance of that song live on a stage in mind so that they can majority of the time be able to sing it live & achieve that full bodied sound

Thanks for the very educational reaction! I noticed you were talking about lead singers in the group and I wanted to give some insight into that.
So, in kpop (especially older kpop groups), the different artists have assigned positions in the group. The three most common positions are: vocalists, rappers and dancers (there are also other positions like leader, center etc., but let's not get into those for now). These positions are usually sub-categorized to main, lead and sub roles.
You correctly recognized the main and lead vocalists in BTS from this concert!
Jungkook (purple mic, orange suit jacket) is the main vocalist. As a main vocalist he does the vocal guides for their songs and most of the backing vocals on their tracks are done by him, for example. He also gets a lot of lines, but him also having the 'center' position contributes to that.
Jimin (golden mic, the one on the far right) it the lead vocalist. The other guys in BTS 'vocal line' are categorized as sub vocalists, although depending on the song, all of them can take lead roles in my opinion.
In BTS the offical positions (going in order from left to right in the tiny desk concert) are:
J-Hope: Main Dancer, Sub Rapper, Sub Vocalist
    Suga: Lead Rapper
Jungkook: Main Vocalist, Lead Dancer, Sub Rapper, Center, Maknae (youngest)
V: Lead Dancer, Sub Vocalist, Visual
    Jin: Sub Vocalist, Visual
    RM: Leader, Main Rapper
    Jimin: Main Dancer, Lead Vocalist
Also, if you want to hear a bass vocal in kpop, check out Stray Kids! They just had a comeback single called Maniac. Very rare to find bass vocals in any pop music, let alone kpop, but I love to see it and I think you would too! :)
(I also remember you said you liked dubstep in one of your previous reactions, and Stray Kids do dubstep in many of their songs like Freeze that also just got a music video)

For exemplo JK (the guy in orange suit) is the main vocal, because his voice is the more stable so he used to have more lines and he is responsable for recording the vocal guide to help the others, Jimin the guy on the right is lead vocal, so he is normally responsable for sing the parts they want want to highlight. They actually do have "lead singers" - although song by song it's not about who sings the most. Jungkook (purple mic) is the main vocalist, in the center of most ensemble pieces. His voice is generally regarded as the most stable & a lot of songs come back to him again and again for repeated chorus or prechorus sections. He's also incredibly adaptable (there are a zillion videos of him doing lots of stuff with his voice) and blends really well when he's on harmonies.
The other three vocalists all have different colors/tonal qualities and they arrange songs to make use of those qualities while still passing the melody around. And a couple of the rappers sing sometimes as well - especially JHope, which we see here on Spring Day especially.
As main vocal, Jungkook actually lays down the vast majority of the harmonies and ad libs on their backing tracks, so whether or not he was singing in that little moment on Save Me, it's probably him on the backing track. The guys are notoriously terrible at lip sync, which is funny because they're good at everything else.
