  • In this video, I go over my advice for driving a Ford Mustang GT in the winter. This works with all RWD cars as well. Driving a performance car in the winter is no easy task. Using winter tires and following these rules for winter driving, makes these cars a blast in all 4 seasons!

    Gotta remember people in the 50's and 60's when RWD was the norm drove with little issue, all without modern driver aids like traction control. All they had were the best available winter tires for the time and a little bit of driving skill. If my ancestors could do it so can I.
    I drive an old diesel pickup in the winter, very little weight over the rear, tons of weight in the front, high torque, no driver aids, and I only use 4x4 when I am already stuck in DEEEP snow or need to start on a hill that is sheer ice. I drive in RWD 99% of the season. All I need are good studded winter tires and a half functioning brain.

      I agree 100%! To be fair, there weren’t a lot of cars period that were near 500 horsepower in the 50’s and 60’s. And why not use those modern technologies if you have them? I keep traction control off but leave stability control on for winter driving. It definitely takes a little experience, but it is definitely achievable so daily drive these cars in the winter. I appreciate your insight!

    Had a 98 V6 with no TC in high school and honestly was the best teacher for being confident with RWD in the winter. Mistakes were made but it didn't have enough power to get me into too much trouble. Never be afraid to spend extra time getting the snow cleared from the rear wheels in the parking lot. If you have good tires the best thing around turns if you start to slip is to just lift off the throttle and let the fronts grip to straighten the car.

      100%. A lot of these things I didn't mention, but I absolutely put into practice subconsciously.

    The same people who say "You can't drive RWD in the snow" are the same people who hog the passing lane, and think, "I'm a good driver, I've never been in accident!". Get good snow tires on ANY car and it will be way better in the snow. Even if you have AWD, snow tires make it more capable. I've had RWD in the snow for decades, never been an issue with good snow tires. If you have trouble starting off from a stop, start in second. Removes a lot of the torque if you're not good at feathering the gas.

    Here in my area of Canada people think it's dumb to drive a car like this in winter say "you will just spin and crash" meanwhile all delivery van's are RWD and all the transit busses are also. As lon gas you're careful and spend good money on winter tires you will be fine.

    I just traded my 21 STI for a 22 GT Premium with the 10 speed, people around me think Im gonna die in the snow lol. I cant wait to prove them these cars are useable in the winter like any other car with proper equipment, if Ford didnt expect mustangs to be driven in snow/rain they would not have put a dedicated DRIVING MODE into the car for them.

    Thanks for the video. Very great driving. For any of you they don’t know driving an Amazon van or CDL van is type type of driving needed by how Matt’s driving his stang at least in winter. If you can turn off your eagerness to drive fast in the winter with mustang you will probably do just fine. The engine sounds amazing. What kind of mustang do you have and do you think winter tires are essential for a mustang?

    • @WilleyMedia
      @WilleyMedia  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I absolutely think winter tires are required to drive these cars in the winter. You're basically on ice skates with anything else lol. I appreciate the kind words, the car was a 2018 GT with the gen 3 coyote. I have since upgraded to a 2023 GT with the same motor and body style.

    I have a 2019 Bullitt.. I drive it daily in the snow and it is fine. As are almost all RWD cars. The only thing when driving such car is you need to think where you stop.. if you stop
    Uphill it might be hard to move in certain conditions sometimes. Other than that never had a problem with it… and I also have a Lexus is200t and works ok. Ofcourse a front or all wheel drive will handle better but it’s not the end of the world with a rwd.

    I've been daily driving my 17 GT (manual) year round in Michigan since fall of 2020. The S550 is honestly sooo underrated as an all year daily. 99% of them here get put away for winter. The wet/ice mode is pretty outstanding but kills the fun, and yea on the interstate in a snow storm people will stay away from you lol

    • @WilleyMedia

      I think it’d be pretty similar. IRS definitely helps with the 2015+ cars, but dedicated winter tires will make it more than drivable. Love those 2013-2014 cars! Welcome to the family if you end up pulling the trigger.

    Why not get studded tires

    • @meganoobbg3387
      @meganoobbg3387 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Only useful in 100% snow covered roads. In most countries though, snowfall doesn't last long - leaving most major roads melted and pavement exposed. Driving studs on pavement even a little, wears out the studs quickly. Besides snow tires perform good enough on packed snow and slush, which you'll most frequently drive on - studded tires are even more expensive, and you have to change them once roads aren't 100% snowy.

    I have an '03 mustang with regular tires and I gotta say last winter.. I was blown away by how NOT even driveable it was in sleek snow haha. At least on hills. I have good tread on my tires and I couldn't even get it out of where I had it parked on several days.
