  • The hilleberg akto is a classic tent but as I've found out, not a perfect one. I've had it for 6 months now so I feel I can give a more in-depth review of it than if I'd just bought it.

    I had to watch this one again because I'm in the market for a new portable abode for the hills and fancied a high end tent that would serve me many years of service, if well looked after. The Akto fits the bill, even though the negatives are quite small like condensation, which can be managed easily. A Zephyros Compact 1 would work well like you mentioned, for most of your wild camping trips but at the back of you're mind and my mind too, there would be doubt to how well it would perform in the most challenging of conditions, compared to the Akto which has a decent track record. So I nearly pulled the trigger on a Akto or Soulo (couldn't decide) then I looked at the cost of a footprint to go with and seen the Soulo footprint at £79 for a piece of ground tarp which, you could probably get for a fraction of the price from a 3rd party manufacturer or even DIY from old materials lying around. My point is this Graham, Hilleberg nearly lured me in as a customer, their tents are legendary and worthy of a premium because of their high quality and workmanship but IMHO, seems like they want us to pay extra for something more, a status symbol perhaps? as well as a decent well made tent. There was no real reason for a tent footprint to cost £79, other than paying for the Hilleberg logo expertly sewn onto a not so very exceptional and basic ground tarp material. I refuse to pay over the top for something I can get similar and relatively cheap elsewhere, that's just me and I'm not digging anyone who buys into Hilleberg because they are Quality and its a hobby and if it brings joy and happiness then I'm all for it. On a side note, my son Christopher, through the Cadets is doing his Silver Duke of Edinburgh award and wants to volunteer at the cubs. Is this possible?.. Chris seems really keen on the idea and we can attend cubs on Wednesday and discuss this.

    • @grahamswildcamping
      @grahamswildcamping  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hillebergs are some of the toughest tents and best build quality out there but I agree that they are now over priced. A few years ago (not many!) a Soulo could be had for £500. Some shops have them in for £900 which is too much for me. As for a footprint at £79- I wouldnt buy that either, much cheaper and home made options out there. Some people are happy with that though, so fair play to them.
      Good to hear Christopher is doing the DOE, I remember him well, he's a good lad. I'm not the cub leader anymore but go along most weeks to help out. There are some restrictions with volunteering but happy to meet on Wednesday to talk about it.

    Nice little review. The top vent needs to be kept open in every tent (though cheaper makes don’t always have one) to create convection current for damp air to escape. Another low down place to add airflow on a windless day is the back wall - place a water bottle under it to lift the outer fabric.

    • @grahamswildcamping
      @grahamswildcamping  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you, I definately agree about venting your tent as much as possible, condensation is always a potential issue in 4 season (even 3 season tents). Thats a good tip about the water bottle- I'll try it out. Cheers and ATB, Graham

    I use hilleberg tents ever since my first tent , a Wild Country Mistrel was flattened in 80mph winds at cairngorm, the zephyr you mention, I was going to buy it but got the mistrel instead as it tore whilst the salesman was setting it up, not exactly inspiring confidence.
    WIld country said that no tent can survive 80mph winds and washed their hands of it, Hilleberg though replaced a tentpole free of charge when the Akto got ripped out of the ground in 90mph winds, enabling me to do a bit of paragliding till the gust died down whilst hanging onto a guyline, one tough tent.
    Before going to sleep , I would close the side vents. If you sat up in the morning, would get a soaking head, but not an issue aslong as you just give the inner a wipe first.

      Thanks, it’s always interesting to hear about other people’s experiences with tent models. I can’t imagine what 90 mph winds would feel like, it must have been absolutely mad!

    Nice comments,
    Don’t forget the abisko lite 1 is really the same design of tent a bit cheaper and you can vent the ends without getting out,
    Don’t think I camp out enough to justify the expense of some of these top end tents, wasted my money on the MSR Hubba Hubba I think now you have it, it’s probably spot on for our conditions up here as it’s so windy.

    Great review there Graham 👍🏻Pretty much agree with your assessment of the tent. If they incorporated venting at the head and foot of the inner I think it would greatly increase the airflow and help to reduce the condensation . Unfortunately the condensation became too much of an issue for me so got rid 😫 On the plus side got just about what I paid for it 5 years later ⛺️😉ATB Dave.

    • @horstpeter125
      @horstpeter125 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Condensation alsways appears on the outer, waterproof fabric. It' s just about how much moisture you get and how much will be trapped (by the waterproof outer). A mesh inner does nothing for or against condensation. It's just nice in hot conditions. With the flaps open you can really reduce condensation. I've got other tents too and the only thing which really reduces condensation are high sides which allow some airflow.

    • @Chris66able
      @Chris66able ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Fell_Wanderer There's plenty of videos showing Hillebergs are no tougher in extreme weather than tents less than half the price !
      £1000 for a tent that leaves you wet, unless you unzip the door which is supposed to keep out the wind & RAIN !
      The best solution has got to be buy Vango which will keep me dry for a third of the price of Hilleberg, but to impress other campers I 'll just spray the inside of the tent with a hose then dip my sleeping bag in a near by river, in the morning and they'll assume its a Hilleberg.

      This comment is the most honest n hilarious for working class men.
      When I lived in Canada I too needed decent kit, 10 0z duck cotton hot tent hand made by a crazy French Canadian who has it ready as n when he feels like making them. That n the imported Norwegian stove cost about $1500 (£1,000) I couldn’t bring myself to do it, month after month, then one day I drove home via a “liquor store” brought a 6 pack, a bottle of red and started firing off my orders. Had her pitched on a frozen lake in -43 deep in the Canadian prairies. Had to bug out at sundown, truck was going to die n my wood pile was not big enough to see out the night.
