That's true, before Zed was corrupted by the Darkness and hatred. He, Shen, and his Master was tasked to subdue Jhin. To put it shortly, the mission was completed and Jhin was thrown to jail. An organization freed him and gave him more toys to fiddle with. As a revenge to Zed , Jhin shot him when Zed was inside as he was talking to his master. There is no detailed description as to what actually happened inside the temple but that is the gist of it.
hey the theory of Martin Ramos is interresting, what if Jhin was the reason Zed cried out in pain and what if Jhin did kill the master ?? Makes sense also Jhin = best character

I have a theory on zed's lore What if the human zed went In with the master, master realised zed was a threat so he stabbed him (hence zed's scream in pain) and when zed's human side died his inner shadow ninja (the black magic thing that went inside him) materialised into the zed we know now and beheaded the master for his actions seems plausible
zed's lore actually reminds me of Gouki/Akuma lore of SF. zed finds a forbidden technique which is the shadow jutsu, while akuma the dark hadou scroll. both of them won against their rival brother. shen for zed, and goken for gouki. both were exiled for disobeying their masters (because master says; never touch the forbidden etc, etc...) years later. they returned with their techniques mastered and proceeds to murder their former master while their brothers watches the horror. zed claims the title master of his family dojo and gouki entitles himself master of the fist.
Gotta give Riot this... EVERYTHING about Zed, from his Looks, to dialog, to laugh, to even his freaking lore!: just screams "I'M THE BIGGEST D - BAG ON EARTH!!!" :P

oh come on, that's not even half of the lore, in a nutshell before he sead that shen was the only one who couldn't defeat: the master, shen and zed were also doing missions, one day they had to do a super hard mission that took then months to complete, they needed to find a murderer that left dead bodies with twisted humiliation, while trying to find the murderer the master lost his red hear and it became white, shen lost his humor and zed wasn't able to keep up with his studying anymore, they finally found that murderer witch he was jhin. That is why zed wasn't able to beat shen and wanted to open that "box of the shadows "
If Shen had map awareness at that moment he could have saved his master.
