    Callas and Pippo - both only with the remains of their voice ... and yet: What I hear here touches me more than singers of today's generation are able to do ...

      Maybe because they were great artists, with a musicality and understanding of the words and emotions as no others have.

    Young singers in their prime would give their backteeth to sing as well as Callas and Di Stefano in this recording. She sounds like a young girl. Goodness I wish people will stop harping about the " terrible decline" of her voice. The same goes for Di Stefano. They are absolutely phenomenal.

    This is remarkable! Both of them got a really bad rap from the critics when they did this recital tour. Maybe not in their prime, but still outstanding. If it had been anyone else, they probably would have gotten rave reviews! Thank you so much for posting!

    Actually, this is wonderful. Yes, of course, neither are in their vocal prime, but what wonderful singing, just the same. Had the GIFT of hearing them in Miami Beach 1974 perform this......the audience went wild. So wish she had toured with an orchestra instead of just piano.

    • @tarejso5632
      @tarejso5632 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They only did the tour because of the ill daughter of Guiseppe and they wanted to make money and by using piano instead of Orquestra they saved money. Maria cared for Pipo and wanted to help and the public was hungry for Callas's return so she agreed. She lost her love Onasis but she hoped to regain her carrer. People would sell their souls to see her live so regardless of piano and both past their prime you should be grateful every day of your life that you experienced them live.

      @@tarejso5632 many hideous things have been written about this tour, and I'm one of the few living witnesses. My sister was well taken care from the best Oncologists in Milano at the Cancer Institute, we didn't need Maria's money. It's such a horrible thing to say. Maria needed my father way more than he needed her. I have hours of recording of the 2 practicing for the Tour and you can hear how her voice progresses. I also have her love letters to my father, Onassis was history.

      @@FLORIA2012 I am sorry but it was an ongoing story about the need for money. I did not mean any harm. Well great, we finally can put that theory to rest. I term of singing( I am a young baritone 2 years in studying and can only say so much) Your father was in better shape than Callas for sure. Sadly in terms of improvements, there are only a few good recordings of this tour and I can only say so much I am not a voice expert( at least I do not feel like I know enough) - In my mind, Callas got the basis of the voice back my the end. The last few recording in Japan proves that. To me, your father(no doubt one of the best tenors in history. Personly my favorite alongside Corelli, Domingo) sounded fine. None of them were very young also anymore and had long careers behind. Maybe you could use these letters and memories and recordings in a book or something. There is only so much we know about that time. I know that I would like to know more but I also respect If you want to keep this private. Thank you for telling the truth. For someone who lives for Opera like me( I am only 20), I am very happy to see that you tressure your father legacy as you do. He deserves nothing but admiration and respect. I hope I did not insult you. Lots of love from Ljubljana, sLOVEnia.

    This is the first of the unreleased 1972 recordings I've ever heard and given Callas' circumstances at the time, this is impressive singing from her. Robert Sutherland, their pianist for the 73-74 tour, says in his memoir that di Stefano gave Callas terrible vocal advice during that period but this is obviously before he managed to do so.

    • @FLORIA2012
      @FLORIA2012 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Sutherland was a young substitute pianist as Ivor Newton was ill, hardly able to judge two great artists in their maturity and wrote gross gossip memories. This tour was the best that happened in his career.

      @@FLORIA2012 , tuo padre e' stato un cantante "eccelso", non ha avuto eguali nella storia. La piu' bella voce di sempre. Maria era ed e' quella che sappiamo, eccelsa anche lei. Sono personaggi e cantanti indiscutibili. Se hanno fatto qualche passo falso lo hanno fatto in maniera pari a loro. Alcune persone dovrebbero stare zitte. Cordiali saluti.

    This is actually quite fine. Of course there is a huge gulf between what works in the studio and what works live, but we have to take a studio recording for what it is. Yes - there is a breathy sound to Callas's voice, but it was there even in the La Scala studio recording of 1955. Yes - the upper register is thin. But there's more than enough command of the voice to demarcate the music and provide all the expressiveness that we expect from Callas. The handling of florid writing is classic Callas. Yes - the orchestra is thin, this is bel canto, but it's a remarkably successful listen. Maybe the remastering helped! Di Stefano is clearly in better voice, but as usual sounds boorish in bel canto.

    A parte qualche battuta che Di stefano riesce a cantare con una "certa" eleganza, il resto è tutto strillato come se Nemorino non fosse un contadinotto semplice ed innamorato, ma un venditore di Ostriche che commercializza la sua merce a voce alta. La Callas si sforza di alleggerire, per avvicinarsi al personaggio. Ma la voce perde di rotondità e bellezza, e per alcuni versi diventa anche fastidiosa. Diciamolo chiaro, nel 1972 erano entrambi agli sgoccioli di una gloriosa carriera e queste registrazioni venivano fatte solo per motivi commerciali. Ma hanno lasciato dei due il ricordo non eccessivamente esaltante.

    I wish Callas had sung and recorded more comic roles in the '50s. She would've been an astonishing Adina (as we can have a glimpse here) or Norina.

    Di Stefano ha cantato non solo alla Scala, ma in diversi teatri il ruolo di Nemorino e lo ha sempre riscoperto, reinventato con la sua magia qui lo interpreta nel 1972 in studio con la sua partner storica Maria Callas ed insieme ci portano dentro la storia che sa di favola.

    Di Stefano sounds Ok though monochromatic, Callas is, alas, unlistenable. There is basically no colour left to her voice, just a raspy paper sound.

      And yet she actually sounds better here (relatively speaking, of course) than in the Verdi duets from this 'album.' So bel canto was, to the end, medicine for her voice.

      @Eric Cheng you made me re-listen to them and I agree. This music was kinder to her vocal state, she could use parlando without forcing to compete with an orchestra and the florid passages give some focus.
