    That these two artists who both gave so much more of themselves than most at the highest artistic level, were able to produce this flawless duet, despite waning vocal resources, is a heavenly gift. Only GREAT spirits could have produced such a treasurable memory!

    It is a surprise that they got this much on a studio. Not the best singers for Otello, there is a true effort to do their best. The impact of hearing Di Stefano and Callas again is still there. Better than an hologram , this is the true artists with the. Vocal resources available to them , diminished but it’s all there. Now It is for us to hunt how many other takes were made by Philippe. Thanks for the upload.

    . L' enunciazione di Di Stefano è straordinariamente esemplare per chiarezza, e si ascolta il grande volume della sua voce, sebbene il timbro dolce sia ancora di natura lirica. Straordinaria la Callas che insieme a Di Stefano acquista luce e magia......pensare tutto questo negli anni 70 è semplicemente magnifico e sorprendente!!!!!!

      Non si offende se le dico che preferisco in questa opera la coppia TEBALDI/DEL MONACO'??? Pippo rimane la più bella voce , a mio modesto parere, del dopo guerra ma qui dobbiamo inchinarci a Mario

    The voices aren't what they were 20 years prior, Di Stefano isn't what he was ten years prior...Callas actually improved from herself 10 years prior to this - her high notes are wobble-free, a bit hoarse in the middle range but I wish that Japanese company had let her do that one final Tosca in '75 instead of replacing her with Caballe at the last minute...

      I read the book Maria Callas The Woman Behind The Legend. From reading the book it is my understanding that Callas made the decision to pull out of the Tosca production. She was telling people. I have to be much better or nothing at all. Then she said, "I've come to a decision. I'm stopping singing. I'm fed up with the whole business.' Di Stefano pursuaded Monserrat Caballe to take over as Tosca.

Unless she drastically improved after the close of the farewell recitals, I would be surprised if she could even get through half of the first duet in 1975. It was really tragic. Interestingly, however, I do think she improved quite a bit in 1976 and 1977, judging by the bootleg of Ah perfido and the excerpt from Forza. Probably not enough yet to sing through Tosca, but noticeably.

    I feel like a di Stefano and Callas past their prime are still loads better than modern opera singers. Callas had numerous health problems, possibly a degenerative neuromuscular disease that may have affected her larynx, so I see no need to be critical about her later performances. This is really good for her later years. And... Maybe di Stefano would have sounded better if the mic was farther away?? Lol

    Say what you like about their voices being past their best, but this is still extraordinary by any standards other than those they themselves set in their heyday. As for the music, it never ceases to amaze me that this came from a composer born early in the 19th century, and still writing oohm-pa-pa arias not long before - although Macbeth defies any disparagement of the form, deployed so skilfully by the great Verdi.

    in questo brano siamo abituati ad ascoltare voci di tenore piu' scure e specie nel medium.
    che rappresenterebbero piu' a modo il personaggio di otello. ciononostante ,ed e' fuor di dubbio, che la capacita' di Di Stefano e per gli accenti e per la chiara pronuncia sia da ammirare ed invidiare .

    Bravi, ma lontani anni luce da Del Monaco e Tebaldi. Comunque la Callas mi ha sorpreso in positivo, pensavo peggio. Di Stefano lo trovo bravo, ma un po' sguaiato è sopra le righe. In qualche passo pare che urli. Forse, l'impeto ? Mah!
    Tengo a precisare che si sta parlando di grandissimi interpreti e le critiche sono commisurati a quei tempi e a quegli artisti Ad avercene oggi interpreti di tal fatta!

      Di Stefano is well past his best here so is callas,di stefano was a lyric tenor his voice is not right for this role,that said a younger pipi had one of the Most beautiful tenor voices,try listen to del monaco and de Los Angeles or Ramon vinay or go back to Margaret Burke Sheridan singing this duet I think with zenatello it’s here on u tube

    Chissà cosa ha fatto al Sig. Garzi la Tebaldi? Trovare qui in Otello un'affermazione su quanto la Callas sarebbe stata meglio della Tebaldi fa sorridere. Chissà, magari non gli è stata offerta una cena. E magari gliela ha offerta ai bei tempi la Callas, passata alla storia per la sua generosità e per la propensione a socializzare.

    Di Stefano come sempre timbro bellissimo, fraseggio ineguagliabile, dizione perfetta, grande teatralità, grande passione, ma acuti inesistenti, non a fuoco, tirati, pieni d'aria, molto urlati.
    Peccato non abbia mai messo a posto la tecnica... Peccato davvero.
    Quando non ci sono acuti è per distacco il numero uno di tutti i tempi, poi arrivano gli acuti e il castello di carte crolla..

If you want to criticize them in "performance," go to videos of their 1973 tour.     La piu bella voce di tenore che purtroppo se le volta rovinare in primis per il cattivo studio di tecnica vocale ed anche se averse cantato lirico leggero o il lirico non sarebbe cambiato nulla poi addirittura ha affrontato un repertorio da lirco spinto caro DI Stefano la frittata e fatta vittorio il liricomane

    Premessa la loro ineguagliabile grandezza e al di là del timbro vocale stupendo, ma non adatto, non si può cantare Otello come fosse Rodolfo, vocali spesso troppo aperte e fraseggio troppo romantico.
    La Callas, non molto in forma, nel timbro e in molti accenti sembra più Lady Macbeth che l'innocente Desdemona.

      Con dolore e amarezza devo dire che lei ha ragione. Certe volte bisogna vere il coraggio di "TACERE". Nessun di loro, anche nei tempi migliori, sarebbe stato un buon Otello o una passabile Desdemona. La invito però a riascoltare la "canzone del salice" con la Callas che, con voce grigia e quasi afona fa PIANGERE l" ANIMA.

    Se Maria avesse aggiunto al suo repertorio Desdemona non avremmo i peana in questo ruolo per la Tebaldi. La delicatezza, la dolcezza di Maria, non ostante tutto, era estranea alla Tebaldi che pareva spesso un corazziere piu' che una fragile creatura molto piu' simile a Violetta che a Brunhilde.

      C'è qualcosa di vero in ciò che dice maria Garzi, la Callas canta tutto in due modi: o come una strega nevrotica, Così fa Medea, che è il suo miglior ruolo, perché era così, e poi è una strega dei cartoni animati nei suoi video Tosca, oppure è sempre vulnerabile, piangente, la Callas canta tutto uguale, canta Puccini come Bellini, tutto in lacrime. In questa registrazione di 1972 con Di Stefano stiamo ascoltando una Desdemona come se fosse Amina di Sonnambula, ma con una voce già rauca di una strega già anemica

      Renata Tebaldi è la Desdèmona ideale, e una gran cantante e questa parte era una di quelli che cantava meglio, è stata un esempio de i cantante per il ruolo di Desdèmona. Maria Callas superba cantante non aveva la qualita di voce per il personaggio, peró , questo brano lo fa con la sua grande inteligenza e interpretazione. Non dobbiamo paragonare ambi due artisti in un ruollo solo, tutte due sono state MOLTO GRANDI, e magari oggi ascoltare una Tebaldi o una Callas. Per carità, scriva come musico y non come fan. Grazie

    Callas worked well as Desdemona....she had the delicacy that the character required.
    Di Stefano, with an unmatched lyrical tenor voice, should never have sung Otello......poor casting.
    He sounded forced and tired...a role for a true dramatic tenor: listen to Del Monaco, Domingo and Martinelli ...and yes, even Gigli( believe it or not in 1951)

    Both wrong for these roles, both in terrible shape. Di Stefano just shouts, Callas is in miserable raspy voice. This just shows their technique was very flawed from the beginning and they sang mostly on nature's gifts.

      @@alexingresss2420 if you knew me better, you'd know I praise Callas in the right roles for her. My opinions coincide with M. Scott who isn't a deaf Callas fan but someone who hears the flaws and the greatness. Same with Tebaldi.

And next time read careful before replying. My comment wasn't about your critique of this recording. My comment was about your mouthful of a statement that Callas' technique was very flawed from the beginning. Di Stefano's wasn't flawed for the simple reason he had not much technique to begin with. Let me repeat myself: What are YOUR singing technique credentials, armchair specialist?

      Nature doesn't give you an impeccable breath technique that make you able to sing Norma, Medea, and Armida etc. but nature can give you a beautiful voice with decent range barely hitting high C and mostly flat that countless mediocre singers make a career with.

    Let’s not compare callas right before she died in her declining voice to young tebaldi , compare young callas to young tebaldi and than let’s see who’s better … comparing singers is never good thing everyone has different thing to offer but nothing brings opera drama out like Callas
