I just picked up a mining card p104 with 8GB ram and paired it with hd5450 with mod driver 550.xx ver installed. Not bad for a GPU worth 26$ with 1070 performance. Plus it gets impressive performance with 20+ t/s with llama 3 8b 6q models, which is beyond my expectation. The two downsides I could see are the choppy video performance even when playing yt videos with hd5450 since the p104 does not have video output but has to rely on the ancient hd5450 and no video encoder and decoder means you cannot compress videos with it.

With graphics I feel anything better than a mid-late 2010s title like AC Origns/Witcher 3 doesn't really add much to the overall experience; the level of fidelity the 980ti can provide (older games at max or new games on med) is plenty. Added to that I find I'm only drawn to new games based off the gameplay rather than those with the highest GPU requirements / amazing graphics. So long as I can run it, which I can with a 980ti, I'm content!😀

Ahh, the 900 series. I remember seeing it launch back in Sept 2014. This and the RTX 2000 series are the only ones I skipped. Well sorta. My EVGA GTX 590 died after Pascal launched, and EVGA replaced my GTX 590 with a GTX 970.
I started shopping for a new card back in early 2016 but I decided to wait for Pascal. The price/performance ratio of the GTX 980 put it in an awkward position against the 980ti and 970.

Hellblade 2 awful results on 980 is mainly due to Nanite, nanite if anything is basically Ue5 mesh shaders and it's software fallback is horrible, i still don't understand what even is the point of Ue5 software support for Lumen and Nanite since most cards that would be able to run it at stable Framerate already have hardware support for it

while I get your points about the card being a bit old, I recently just picked one up (replacing an aging 660!!!) and it is doing wonders! I am not the biggest gamer even though I play some titles (and just as you said, a handful of the recent AAA games just don't appeal to me), however for my purposes it does well, better than the 660 did.

I'm looking forward to the anniversary build, first of all :)
I kept a Mac Pro 2010 running long past it's prime - and the secret sauce was the 980ti and either Windows or Linux.
That said, I play a different style of games than most - strategy, hardcore cRPGs, retro-games, oddball indie stuff...
As I am a tinkerer, I have a number of systems laying around - mostly cobbled eWaste or deals I couldn't pass up thrown into whatever jank case I have laying about...
The Titan Black, and - guilt by association - the original Titan - are beasts of GPUs for CPU heavy titles (which cRPGs are). However, the whole API and driver numbers are a sad, sad state of affairs for these games.
The Black actually can push some frames in Baldur's Gate III - but I don't have a map, at all, those layering effects just don't render. The 980 could do it, well in fact, but I sold that card... and I tend to game on my secondary system (I leave the other for my family, I like CRT gaming - so I have a dedicated system).
My point, I guess, is that obsolescence happens in weird ways. I don't AAA game, at least not much, and my main gaming rig is capped at 75hz (the real computer can hit 165hz, but I hate that screen for gaming, don't know why).
I have found that the RX5500 is sort of a sweet spot for me - with my disappointing sleeper build (Pentium G7400, 64GB DDR5 @ 4200, RX 5500 8GB). But I digress, but I have been nothing but impressed, at least in my sort of gaming, by the performance here (other than BG3, though... honestly...).
Thanks for championing this legend of a card, even if the TI has somehow aged much better (I was impressed, and it wasn't that long ago).

I finished alan wake 2 on gtx1080 with vulkan mod but yeah, performance was barely acceptable - mostly 30-40fps with everything on low except medium textures and fsr on quality . But there were some locations with 10-15fps fortunately there were the ones without enemies so i could finish the game . The game itself is masterpiece ;)

  • @HunterTracks
    @HunterTracks 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

The thing with Hellblade II is that it *really* doesn't like it when you go over the VRAM limit, since makes system RAM calls really aggressively. It can easily go from running at 60 FPS to 10 FPS between scenes, depending on what textures are loaded in. So the 720p FSR UP comparison is actually pretty generous for the card, it would run at like 2 FPS at 1080p.

To be fair, PC gaming is so much more than the latest AAA games. So I wouldn't be particularly concerned as a GTX980 owner. Looking at the latest games I have been playing on Steam I'm starting to question why I even have a modern GPU 😅: Skies of Arcadia (Dreamcast emulation), Monsterboy and the Cursed Kingdom, Streets of Rage 4, Ultimate Chicken Horse, Stardew Valley, Doom Eternal, Huntdown, Prey (2006). All of which would have run great on a GTX980. The one single game that makes me happy to have an RX6800 is Half Life Alyx (and VR in general). It's just insane to play that game and all of its great mods at 5400x2700 in VR.

I've got the 980m 4gb. I know it isn't the same chip as the 980 but it was at the time the highest they had a laptop. The 980m with a mid range laptop CPU like a i7-4720HQ Processor isn't really good enough to play most modern titles. It started to have a hard time in 2020. Even games released in 2018 that have gotten large updates over time like Squad are now unplayable at 1080p. I now use it as a LAN and RTS machine. I tried using it to stream games from my better PC, it failed at that miserably. Games have just surpassed what a machine with this kind of hardware can do.

I had a 980 Ti til last year and it was great for my 1080p 60hz monitor. I only upgraded because I got a 165hz display. Granted I didn’t play the newest games because I always wait for sales but even games from 2021 or so were fine. The regular 980 is a lot slower though.

would be nice to see bar graphs, ie it being compared to other gpus u tested. But anyway, maxwell was a beast, think it is still a tiny bit faster than polaris 10? I remember when polaris 10 ie rx 480 was launched, it was so hard to get it for cheap, as it was at 300€ here in sweden for a long time. And the older hawaii based amd gpus like 290/x, 390/x and maxwell cards like 970/980 were at max 220€ so it was stupid to get the rx 480.
