      Yeah, I bet the "A hole" designers hug themselves to sleep every night for lowering the manufacturing costs by $2, and the total parts count by 1x lower access hatch, 1x screw, and 6 bleeding square inches of RF shield tape !
      I worked in IT hardware repairs for multiple national companies for over 20 years, and this one cost cutting measure of not adding an access hatch for the memory would have been enough for me to recommend sourcing an alternative brand of laptop. If a new piece of software dictates that 2 or 3 hundred laptops all need to have their memory upgraded, there's a significant department cost difference between the ONE minute it would take to pop off a cover, take out the old mem stick, slot in the new one, test it's recognised by the laptop, and move to the next desk, Vs the 2 hour minimum it would take per unit to go FETCH the laptop from the user, bring it to your static free work bench, strip the motherboard out of it, swap the memory, reassemble it, test EVERYTHING that you had to disconnect during the upgrade, then return it to the user !
      This simple lack of an access hatch would mean the difference between having 10 IT guys easily blitzing the whole lot in 2 days, opposed to it taking ALL the IT guys the company has (And often, as many extra outside contractors as your budget will allow) dedicating over a week to the repetitive chaos of stripping and rebuilding laptops. It turns a simple task (that could even be palmed off onto interns) into an expensive extended logistical nightmare.
      The only reason I came to look at this video was because a friend just dropped off their kids 255 G3 and asked if I could work out why it randomly crashes. I was going to swap out the ram to see if that changes anything AS IT'S USUALLY THE SIMPLEST STARTING POINT, but now I don't think I'm going to bother unless I've ruled out pretty much everything else. It COULD be faulty memory, but swapping that's now right down the list, and it's even BELOW him loosing all his date because of a fresh windows install !

    This is one of the worst and most involved process to upgrade the RAM. I don't recommend trying it unless you are very mechanically inclined and have experience with the ribbon cable connectors they use today. I had the most trouble with the keyboard connector, because the little black plastic piece came off completely and it was difficult to put back on. If this happens to you, be aware that the side of that black strip with little holes in it actually slides over the top metal fingers in a vertical orientation, and then once the cable is inserted, you push it down into a horizontal orientation, and it clicks into place. The video does NOT show exactly how these connectors are released. In most cases, the black strip is to be rotated up before the cable is pulled out. Got it done after additional time monkeying with that connector and now it is working fine.

      @encinobalboa 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The ribbon connector black piece flips up. It's actually easier than the slide type ribbon connector.

    • @Reman1975
      @Reman1975 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@encinobalboa Yeah, and these ZIF ribbon sockets are way better than the god awful push in friction fit connectors that were used before them. On those it was a race between thermal creep pushing the ribbon out and oxidisation causing the pins to lose connection with the ribbons contacts !

    Very helpful thanks. Job done now. Would not otherwise have attempted this as the G£ laptop needs to be almost comletely dismantled to change the RAM - 0/10 for design.

  • @encinobalboa
    @encinobalboa 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    My HP 255 has one RAM slot so 8GB is all it can take. Upgrading was a royal pain. Toshiba and Dell have an access door and usually have two slots to 16GB is doable. W10 needs 16GB to run without paging.

      If you have large and fast enough SSD at least around 500GB, you could survive even with 4GB or RAM. For "office mode" work. What do you think?

    • @encinobalboa
      @encinobalboa 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@marcoolinho SSD lifespan is determined by read write cycles. If your laptop is caching or paging memory to the SSD because of low RAM, SSD lifespan is being shortened.
