I love the little stir in the audience after that perfectly-executed Aflat. Just like the one after her high G in the Salieri opera. This woman just continues to surprise, nothing but absolute love for her!
For sure Damrau's voice is fuller and more powerful than the average voices singing Fruhlingstimmen... but I think that it can absolutely be a plus, if the big voice is so well controlled! If you are in the live audience and not on TH-cam, more voice (with great technique like Diana of course) means more colours, fuller high notes, wider dynamic range... she can do things that are not allowed to Dessay (who I adore in this aria) and even less to little girlish voices like Battle. This is the same reason why I'll always prefer Callas' version of Lucia di Lammermooor, with her powerful, deep colour (and her virtuosity in controlling such a big voice) over the ones from 99.9% of normal coloratura sopranos.
Love Diana's voice but I think this song is better performed by coloraturas with a much lighter quality like Sumi Jo & Kathleen Battle... I guess we can add Natalie Dessay in that group... Diana Damrau, no matter how great her voice is, I think it's just too strong & powerful for this type of song... Great voice, wrong song... :-)
I just heard the Ingeborg Hallstein recording because you said you preferred it. Completely stunning. Everyone reading this post should go see it! I love Diana Damrau in just about anything, but it's good to see what other interpretations are out there!
People, high notes are such a small part of a singer's scope of art. Give me an excellent middle voice any day over a mediocre voice with an A6. If you are a fantastic soprano and have an A6, great, it's absolutely not necessary, but it IS icing on the cake. If you are an awful soprano with an A6, that's just one more octave I have to sit through. Look up Kate Royal. I highly doubt she has an A6, but what an artist!
Yes, she can still sing this high (her register extends way above that high Ab), and she would probably sing Europa if she was asked to. It's only that her voice is growing richer in the middle and lower register, so she's working on that now :)
i love her voice and i love her as a person!! i'm so glad that her middle and especially low register has become richer - it makes a hell of a difference (for me, anyway)
@LorraineCash Flying halfway across the country to NY next month just to see her in Lucia. No words for how excited I am about it. :) Of course, with my luck she'll be ill that day.
Absolutely, their borth greatness are easily equiparable, one in opera and the one in movies. I think this is why they are both my both favorite opera and acting actttresses!! jaja
i cant seem to find anyone with as much fluidity and consistency in voice on this song as damrau. ive been looking all over youtube n havent found one like her.
@veto83 OMG! Thanks for sharing her! Her voice is so super high! I prefer the color of Diana's voice more, but I do believe Katarzyna has the highest voice I've ever heard!!
can she actually sing this high any more? she has now stopped singing queen of the night, for example. this was in the same year as l'europa riconosciuta. but she still sings lucia, zerbinetta and other high vocally demanding roles.
@killerbunny123123 You can give Meryl Streep 50 Oscars she's -never in her life- singing better than Daniela Damrau, even if Daniela had just woken up after a three-consecutive-night coctail bender at a rock concert [I don't know if they even have those at rock concerts].
I too recently saw both Diana and Joyce DiDonato in Le Conte Ory courtesy of the Met's live transmissions here in France. They were both wonderful as also was Juan Diego Florez as the count. Quite unforgettable ! I was particularly impressed by Joyce's acting - a totally convincing young man ! I loved her to bits !! For fans of Diana, have you checked out her Queen of the Night here - Fantastic !!
Diana can sing better than any of you mf’s commenting, so quit acting as if you or someone else could do it better. She sings a hell of a lot better than my howling, so I’m sure the same applies to y’all
the Aflat variant she used was inspired by the Natalie Dessay variant performed in fledermaus 1993. Though i prefer Hallstein as the best reading of this, high coloraturas are always most fun in this waltz song as Strauss himself composed this for the high light voice. Damrau did well here too.
@veto83 Ok, I listened to Katarzyna some more... she really is quite unbelievable. I am speechless. Haven't heard anyone for a while who just made me want to stop singing altogether because the were at THAT level. (I'm a mezzo and have always envied sopranos ^_^) Katarzyna is incomparable. I don't think there's anyone else living that can sing that high. That being said, I still love Diana Damrau to no end. I love her interpretation of this song, and pretty much every song I've heard her do.
I just had the pleasure of seeing Diana Damrau in "Le Comte Ory" via the HD Met broadcast. She is unbelievable. And she & Joyce DiDonato are absolutely perfect together. I appreciate what some people have posted about how some singers appeal more to some people than others. I have read negative opinions about Joyce DiDonato online which boggles my mind - I have seen Joyce 5 times in concert now & there is, in my opinion, no one better. But not everyone is as crazy about her as I am.
Oh yes I can! Just listen to Ingeborg Hallstein (you can understand every word)! Compared to Hallstein Diana Dmarau sings this Strauss Waltz a little weird! 🤔
Oh yeah, her middle and lower register have become so much richer and more solid. So much more strength and colour coming from it. I hope her top notes will stay as long as possible and maybe she can colour them more and more too! Like for a Violetta that would be just awesome. She said she already had some contracts for it. Did she ever perform some aria's from it?
Ah, well put! That's a great way to look at things! But I must say, this is amazing because it's not every day that someone sings an A6! I mean, it's incredible. And I believe that Diana Damrau has a rather nice voice; unfortunately this recording is of poor quality and cannot easily display that. But I agree with your wisdom. :)
singinlikeafool, Hallstein is lovely. If you like her version, check out Lucia Popp's, because I think it flows with incredibly swing and musicality, and Popp has a voice that combines crystal clarity (some people say silvery) with a creamy warmth that is unique. The Popp version was gone from youtube for a while, but now it is back! Don't get me wrong-- I adore Damrau, especially on stage. But this is one of her weakest offerings for some reason.
Jordan Schreiner You are totally WRONG... So, I can discover that you are not a Musician, because you couldnt be able to hear all the mistakes she had singing this, if we compare every note and all the acrobatic stuff and breath support and agility, Damrau was kicked out by Dessay.
This was meant for a coloratura soprano with a lighter voice. Damrau is a dramatic coloratura and her voice is very big. She does do a good job here, but I do prefer Dessay's version of this simply because Dessay is a lyric coloratura and her voice is what this was written for.
However Dessay is not a comparison. Just listen to Ingeborg Hallstein! In my ears Hallstein sings this much better and more natural! (I'm no Diana Damrau fan at all!)
Damrau is a star, without doubt. Great instrument. However, this is awful, a screeching tirade lacking in delicacy. Definitely not a voice of spring; more like winter.
@Mark Jackson she is a stratospheric dramatic coloratura soprano. That is rare.
I love the little stir in the audience after that perfectly-executed Aflat. Just like the one after her high G in the Salieri opera. This woman just continues to surprise, nothing but absolute love for her!
That A-flat is just not fair.... it's so perfect!!!! It sounds like a flute! Love you Diana!!!
For sure Damrau's voice is fuller and more powerful than the average voices singing Fruhlingstimmen... but I think that it can absolutely be a plus, if the big voice is so well controlled! I KNEW there was a recording somewhere! Thank you so much for posting! :)
One cannot judge on this recording the acoustics are too poor.
Beautifully sung!
Pity that the recording quality was not better.
WTF?! Amazing. Unreal A flat.
OH WOW!!! WONDERFUL A-Flat!
5:51.... I'm speechless. She's phenomenal. :)
I KNOOOOOOWWWW, SO EARGASMIC
Yeah, because she was inspired by Natalie Dessay
I just heard the Ingeborg Hallstein recording because you said you preferred it. Completely stunning. Everyone reading this post should go see it! I love Diana Damrau in just about anything, but it's good to see what other interpretations are out there!
Hi there! I want to point out that the 'high' note she sang was an 'Ab6' (A-flat-six). Good point though!
Ein wenig langsam und ich ziehe Ingeborg Hallstein deutlichst Diana Damrau vor!
People, high notes are such a small part of a singer's scope of art. Give me an excellent middle voice any day over a mediocre voice with an A6. Diana Damrau is currently the greatest coloratura in the world! Her tone of voice, her vocal beauty of this diamond, wonder. I'm a fan!
i love her voice and i love her as a person!! i'm so glad that her middle and especially low register has become richer - it makes a hell of a difference (for me, anyway)
I Always hope they recorded a version from her in that time. Perfect version!
I clearly prefer Ingeborg Hallstein!
So great to finally hear this!!!!! Could the orchestra be any more ooom-pa-pa?!?! :)
@LorraineCash Flying halfway across the country to NY next month just to see her in Lucia. No words for how excited I am about it. :)
Of course, with my luck she'll be ill that day.

that A flat actually made me tear up...
i can't even describe how her hitting it makes me feel...it's like she truly is the best.
In my personal opinion, she sings this better then even Natalie d essay.
5:41, wow....
Great video! I love her!
I love you Ms.Damrau....Anything you sing makes my life pleasant...
5:40
That G is so perfect
@blackeneddove katarzyna dondalska polnische singerin sopran
can she actually sing this high any more? she has now stopped singing queen of the night, for example.
this was in the same year as l'europa riconosciuta.
but she still sings lucia, zerbinetta and other high vocally demanding roles.
That Ab.... Diana you are amazing!!
I see a certain similarity between Diana and Laura Linney. But yes, she looks like M. Streep, too. Very beautiful women.
@LorraineCash Agreed, it's wonderful. I'm an enormous Natalie Dessay fan and her version is tied for my favorite with Ms. Battle.
@killerbunny123123 You can give Meryl Streep 50 Oscars she's -never in her life- singing better than Daniela Damrau, even if Daniela had just woken up after a three-consecutive-night coctail bender at a rock concert [I don't know if they even have those at rock concerts].

Maravillosa!!!!Una Gran Soprano!!!, BRAVA!❤🌟😊
@LorraineCash Kathleen Battle's version is also lovely
@wowthungsten hahaha! Agreed! But i was just speaking about how Diana's face looks to Meryl's :P
Am i the only one who sees a certain similarity between Diana and Meryl streep?
to przepiekne divy sopranu koloraturowego iNatalie Dessay cuda 21wieku naszej opery
Her voice at times borders at times as too much for the light playfulness of Strauss. It's just so big.
Elle aime bien crier, même si elle pousser trop sa voix, c'est quand même une petite voix qui est presque couverte par l'orchestra
Are you deaf? Best coloratura of our times!
@killerbunny123123 Your right, I see it like you!
6:38..... This Short time has all word of my wanna saying
ale najlepsza jest i będzie Maria Callas
hahahaha i've just think about that similarity xD !!
I want singing and learn this song
wunderbar - , A Katarzyna Dondalska-horen Sie bitte..
Elle chante dedans, le timbre est très agressif
Brava!!!
I stopped breathing
5:51, I mean...

I agree. Lucia Popp's timbre was just God-given. But do you know if her German was good?
I love her voice!!!!

Dessay is a sheer goddess in this role, absolutely supreme
Oh get a life as a musician myself just be happy that these people share their gifts with the ungrateful public
Anna Moffo is my favorite opera singer.
This was meant for a coloratura soprano with a lighter voice. Damrau is a dramatic coloratura and her voice is very big. She does do a good job here, but I do prefer Dessay's version of this simply because Dessay is a lyric coloratura and her voice is what this was written for.
actually damrau stated that her voice is a full lyric soprano with high extension.
Outstanding. She blows Dessay out of the water. She sings with so much energy her top just rings like no other. I'm in love every time she sings.
