How Do I Get Over The Fear Of Leaning My Motorcycle? Does The Weight Matter? No!!

  • Hello TH-camrs! A special hello to my fellow PRELOADERS! For those of you that aren't PRELOADERS yet, hit that subscribe button and become one. In this video I discuss leaning the motorcycle and steps to take to get over the fear of doing so. Trust and believe (Exercise #3) as well as a good command of the friction zone are the keys to successful turns with sufficient lean at low speeds.
You may be asking yourself, who are PRELOADERS?
    PRELOADERS:
Subscribers to this channel who are dedicated to being proficient in slow speed motorcycle operation.
    What does PRELOAD mean?
    PRELOAD:
Engaging the throttle to raise the RPM’s (revolutions per minute) above idle and holding the throttle there, with the clutch pulled in (no power to the rear wheel, “in reserve” “PRELOADED”). This process will make power to the rear wheel available to the rider immediately when the clutch is opened up. There’s no need for the rider to be concerned with twisting the throttle for power because it’s already PRELOADED.

I've been doing a lot of practicing, my wife knows I've been watching your videos, we were out riding the other day and I made a u turn, using what I've seen you do and say, and from nowhere my wife said " good job " that felt good.
I didn't think anyone would notice but me. Again thank you for making me a better and safer rider. Not just for me, but also for keeping my wife safe while riding with me.

Jimbo brother... Man it is my absolute pleasure. I think that's awesome because if your wife regularly rides with you, she noticed the difference in your riding. That is outstanding!👍🏾 And most importantly, you're insuring that she's safe and in so doing, she will feel safer. At the end of the day, that's really the most important thing... Our safety.
      Excellent job Jim!!

I cant speak for anyone else, but I would think there are others like me. My fear isn't so much that I'm afraid of getting hurt from leaning my bike, but the fear of damaging my motorcycle. I am retired after 40 years as a long haul trucker. I live on a very small income and I can barely afford my road king. If I damage it, its gonna take money that is hard to come up with for repairs. I'm pretty good at slow turns, but I am not to the point that I could drag my floor boards. Love your Vids, and I'm gonna keep trying to get over the financial fear!

    • @heybruh3274

You're not alone brother. My fear is also damaging the bike. If I hurt myself at slow speed, then I just get time off work. :-)

I understand completely. When you get a chance, give this video another look. I stress that you don't ever have to scrape your floorboards. That is not the point of this. It will be a goal for some, but not for all. You say that you're pretty good at slow turns already. That's great!👍🏾 That's the goal. Just keep practicing what you already are good at because it's all perishable.
Oh yeah, congratulations on your retirement buddy!👍🏾😊

One simple thing makes these videos better than Jerry's. The fact that you can hear the throttle on the audio. Thanks for emphasising the importance of preloading, I recently did the learners course in Au, and my instructor never mentioned it once during the 2 days, but was telling us not to rev the bike - I think to preserve his company’s bikes..we then headed out onto the road and many of us stalled out there, lucky nobody was injured!

Hi Robert. Preloading is IMO counter intuitive. Late in life biker here, roughly 14 years experience First bike a tiny cruiser 600cc, then 2002 Honda VTX 1800 for all but 8 months of my experience. My bike was down for mechanical issues for 5 long years. Getting the bike back up with new rubber, brakes, and fluids has been a couple of months. I was semi worried if I still had it!! Quickly found the juices and muscle memory was stronger than I expected. During the couple of months of getting the bike ready to ride I stumbled on your awesome videos. Back to my opinion that pre loading being counter intuitive has to overcome muscle memory to slow throttle/gas when approaching a slow speed maneuvers. That’s why I say counter intuitive. Like when I learned snow skiing. Counter intuitive is to lean back skiing down a mountain and you’ll crash. Lean forward is what they tell you and it works. So during one of my first back in the saddle rides I took each opportunity to make a tighter u-turn than I would normally want to take on. Usually I would ride around a building if I could avoid a u-turn. After watching your vids I was confident to exploit my talents I already possessed in using throttle against the rear brake. Your explanation is so perfect. Here in Texas we’ve been snow ❄️ and iced in so no opportunities to do anything right now when I got the bike ready kind of sucks. However here in Texas in a week it could be 70* so riding has to wait a little longer. Shiny side up! Thank you Robert!,

I've also found while teaching my son that not only preloading and keeping it loaded matters but that he keeps his nose pointed in the direction he is turning so he's always looking where he wants to go. I've found if he does this his turns are cleaner and tighter. I measured out the figure eight the msf class teaches and set him to doing it. But after realizing it was way to easy for him I started shorteninghis box on him till the box was well under half the size. He kept it loaded but more importantly he kept his nose pointed where he wanted to be. It was all in great fun trying to trip him up just a little but not only did he not trip up he rode that box like a pro. When we first tried this exercise the day before he struggled but the next day. After watching your video he improved and no longer struggles. We discussed your video and I told him I also thought he wasn't turning his head far enough and he commented how he was looking the rest of the way with his eyes . That's when I suggested to point with his nose not his eyes so between a little tweak on how to look and keeping it loaded he's turning into a pretty great slow speed rider. Thank you for passing on what you have learned through all your years as a motor cop. What you do is a very valuable service to riders everywhere.

Im so stoked about my progress so far but know I am far from where I want to be befpre I really venture out. I have a decent parking lot close to my house which I practice at than I finish with going on my designated route I follow and every session I add 1 more leg to my route each session. Robert, this is the most important video I have ever seen on motorcycle control technique. I have watched this over and over in order to grasp every pearl of motorcycle wisdom you have put forth here. I’ve watched every one of your practice sessions, and I practice a lot, especially in my head (even in a distant land as I’m overseas with the military,) but this video and the one on rear braking are the keys to really understanding how those 3 points of control - friction zone, rear brake, and pre-loaded (and loaded) throttle - makes all motorcycles safe, and fully controllable. Without this control, leaning equals dropping. Thank you for your profound teachings. Keep up the excellent work.

At 21:22 What I learned was not so much the position of your clutch hand, but noticed that you sit straight up while the motorcycle leans during turns rather than you leaning together with the motorcycle. In other words, I learned & observed your body position, not clutch position. (although you haven't mentioned body position, as least not yet)
Thanks for all your efforts which benefits us all. Thumbs up!

    • @BeTheBossOfYourMotorcycle
      @BeTheBossOfYourMotorcycle  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Thanks Jeff. But just to be clear, the position of your clutch (being in the friction zone) is the most important thing. Body position isn’t important at all as it pertains to making turns. Counterbalancing just makes the rider feel the sensation of falling less.

Felt like I took a step back with my skills when handling the Street Glide, but will practice what you are preaching. Biggest thing I learned today from your video here was to ***listen*** to my engine once I had the throttle above idle in the preload stage. I know how you feel man. Been a sport bike guy all my adult life made the switch to a bagger a couple years ago. Its a different world. My problem with leaning is not fear for injuries its fear of scratching that expensive bike and being embarrassed. Ive tried watching ride like a pro but to be honest Mr Jerry is just not a people person. So it kinda turns people off from getting the whole idea of it. This guy here is awsome and explains things clear. Ive always watch the police riders at the bike rallies and I plan to keep practicing till I get that good. Ive always had skill on two wheels but low speed skill on a 800 lb bike is a learned art for sure. Im glad I found this channel bc I read a post the other day on a vid that said I will always laugh at the guy duck walking his bike but will never laugh at the guy who drops it from trying to do it right. Definitely about to hit the subscribe button. And good luck with your change over. My wife laughed at me the first time I rode off and reached my feet for the pegs behind me instead of the floor boards in front of me.

The way you present yourself and the skill training is excellent and not talking down on putting a foot down or duck walking while learning is great. I just purchased my first cruiser a couple weeks ago, Yamaha Star 1100 Custom Midnight. Coming from a Suzuki Bandit 600S. I was very intimidated by slow maneuvering do to the landing back rather than forward. Lets face it - scared :). Using your training I have become more and more comfortable and the pre-load plus adding power to the rear wheel when you feel like your going to fall works 100%.

This is a really great video! I think every rider can improve in some way and for me it's having the confidence to lean more on my heavier bike and "trusting and believing" as you say! (especially rights) I'd love to take a course from you are a gifted teacher. You also have a new sub - fantastic videos Robert.

This was great!! Thank you so much for this breaking it down even further . The video while showing your clutch hand positioning actually showed me more about the correct position to be sitting at Your arm position while holding on the both grips( I think have same bars) I’m pushing into my left side with my elbow and almost my knee but if I stayed upright better I’d have a bit more room to bring bars further over. Those little pieces like that of here’s “how and why “ are great for all skill levels.
