  • I grow hundreds of plants in my garden. I'm always adding new ones, editing and tweaking the ones that I have, and, in general, working to make my garden pleasing to look at, enjoyable to be in, and fun to watch grow and develop. In this video, I share some thoughts on how I corral my collection of plants to create a unified design.
My garden is in a constant state of change-"garden" is definitely a verb around here. 😜 I realize this type of gardening isn't to everyone's taste and/or may not be what you're looking to do. If that's the case, let me do the experimenting for you. I hope you'll follow along. Don't forget to LIKE & SUBSCRIBE.
My garden is in Portland, Oregon. USDA Zone 8b.

In addition to repeating colours, I appreciate your use of layering and the variety of plant textures. That the colours of your hardscaping and fabrics speak with your plantings is next level. What a comfy and gorgeous space to spend time in.

I always enjoy seeing videos of your gorgeous garden! Thank you for sharing! I live in Calgary, Alberta Canada - zone 4 and I think we're considered semi arid - so, quite different from your conditions in Portland. But... I see lots of plants in your garden that I am also growing. I love seeing how you combine and link flower, foliage furniture, container colours. Very inspiring! My garden is also a few weeks 'behind' this year but I'm kind of glad because after seeing this video, I think there are some different colour choices to make! Thanks Darcy!

Perhaps you heard me laugh out loud when you mentioned you don't consider yourself a plant collector🤣

Thanks for the tips. Your design and ways of repeating plants and colours has been an inspiration to me and I’ve been trying to practice this in my garden. I like lots of plants and I don’t have the space, so I’ve been using colour repetition vs drifts or planting in groups of 3 or 5 because I don’t have the space and want more varieties.

I love red flowers but this time of summer I find I have over done it….not sure how to cool things done.

Thanks for sharing. Is that Rhododendron a Percy Wiseman by any chances?

Close, but no. It's Rhododendron 'Coral Mist' which is quite similar in coloring and (as I recall) eventual size.

Hi ! I'm a bit like you, I like to have lots of differents plants, both for me and for wildlife. I try to make it kinda cohesive by trying to limit the number of different colours but sometimes I discover a new plant and can't "not have it" so I might try it and then give it to someone when my garden turns too much into a rainbow :D I have a question regarding your beautiful ceramic containers. I am in zone 8b too but in S-O of France and I wonder how you protect them from breaking when in gets too cold ? Thanks in advance !

In general, I haven’t had much trouble with my containers breaking in winter. Most, but not all, were described as frost resistant and that has born out. When I do lose one, it’s usually not one that is considered frost-proof, so doesn’t catch me by surprise.
