    You need to coat the entire motherboard in thermal paste next time.

    This reminds me of the AMD Duron and Athlon days (2002 +/- ) of painting the L2 cache links with conductive paint to unlock the multiplier and allow overclocking.

      You could also unlock multiprocessor mode and force multiplier by jumping pins (iirc).Tyan had cheap dual socket boards for XPs.

      Oh how I remember those k7's, also chipped a few die on those back in the day... some quit working some didn't. Lol. I use to get those used for nearly nothin then experiment with em, lots of fun.

    Thats not your everyday paste. Thats kingpin stuff (if I aint wrong) and you wanna use that if you wanna go LN2, which this guy clearly does, that blue piece of cloth like paper between the dimm slots is there for the moisture.

      @@andyk192 lol a myth? In a perfect world, you'd only have enough thermal paste to fill in microscopic gaps between the 2 metal substrates and no more. There isn't a thermal paste out there that transfers heat as effectively as copper or aluminum so over applying it like this makes no bloody sense.

    • @mitchc.7046
      @mitchc.7046 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thermal paste is meant to fill in tiny imperfections in the metal finishing process too small to see with your eye.... Extra thermal paste will not fill in those gaps any better, it just makes a mess.

    • @TheRailroad99
      @TheRailroad99 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I made quite a lot of tests with different heat sources (CPUs, transistors, other ICs). Too much thermal grease makes a real mess, but thermally its not any worse than a decent amount. Just be careful not to get it into the socket.
      Too little however is very bad, especially in the long term. Once the paste starts to dry it contracts, which makes too little thermal grease a bad option.
      If you apply enough, thermal paste does work for a very long time. Depending on the heat density and the paste used it can easily work for 20+ years. With normal PC compound I would change it after 5-10 years. (For anyone interested: usually the pure white cheap grease holds up the best in long term stability, however it performs a bit worse than most PC formulas, usually (but not always) the grayer the paste, the better the heat transfer, but long term stability gets worse.)
      BTW he uses so much to stop condensation buildup I guess, as this clearly was (or is) an LN2 rig. (blue low temp thermal grease, towel between RAM slots etc.)

    I need to ask. Since it has more or less been proven that Coffeelake CPUs can run on Z170 and Z270 boards, why did Intel decide to lock out compatibility? Does it simply come down to the money they would make selling new chipsets to motherboard vendors?

      It's all about the benjamins, and before power delievery could be use as arguement they could have decide which board supports which cpu. Obviously the cheaper h- and b- line has limuted option as their power stages/power delievery are watered down version.

    if i flash the bios with the 8700k micro code will i be able to use the laptop with older cpus (aka skylake or kaby lake) as usual or will i have to reflash the motherboard again to use those older cpus?

      If you mean motherboard like this sure if you keep an old bios on the 2nd bios chip.

      tanx for yur promt response but i didnt explained myself very well , my motherboard doesnt have dual bios , just one bios chip so my question is if i modify my bios and add the 8700k cpu microcode and lets say does not boot or does not function properly (aka high temps , blue screens , wont boot at all ,you name it) with this moded bios i still can use my old 7700k without any issue?

      Yes it should work if you just add the microcodes to an existing bios I think, but I havent tried making bios myself.

      If you're referring to the Clevo LGA laptops there's a couple of covfefe lake bios threads on notebookreview forums. One modder has it working fully without replacing 6700K/7700K ucode, they still work. There's another team doing it but don't yet have everything fully working yet e.g. audio boards on some models, HT on the 12 thread 8700/8700K CPUs as they are porting the bios from later clevo models (not starting with Z170/Z270). The LGA socket MSI hasn't been touched AFAIK

      Ben Greening tanx for your info and you guessed right but i have an eurocom tornado f5 so i guess ill have to wait some one messes with that model , i guess youre refering to mr fox who got a 17 inch clevo working with a 8700k , i wonder if a 15 inch tornado will be able to keep the 8700k at decent temps , if not the non k version is sexy too according to ark its 65w tdp chip as opposed to 95w from the k version
