You know what struck me - Richard asks and he's unable to meet Jimmy's eyes; fearful of what the answer will be. For a guy as fearsome as Richard, it shows there is some vulnerability there. Great acting.
His vulnerability was his face. He always felt like an outcast. He fought for his country and people were horrified or amused at the sight of him as if he was a circus show, even though he had gotten that fighting for his country. Harrow would have been a different man if he came back with his face intact. That was the only real weight he carried back from the war.

Richard was weeping when he walked in on the dead body of Angela. I loved when he explained to Nucky that he whacked Manny Horvitz for killing Angela and NOT because of Jimmy. Richard was my favorite character.
Harrow breaks me. Can't even imagine how alone and isolated he must feel, completely detached from society. It's just a show, but it's so convincing acting with so much conviction. Feeling empty inside, yet still has so much to give. Dude made me weep too many times.
I have a theory I haven’t seen anyone else mention: I think a big reason Jimmy immediately befriends Richard is partly as a way of making up for failing Pearl. When Pearl gets her face slashed and her beauty stolen, she’s aware of how others will see her from that point onwards and the horror she will elicit from them. So in a moment of despair, when she asks Jimmy “who’s going to love me now?” Jimmy failed to answer her. He failed to reassure her of her worth and lovability. She felt utterly hopeless as a result and sadly kill3d herself to escape the pain of societal rejection. I think that experience of losing Pearl gave Jimmy a FAR greater empathy towards those who were disfigured or seen as physical outsiders. Those who as a consequence of their disfigurement now felt unlovable. So I think Jimmy really wanted to make sure Richard knew he was worth something, and to save him from the isolation and rejection that caused Pearl’s self deletion. In fact Richard almost does the same in the woods until he’s interrupted, but it was Jimmy’s love and loyalty in this scene that kept him from attempting it ever again. Jimmy couldn’t save himself but he did save Richard.
The part that struck me about this scene was at the end when Jimmy touches Richard hair. That gesture shows just how much Jimmy loved Richard and valued his friendship. At that moment Richard knew that Jimmy's answer to his question " will you fight for me" was genuine and real
Also after Jimmy gives his speech at the Babetts club it was Rixhard that Jimmy chose to go over and talk to. He said we did it pal, you are a part of this and anything you ever wanted is yours etc. They were true friends and brothers.

I loved that scene and this one. The woodsman knew exactly why Richard was out there but in a very respectful manner, so as not to add to Richard's obvious mountain of shame, told him he was making a mistake. Beautiful writing.
These 2 are my favorite characters from the show. They are both veterans who have survived the war; But they both came back injured, physically and mentally... Each one knows how the other feels and that's what brings them closer together....Epic

Extremely hardened, tough men having tender moments is always such an interesting dynamic. It's not only the stuff of movies either, the bond between men that have been in the trenches together (both literally and figuratively) are some of the strongest, most intimate bonds that exist. It's truely a bond of brothers that would go to hell for each other.

Since I was also in a Recon unit, when we met we bonded. He was an amputee in a wheelchair and I would always shovel his driveway, take him to Dr appointments, and just sit and have a cigar and whisky with him and shoot the Sheet. I lost interest in the series after they killed off certain key characters (no spoilers), but I gotta say the build-up to this scene was perfectly executed... over the episode prior they really emphasized Richards loneliness and depression, then just at the highest point of tension they dropped this scene - was really well done.
What I like in this scene is at about 0:35 it goes from being a Colonel being a little irritated at his Lieutenant to two brothers in arms reaffirming their commitment to each other.

Will you fight for me in this context is a question that a vulnerable soldier is asking another fellow soldier. The brotherhood of arms. This isn't something that civilians can totally understand, I don't think. It's beyond our life experience, but we can understand the emotion behind the question all too well. It's akin to asking your hopeful if they love you, and hoping for that particular answer "More than anything."
Fun fact, the actor who plays Richard (Jack Huston) is about to direct his first movie soon. And he cast Jimmy (Michael Pitt) as the lead in that movie. It’s called ‘Day of the Fight’. It’s also going to have Ron Perlman and Joe Pesci.
The thing is, this is the first show in years which characters (apart from the main ones) develop equally great, whether for good or evil. So we don't concentrate in just one big main person or two like 99% of the shows. I don't think Nucky's character is weak at all, I just think every fucking character on this show is a quality actor with an amazing story.
the reality of combat changes a person forever......The shared extreme hardships, violence, death, gore, blood-shed, and the bonding that developes between warriors is beyond articulation or even understanding for the most part.....one returns from it with a sense of what really matters and what doesn't, the contrast between someone who has experienced it and one who has not, is night & day. One longs for the bonding, the brother hood that war in it's strange and morbid way creates amongst the warrior's.
I have found that the greatest mistake, when watching any scene with Richard Harrow in it, is watching the center of his face where the mask meets what remains of the skin. Despite the character's efforts to become socially presentable, there is an essential flicker of human expression, of humanity, which is snuffed out with the mask.
This is seriously one scene that has made me tear up. Just the acting, setting, characters, just so fucking emotional for me. The steps Jimmy make. The quietness. And his "of course I would, right down to the very last bullet" that just makes me wanna cry and cry and wish this show and wish Richard and everybody in his life lived happily.
The scenes with Richard dealing with his loneliness and Capone talking about his son and singing to him are the most test jerking scenes in the whole show.
Had my girlfriend and I in tears. After Jimmy's response we balled. I honestly thought Jimmy would say something that would hurt Richard but his response and the way he holds Richards head was just beautiful. Them two guys are why i keep coming back to this series

Holy fuck the emotional impact of this. Richard probably hasn’t ever felt a connection as deep as he did w Darmody, at least not since his scarring, and in the way that they share a pain and want only to bring one another up.

This isn't something that civilians can totally understand, I don't think. It's beyond our life experience, but we can understand the emotion behind the question all too well. It's akin to asking your hopeful if they love you, and hoping for that particular answer "More than anything."

Fun fact, the actor who plays Richard (Jack Huston) is about to direct his first movie soon. And he cast Jimmy (Michael Pitt) as the lead in that movie. It’s called ‘Day of the Fight’. It’s also going to have Ron Perlman and Joe Pesci.

The thing is, this is the first show in years which characters (apart from the main ones) develop equally great, whether for good or evil. So we don't concentrate in just one big main person or two like 99% of the shows. I don't think Nucky's character is weak at all, I just think every fucking character on this show is a quality actor with an amazing story.

the reality of combat changes a person forever......The shared extreme hardships, violence, death, gore, blood-shed, and the bonding that developes between warriors is beyond articulation or even understanding for the most part.....one returns from it with a sense of what really matters and what doesn't, the contrast between someone who has experienced it and one who has not, is night & day. One longs for the bonding, the brother hood that war in it's strange and morbid way creates amongst the warrior's.

Phenomenal fucking character and performance.
I have found that the greatest mistake, when watching any scene with Richard Harrow in it, is watching the center of his face where the mask meets what remains of the skin. Despite the character's efforts to become socially presentable, there is an essential flicker of human expression, of humanity, which is snuffed out with the mask.

Amazing acting.
This is seriously one scene that has made me tear up. Just the acting, setting, characters, just so fucking emotional for me. The steps Jimmy make. The quietness. And his "of course I would, right down to the very last bullet" that just makes me wanna cry and cry and wish this show and wish Richard and everybody in his life lived happily.
The scenes with Richard dealing with his loneliness and Capone talking about his son and singing to him are the most test jerking scenes in the whole show.
