    Happy new year 🎉 nice looking beds. I'm so glad I found someone that does videos in my same growing zone. There aren't many that do videos on 8b. I got a galvanized raised bed for Christmas. It's my first raise bed can't wait to plant in it.

    Hello neighbor! I’m in the Portland, Oregon area and we built our raised beds out of cedar fence boards and they’re going strong at 7 years in this PNW weather/rain. We’ve treated them with some orange oil/beeswax but not every year honestly. Hope yours hold up well too! A few cross 2x4’s (attached to the vertical boards you already have in there) that connect the long sides across your growing beds may help keep them from bulging out further too! Thanks for the inspirational video! Excited for the joy your project will bring to you and others in the coming years! 🎉

    I live in WA. After 20 years of mediocre blueberry pickings, I started pouring my cold Woodstove ash around my plants. Huge difference.

    I have a single raised bed made of these, it is shorter than yours, but I can tell you that the cedar started decomposing at year 8. I am in year 9 and they could be repaired (I am not repairing it, it now has plants surrounding it and will become a mound.). Oh, I am in Oregon, west of Portland.
    Your farm sounds delightful. It was fun to listen to you talk about it!

      Oh yay, that is very encouraging to hear especially with your rain load being the same. Thank you for sharing, I am so happy now. Thank you for watching.

    The raised beds look great! They always give a clean and tidy look! I'm in western WA too, zone 8a and finally overwintered rosemary last year! I planted it under a porch roof that overhangs the porch by 3 feet or so. I think the constant wetness is what does them in. I guess I'll see if it survives this winter too.

      I grew rosemary from seed, an put in flower bed last spring, it's totally fine, big. Heard saying if a woman can grow rosemary in garden "she rules the house ". ?? Something like that. We all know we do anyhow. Lol
      I'm cowlitz county zone 8 a or b, depends on the year

    Wonderful! Very attractive raised beds. We have used them for years, as we own a small cedar lumber yard. My husband spent 35 years as a general contractor and finish carpenter prior to starting the lumber business, so I am a bit spoiled. 😊 This year we did add galvanized screen under the bed frames to deter the infestation of voles that kept tunneling up into the beds. Hopefully that will keep them out. Happy New Year!

      Oh wow, you are spoiled in the best way!! I bet you have some amazing looking raised beds. I love the smells of milled cedar- I always love visiting the cedar lumber mill and taking in the beautiful smells. Happy New Year!!

      That's a good idea, we have like a central breeding spot for moles right in middle of the garden, after built 5 raised beds, now we put barriers, either weed barriers or the heavy 1/4 in mesh

    Hey Christi! Happy New Year! Hope these beds turn out to be worth every penny you spent! They look great. I'm at Bothell WA, 8b too. I got 2 raised beds made from cedar fence boards last spring. I used PNW's own organics bagged raised bed mix, and nothing literally nothing grew successfully in it last season 😢 the raised bed mix seems very weird 😐 it looks like fragrant mulch and fine wood chip. I've spent so much $$$ on it. Planning to top it off with compost this season to see if it works. Even marigolds couldn't grow in PNW's Own organics mix. I used cardboard at the bottom to sheet mulch at the base of the raised beds.

    My raised beds in tall containers settled quite a bit. Not a problem in a bed for annual veggies because I can add to the container. It is a bit or an issue with perennial plants. They will sink down.

  • @susanchristensen1500
    @susanchristensen1500 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Last summer I did same thing, used cedar fence boards an made foot an half wide by foot tall raised beds to go along the fence for beans, corn, anything actually 😊
    Your beds look great 👍
    🎉 Happy New Year

      So we put weed barrier in the beds, cuz we have lot's an lot's of moles, then filled them up, there like new, I'm sure they'll last awhile. My other beds like 5 yrs ago was made with all old wood from previous owners an there just good like when first made them,
      This year we're making 2 more beds out of old water heater cut from top to bottom, with bunch holes, then placed in ground level so can mow over if needed

      Happy new year! The beds were not too bad to build. The hardest part was trying to make them fit the land without leveling it (with how long the beds were).

    If I can make a suggestion, if your beds are not as loafy as you hope, and the boards not as easy to replace, why not just place new boards over the old boards? The old boards can continue to decompose, but they also protect your newer boards.

    • @followmyride6970
      @followmyride6970 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's what I was going to suggest. My guess is these might last 5 years.

      Beck Mill in Stanwood. It is a bare bones operation but the best prices and it is a 4th generation mill. Their wood is always thicker than the big box places- just stronger in general and for less.

    Can I ask the name of the Cedar Lumber Mill? I’m also in WA and would love to purchase better quality wood than HD has been offering lately. I have 10 raised beds in my garden, all used with fence boards but I need to make them taller because of back issues. Your beds look great! I absolutely love your garden

    • @littlerootsranch

      The mill is called Beck Mill, in Stanwood. They only do rough cut cedar. That mill had been in the Beck family for several generations. The owner is Ben, really nice guy.

    its crazy how much more affordable things are down south. I live in BC and we sell an organic soil for $75/yard, we have a non organic option also thats like $65/yard. Whats in your three way blend?

    Those beds look plenty big to plant down each side therefore doubling how many plants you can grow.
