I am here. I have been home gardening since I was five years old in 1945. Planting anything before April is really iffy. In these here parts they always said plant peas on Washington's birthday. Plant potatoes on St. Patrick's day. It never works. Early Girl tomatoes have always been grown here, but they always disappointed me. We have crazy seasons here, like snow on April 4th or anytime before that. 2023 was a bad year. We had a cold Spring and then a very hot dry Summer. My tomatoes did quite well in spite of it. I put them in the ground May 1st. Asparagus has always done very well.
I'm so sorry about your home. I know several people who also did not fare well after the record breaking freeze. I was so happy to find a PNW gardening channel, and love your informative and down to earth videos. I live in northern Kitsap County in Zone 8b, and trying to branch out to veggie gardening, so I've been enjoying going through your previous videos, and always excited when a new one is available. I hope more gardeners up here find your channel and support your efforts!
This winter was really tough for freezing damage. Right now I am waiting on insurance even though they claimed I would not need to wait on them. I just hope I can return home and things can get back to normal. Thank you for your kind words and thank you for watching.
Yay, I love super locals too. The water issues have been a mess. They have just started the rebuild- I don’t even want to talk about how long it has taken. :( Hopefully I am just a few weeks away from being home.
Thank you. We are still away from the farm and I am so ready to go back home to the farm. Yay for planting carrots. Mine haven’t come up yet but the peas and spinach came up immediately and the beets are just popping up. Carrots always take their time, lol (especially because I am using last year’s seed).
@@littlerootsranchThe forecast showed a bunch of frost up here in Lynden, so I held off on the carrots. I did order some plastic canopies off of Amazon that will protect my plants from the elements and animals……in theory lol Those should be here this weekend, so carrots and peas will be planted this weekend with the help of those. I am hoping you are doing well 👊🏻🌻👊🏻
Absolutely!!! So many things are so forgiving and a lot of times they surprise you. Generally plants suffer from being inside too long or improper hardening off- but the cool weather crops are pretty robust.
Portland Oregon here! Glad to find you! Its my 3rd year gardening and my first year starting from seed... Im winter sowing in jugs... This should be interesting... If all else fails I can fill in with some starts... Its always so exciting! And I love gardening in the Rain... The Loam smells so lovely... Thanks for the Vids, hope your house recovers soon!
That is the best thing about winter sowing- it is so fun and if it fails, we have all spring. As for the house, it is a waiting game with the insurance company right now :(
Hello, I’m happy I found this video, I am a new subscriber and I will continue watching your videos since I am starting gardening this year in my raised beds, I see you have good information and I feel I will learn a lot from you, I am in Kent WA, hope to see more videos. Thanks
Yay, I am happy you found my channel too. Thank you for your kind words and for watching. My house flooded so I am staying away from the farm so it makes it hard to shoot but I am hoping to film more.
Plant your rosemary against a building and on a side that is protected from wind. Put wood chips on the roots to insulate them. My rosemary is over 25 years old. I live in Centralia Washington. 8b
Thank you for those tips!! This winter, when we had the cold snap I bundled them up and so far I am thinking they made it. I don’t want to count my eggs before they hatch, but my goal this year was to be successful with overwintering young rosemary. ❤️
Thank you for this, Christy! (Sorry if I spelled your name wrong!) I’ve winter sown in about nine jugs so far this month, but just planned on sowing my carrots outside later on. Guess I’ll be putting on my rain boots and rain coat tomorrow and will do it now. 😂 It’ll be fun to see how they do. I’m zone 8b, also (Renton/Maple Valley), so I pretty much live for your videos (no pressure, lol). Take care and I hope your home is back to normal soon! ❤
Thank you!! Winter carrots are the best, I always plant them after the December freeze when we have a warmer break like we are having now and enjoy them in the spring. It is so fun to see them pop up. Thank you for watching!! I am hoping my little home can be repaired soon and things can get back to normal.
@littlerootsranch Hi, sorry I 4get check the replies. Awesome, I have peas, onions and kohlrabi coming up, oh an spinach and Brussel sprouts, exciting 😁
Im subscribed but youtube just now showed me this. I don't think it's too late! I'm going to try planting some seeds this weekend! Right now I'm eating weed salads... miners lettuce and shotgun weed (Im sure it has a real name, lol). I still have winter squash from the fall that tastes great. I can't wait for more variety!
My raspberries have taken over my yard! I was ill earlier in the year and then my husband took us on vacation in May. I feel torn on keeping them, I have given away many raspberry clumps but somehow I still get overwhelmed by them! A shame because they are truly delicious and bountiful. How can I tame my raspberries!? Love your channel!❤
Raspberries can get very wild, I hear you. I mow around mine to beep them confined to an area (including mowing babies that grow out too far). You can also dig down and put a metal barrier- though they have been known to get through that as well.
Howdy from Tillamook OR! I'd love a video on amending soil in raised beds. Last year was fantastic. I stuck to a schedule and fertiilized every 2 weeks. This year I need to sift my soil and amend because it's been a few years since we filled them and I'm doing a full rotation on things but have 0 idea of how to do it. Hope the house gets back to normal soon!! ❤❤
I have been to the Tillamook factory before.. yum 😋. That is a great video idea. I always recommend going through the hassle of soil testing if you can because then you can see what you are heavy on, and what you need. I am hoping for things to get back to normal sooner than later too.
Thanks for the videos! I used to own a house on Camano island, so it was great to discover where your farm is! I’m new to gardening and your videos have really helped! I really enjoy the comfy- conversation style to the info you share, thanks 😊
Hi Christi! Long time, no see! I've been checking youtube often for any updates from you 😅 you must be busy now in this season ❤ have you tried growing okra? Any luck? I've heard we can't grow okra here because it never really gets so warm in the PNW
Our garlic is popping up too! This is my first year growing it. I'm in Salem, OR. I really want to grow the triple crown blackberries but I'm afraid they will take over everything!
I would be interested in knowing if the Triple Crowns take over as well. She's got them interplanted so I assume not but if you find out I would appreciate knowing.
Have you tried doing it with artichokes? I'm in zone 8a and a few years ago I planted a few artichoke seeds in late November in a raised bed and covered them each with a humidity dome and they came up. I planted them where they didn't get enough light and I didn't water them enough in summer. One is still hanging in but I've never gotten more than one artichoke from it But I do know they need their chill hours. So I would think, they would be a candidate for your garden too. Your video has inspired me to now go out and do what you are doing and plant some more artichoke seeds in sunnier spots. Yesterday was in the high 60s here and low 60s and 50s at night but we also have been getting drenched with rain. Oh well, it would be a fun experiment to see how well everything does.
Hi, questions. I'm hardening off my vegetable seedlings while weather is nice, - should still bring them in for at least another Month? Also have citrus I've been growing for 3 years, I bring them in in winter - if hardened off can they stay outside or should they also be brought in at nighttime colds below 40😊😊
I always try to start the hardening process off in overcast weather, but sunny weather works well just keep an eye on them. The process should take awhile, so starting now is good (I know many rush hardening off, which I understand). I have a lemon tree too- I would bring it out a little, but not overnight yet.
@littlerootsranch Hi, yep that's what I was thinking, I'll just be more patient. Lol I've been taking plants out anything above 50. Do have a umbrella over table if sun to intense. Thank you so much
Oh have a question? Have a raised bed along east facing wood fence-low light till like 10 am, what's best vegetable to plant ? Broccoli, cabbage, cilantro, parsnip seems to do good,
Morning sun is always the best but sometimes that is not always possible (a lot of my farm doesn’t have it with the beautiful trees that surround me). If that is the case, cool weather crops like you said are best. Try to put your heat loving crops where that morning sun can warm up the soil earlier in the late spring/early summer.
I always buy the Lutz ones from territorial and they grow fabulously. Every other kind from every seed house is hit or miss. I basically place my order from territorial only for those seeds every year lol.
So sorry to hear about your house! 😢 Glad to have this inspiration video to winter sow some things. I’ve never done it in beds like this and I think I’ll try it this year! Maybe starting with carrots and peas. 🫛🥕 Where do you buy your seed from? Especially in bulk like that! (I’m in the Portland area 8b.)
It has been so hard to leave my beloved home while it is being rebuilt and I am eagerly waiting to be able to return. For seeds, I usually buy from Johnny Select seeds, Osborne Seeds and Territorial (though most from the first two and especially if bulk).
Thank you for sharing! There's not many 8b/WA youtubers. Hi from Maple Valley 👋
Many moons ago I worked in Maple Valley, I loved that town.

I am sorry the weather got you! This video was solid and gives me courage to plant carrots now in one of my pots.
Thank you. We are still away from the farm and I am so ready to go back home to the farm.

I'm in Springfield OR. It's still so cold I'm scared to start planting. I'm taking this as a sign to go for it.

This has been my thoughts on same, cold hardy just plant an they'll grow. Thank you 😊
The peas and spinach came up right away. The beets are coming up now and the carrots are taking their time like normal lol.

Quedaron muy bien
gracias y gracias por mirar.
My garlic has also started sprouting! I know garlic doesn't really like to compete but I was curious about sewing radishes in between my garlic roast.
I have actually done just that and both were perfect. The radishes will be long gone before the garlic does most of its growing.
@@littlerootsranch that's wonderful to hear!
I started oats too for my chickens, they seem to grow at anytime of year, about a week ago, they are sprouting already

Can you do a raspberry video? I just got my first plants last year and I see that yours aren’t on a wire. It’s all new to me!
Yes!! I haven’t put a trellis up yet, but I will. I am notorious for being late at putting trellis up and hating my life when it is harder, lol.
What we got for February- march indoor/outdoor sowing?
I made videos for that too. Each month closer to summer opens up possibilities.
👍🏻

Yes, my area on wood fence is east an north, but surrounded by trees, however that's all I'm getting
