My wife is Indonesian, been to Java a few times for visits, but what I experienced there I feel is only a small fraction of the cultural and natural diversity of the country....completely different from, say, Papua or Borneo.
Greetings from Canada! My wife's hometown of Surabaya is so close to here. Man, I wish I knew about Trowulan last time we were there for a visit. It's mind-blowing that this rural backwater village used to be the capital of a once great civilization. This is what I love about your channel, it's not just stuff off the beaten track, it's like mini documentaries of things you'll never see on other travel vlog channels.
Sabbatical - I'm from New York too! Lived here now for 25 years. You summed up alot of what keeps me here. The biggest asset of Indonesia are the people. Its so refreshing to see the level of respect you show. Even learning Indonesian and greetings in Javanese! You speak well Bro! That's why you get positive vibes from Indonesians.
I am learning a lot about Indonesia watching these vlogs. I have little knowledge on Indonesia and this is giving me a much better vision of the culture and the people!
ꦔꦺꦴꦩ꧀ꦧꦺꦧꦶꦂ 😂 It’s not really the drinking during Ramadan that’s intriguing, but the fact that the man they referred to as the subdistrict head was there in the afternoon in his civil service uniform 😅 But you know what, maybe they got off early from the office that day. Anyways, it’s nice that you got yourself new drinking buddies. I do need to point out some things: 1.) Majapahit was not the last Hindu-Buddhist kingdom to fall, in Java alone there was Blambangan that only collapsed in the 18th century. 2.) Bali was not the only escape route for the loyalists of the Majapahit empire, those who resisted Islamization were also driven uphill to Tengger Highlands, East Java. If you go to Mt Bromo, you’ll encounter the local Hindus there. 3.) There’s no such thing as a “Muslim village”, at least not in this context. It’s just a village, the people who live there can be of any creed. Thank you for visiting Trowulan, it’s not a popular attraction even for local Indonesians.
I think learning Indonesian isn't that hard. I've picked up a few words myself from my visit there and from the Indonesians I've known. I wouldn't mind coming back and exploring it more. I explored old Batavia and that was really interesting.
Remember tho, if you want to socialize closer with them you need to learn the informal way of speak indonesian..... Because the formal way is sound kinda weird to us but we respect the effort
As an Indonesian myself, it is. in fact, due to our country's archipelago, Bahasa is a trading language that we used back then. It makes sense why it's so simple, and you can't say that in their old traditional language, waaayy harder.
"Mampir" doesnt exactly mean stay. More like "stop by" "visit for a few moment". But yeah still fascinating. Here it's easy to invite people you don't know to your house as long as you trust them or you see them as your brother/sister in the poetic way. Like in my ethnic group, when we meet someone with the same traditional surname with us or our traditional surname has brotherhood bound, we will be more kind to them & more likely want to get closer with them
Really excited for the next Indonesian episode! I stared learning Bahasa Indonesia this past year. I'm nowhere near fluent but I'm surprised by how much I could pick up on!
One point lesson on Indonesian: When you refer to the person you speak with, using 'kamu' is often deemed rude especially to strangers and people who seem older than you. You usually use the word 'bapak' (sir) or 'ibu' (ma'am) or kak (spelled 'ka', meaning big bro/big sis). What are you doing? --> is not "Kamu sedang apa?" but it's better to use "Bapak sedang apa?". It's a small thing, really, but you'll get even more respect if you apply this. Great video, Tommy!! Thank you for visiting.

Actually there are still descendants of Majapahit, one of which is on Mount Bromo, where the descendants of Majapahit are known as the Tengger tribe and their religion is Hinduism.
What saddens me is that there is an extinct custom in Java, maybe in other islands too; some people used to have pottery jugs (or 1 big jug) of drinking water in front of their houses for thirsty travellers. The water was nice and cold in the morning and curiously tasty as the jug aged. Smaller jug is called "kendi" (cun-dee), the big one is "gentong" (gun-tong). The "u" in cun and gun is pronounced like the "o" in reckon as in "I reckon you had a nice time around Trowulan".

Majapahit quite hardcore back in the days, yes, they defeated Kubilai Khan troops, Majapahit empire is so large from modern Indonesia-modern malaysia and brunei up until south Philippines, that the terms of Nusantara is first used widely (Nusantara = inter-island), for anyone who curious why Islam is the most prominent religion in Indonesia, because Islam did not comes with force, but from culture assimilation, that widely accept.
