Hunger claws at your belly. It tugs at your intestines, which begin to writhe, aching to be fed. Being hungry generates a powerful and often unpleasant physical sensation that’s almost impossible to ignore. After you’ve reacted by gorging on your morning pancakes, you start to experience an opposing force: fullness. But how does your body actually know when you’re full? Hilary Coller explains.

lycheeTM I suppose the next video is about the antidote...
TED-Ed this might be out of topic but when the video mentioned boiled potatos I had a lightbulb moment because I ate boiled potatos today
Woah
The worst is when you go out to eat and you end up over eating. Then you go home and lay down while your stomach is in pain and you are regretting it.
Nctzen & Monbebe yesss! That happened to me last Friday! Tbf, that Olive Garden was real good.
Do not lie down after eating
So true
I never regret food..
Mi Les why not? i always feel sleepy after
Then explain how we always have room for dessert.
it could be from us knowing we need things like sugar back when we were out in the wild. we make room for things that could save our life later on. but thats just an idea. im no evolutionary scientist
ProTayToe Gamer omg
@ProTayToe Gamer It's because sugar relaxes the muscle/nerves that are around the stomache. You'll feel less pressure which result in less of a full feeling. In other words the desert makes roomfor itself!
deserts are divine business, it's not within mortals understanding
Simple, we never listen to what our brain says!
Not sure if I feel more or less hungry after watching this.
Hey why mr gear here??
Could be either your just thinking about food lmao
omg i like sooo agree reatrt
My body doesn’t know i just keep eating till i get bored
Oh yeah yeah

I get full but also am soooo hungry at the same time

Is my body half full or half empty?
Your brain is fully empty :P JK
Continual Improvement it is fllpty lahf
Your body is twice the size.
It's half
your body is made up of 75% water so id say it is mostly full.
You’re full when it starts to hurt, right?
no. you are only full when the food starts going out the same end as it came in. up until that point you can keep eating.

I love watching videos about the human body. Every time I do, I am reminded how amazingly complicated it is, and how it practically manages itself on its own!
Same!
Human is a master piece!

Digestion is the topic that we're going to discuss about in our college tomorrow. Thankyou TED-Ed.........
I'd be interested to learn if there's a psychological aspect of hunger as well. I have food based PTSD and food insecurity, so I tend to unconsciously suppress minor signals of hunger until my blood sugar is lowered and I'm ravenous, and it feels like it's harder to stay full even with an otherwise filling meal.
Food based PTSD... Just imagining you being viciously attacked and tortured by a key lime pie

Try to eat at lower speed, maybe you can try to munch the food more. That’s what i always do, it helps to balance our diet and lower our food intake yet still feeling full

Your animation makes my body look so cute! I feel so safe and protected with an army of smiley face organs and hormones inside me! Unlike other videos that neglect to show the smiles and double down on the textures. I always feel iccy afterwards.

@@TEDEd Pardon me 🙋 , One thing from this subject { which is reflected in a comment on this video that's gotten over 8.5 thousand likes } is : Why/how then do we have room for dessert 🍨 🦧 ❓ 👨💼🤳🇦🇺🇳🇴
Awesome! I wish you could also explain why we lose appetite when we ignore the feeling of hunger for a few minutes
If you eat while pooping you create a neverending cycle of pooping-eating-pooping.
How is that a cycle ? Are you eating your poop ? That would be the exact definition of what goes around, comes around. Now that's a cycle.
processing of your food intake takes time. you can't poop immediately after eating.
Álvaro Lopes not true but i always thought that when i was little
That's basically what we all are doing but it can't be called a never ending process
no one needs to know about that infomation
This guys voice is so calming.
I can learn in peace! :)
this was so informative, i knew around 30% of whats been said in the video thank u so much
Thank you so much for such an amazing lesson 🤗
I learned from this video that "adviser" and "advisor" are both acceptable spellings of the word. I also learned that the TH-cam comments spell check prefers "adviser". Great video!
Really an amazing illustration...all the videos are in their best and easy to understand and it's Really really great in the animation videws....hats off to the innovative people who did those animations .I didn't used to comment on any videos but for you people i can't able to be not commented...really awesome works u r doing....
Another dense idea broken down beautifully with adorable, useful graphics. Thanks, Ted Ed (for helping with my homeschooling program)
you can feel the food entering in your stomach and moving through your intestines. Sometimes you will hear gurgling in your stomach when you eat. As you eat more your stomach expands and maybe you start to slow down with your eating and feel a little bit sleepy. At least that's how it is for me. Also the food starts to taste slightly different as you reach satiation. What once tasted amazing just tastes more ordinary or even not so good when you are full.
Thanks. I've been searching for this answer for a long while.
I was just studying this for my biology test tomorrow, great timing!
Right as i watch this i feel realy hungry
An excellent video if you ask me! I always
wondered how our stomach gets hungry
Omg the animation on this is everything!
I love this channel!! I never miss one of your vids

That's why we when we are so hungry, we eat continuously until we are full. What a great explanation between hunger and hunger satisfaction. 😊👍
not really for me i haven't felt hungry in a while now
I swear to god Ted ed has every answers to my questions
hey guys. thank you so much for making this and other videos. giving me something new to learn. i really enjoy your video. because its both entertaining and educating for me and my students. i really hope that you can explain about "stuffed nose". because to be honest, i really confused. oh, and how we can stop them. thank you so much. (i'm sorry for my bad english)
TED has been answering the questions we always wanted to ask
These are the cutest bio animations that I've ever seen.
Great vid, but the animation for the Vagus nerve was wrong, it does not travel along the spinal cord, rather it goes directly to the brain stem. Otherwise being fully paralysed would be a death sentence.
Very informative. Thank you!
these were hands down the best animations ted ed has done
This makes me hungry
nealnsandy why
I have something for you to eat ; P

I try to eat slower but before I even get the chance, I’ve already finished everything on my plate 😫
Thank you for this very informative videos
Amazing animation. Will never imagine my stomach something else but the growling-beast-of-hunger. Really good vid.
I’ve talked about this before but for all my life I’ve never known when I’m hungry and when I’m full. Normally I eat when everyone else eats or if it tastes good obviously. I can go without eating for many days but it is very unhealthy. I can’t recognize it. I hope this isn’t a very serious case. I doubt it.
When the angry stomach graphic growled, I felt that.
Thanks for your grateful advice. These video tips help me a lot. I think there is much another thing to know about this topic like Health Coach
Thank you so much for the very interesting and beautiful video at Ted Ed👍👍😀😀❤️❤️🌹🌹
2:22 That lightning speed animation is so funny 😂
Omg the way the person was eating the sandwich so funny
Thank you TED-ED for giving me an useful lesson! Pls reply
So many medical vocabularies are used in this video. I'm gonna rewatch it with a dictionary next time.
Also issues such as depression can alter these feelings . I haven't felt hunger without a stimuli since middle school , by stimuli I mean food or marijuana which tricks you into thinking youre in starvation triggering what is most commonly known as munchies.
Ted Ed you are the best Chanel on TH-cam
It dosn''t, my mom stops

Ah why does this happen😂🤣...I act so weird when I’m fulll😂🤣🤣
Thank you for sharing. God bless.
The animation is so nice.. It made me happy 😊
the greatest of TED-Ed is that you do not have to be a doctor or have a phd to understand the videos.
And once you get the general idea, it is much easier to stand in the correct path of health, learning and self improvement

Japan has a term called, “Hara Hachi Bu”, meaning, “Eat until you are 8 parts (out of 10) full, or 80% full.”. It took me a while to understand when my body is 80% full, but the trick is this. As soon as you are done with your first serving of the meal, this includes desserts and drinks, (not a supersize meal, just a regular size meal you would receive at a casual restaurant), check...
1. If you can move around comfortably, twist your body side to side.
2. You are feeling some slight fullness but not too full that you can’t do number 1.
3. You don't have the hunger strike anymore.
That's how I determine if I’m 80% full, and it has helped me control my weight ever since along with intermittent fasting.
Does watching something on your phone while you eat affect the signalling between your brain and body that tells you that you're full?
Cool video. Thank you.
thank you for subing ted de
