Ghost has a strong focus on blogging, email marketing and subscription revenue. It's open source and has numerous integrations for ecommerce, your own referral program and so forth. 07:03 Custom domain
Now it's time to set a custom domain for our website and blog. You'll need to register a domain name at Namecheap which is my preferred registrar of choice. Then, you'll need to set the DNS at Namecheap to point to Ghost.
12:31 Install a theme
Ghost, like WordPress works by way of themes. Ghost themes are beautiful, minimalistic and just work out of the proverbial box. You have a wide range of free theme, paid themes and can also source themes from various theme marketplaces if you like.
15:39 Hero image and a call to action
With most Ghost themes, the top section of your website is properly designed around having a compelling call to action to get your visitors to subscribe. You can also add in a hero image as well to design your website.
18:47 Logo and favicon
You should have a basic understanding of how to design a logo and a favicon. Of course, when you're ready to outsource this to a professional designer you should do exactly that.

Learn how to easily adjust your menus and your pages.

Ghost is an outstanding blogging platform. You have all the features and on-page SEO detail essential for strong rankings. On top of that you can adjust the date every time you update your content and can content lock your blog post with email only sections.

For paid subscriptions you'll need to connect a Stripe account. Once setup, you're ready to then set price points for people to subscribe.

this was SO helpful! I published my 100th piece on Medium yesterday and it's gone EXTREMELY well for me, monetarily, so I'm looking to actually make this a 'thing'. I also published a guided journal on Amazon and am working on a collection of memoir essays. I was looking at Substack vs. Ghost and some negative press about Substack made me hesitate. Hey David, thank you so much for this! I am new to Ghost and came back to this video several times for reference. Could you do a video going through your workflow using the Ghost interface? Maybe showing a bit more in depth how you would use it on a daily basis? Right now I am struggling to figure out how to use the Ghost newsletter feature, and how to create a post VS sending out emails. Keep up the great work and thanks again for your help
When you create a post you can choose to send it out to your list or not. I would use the unique selling point of Ghost and write content that's free but has a section only viewable to your list and other posts keep 100% private.

Yea I was finally able to fix that by flying home out of Vietnam and buying a proper Shure microphone in the States. My Zoom did a pretty decent job but it's way to sensitive :)

This video helped me greatly. I do have an issue that maybe you can answer. I created a few pages such as About, Privacy etc. when I link the page under the design tab, I copy the URL's and save but the live version asks for you to login instead of showing the page details. Something is not linking correctly. Any ideas? I've tried tons of things and can't seem to fix the issue. Thanks.

I don't recall actually. I would just do a trial and error approach with your image of choice to get it to your liking.

I'm having trouble with the publication icon. I even tried going through the Canva/remove.bg process but I keep getting the following message on Ghost: "Icon must be a square .ico or .png file between 60px - 1,000px, under 100kb."
I even played around to fit those parametrs/file type but just won't upload !

In short Ghost is easy to use, email marketing and paid subscriptions built in. Nice looking themes. But nowhere near the flexibility of WordPress.
For some reason I keep getting an error message saying I can only manually download this theme because direct install are only available on Ghot 4.0 -
I dont host Ghost on my computer so I'm not sure how to upgrade to 4.0? Should I just download and install this theme manually?

There is no cap.
When you finish a blog post you can:
Publish it on your site only.
Publish and email.
Email only.

They don't have to sign up to read the content. You mean remove the subscribe button? But that's the whole point of Ghost, to build an email subscriber base.

Sure. Ghost is more aimed at building subscription revenue but it's open source like WordPress and you can whatever you want :)

I've not found a solution, I personally only allow comments from paying subscribers on my Ghost site.
Great video. I know I'm late but when I add pages using the editor link like you suggested at 27:05 it doesn't work properly for me, when I go to test the site in an incognito browser it just prompts me to sign into my site then it brings me to the actual editor for that page. This is incredibly frustrating and I'd massively appreciate a reply.

There is no ideal integration for that, I would use something like Calendy for this use case. Ghost is more focused on blogging, email and building out a subscriber base.

In Ghost you simply highlight the text and there is an internal link button to use.
