That's what happens when you're born in musically driven families. They don't have much freedom to express their own sound. If they do, you'll get the same results as Setsu's mom. That is why some unlucky few burn out very quickly from the intense pressure.

Yeah, it sounds like a mix of plucking with the plectrum (generic term for a pick, not sure what the one used for shamisen is called) and left hand pizzicato (plucking with the left hand which is pressing down the strings) where he's essentially plucking the string as he lifts his finger off to change the pitch. It takes a lot of coordination to do that without it turning into a muddy mess (im speaking from experience, lmao, I still need to practice)😅
Well his grandpa mentioned that developing your sound takes a lifetime. Setsu as an artist will never be satisfied with his own sound, but he found out how his sound will be. It will evolve and improve. His grandpa knew this and didn't want setsu to get stuck mimicking him and waste time instead of starting to find his sound. Because remember she played for the grandma and said the song sounded completely different from how setsu played it, and he mimicked how his grandpa played. Meaning that matsugoro knew setsu was not gonna find his sound over night, it's a lifetime of evolving one will do with the shamisen.

In the chapter where Setsu plays his grandfather's song for the nursing home granny, it becomes clear that Setsu's sound is even more beautiful than the sound his grandfather had at his age. His grandfather never wanted Setsu to play like him. He wanted Setsu to find his own sound. Setsu's sound may even become more beautiful than their grandfather's when Setsu reaches his grandfather's age.
His Parents basically did what every Horrible Parents does, they hammered every Talented Kids based on what they wanted so they are burn out and true talent buried deep
I think his mother wants the best for him but also has High expectations which can turn her toxic. I think she cares she just struggles a lot to show it in a means way. She set up the competition so his sound wouldn't be hidden in obscurity like his grand farther. In the manga he takes on a job and she offers him tutors and the lot but he wants to take his own path . He's striving for independents while she's trying so hard to hold on to him but when she gets to close pushes him away, partly I think it's due to the fact she thinks all men will leave her because or her husband but then again I'm only theorising why she act like she does.
