It just made me more made then I already was, watching the anime was good don’t get me wrong but I knew the mom was going to be like that but what threw me over the edge was the mom dropping the trophy on purpose
If you ask me it's kind of stupid how the judging works in music comps, like his was clearly the best preference because of the style change, yet that caused him to lose points. Ain't no-one heard music before, especially classical every piece goes through a change of emotion, tempo, softness, season & so on.
That's what happens when you're born in musically driven families. They don't have much freedom to express their own sound. If they do, you'll get the same results as Setsu's mom. That is why some unlucky few burn out very quickly from the intense pressure.
I bet his grandfather would be so proud of Setsu when he switched over His Grandfather NEVER wanted ANYONE to try and copy his sound, that would mean losing all purpose for the Shamisen to be played. He just needed to find his own sound and play it HIS way, thats all his grandfather ever wanted

It will evolve and improve. His grandpa knew this and didn't want setsu to get stuck mimicking him and waste time instead of starting to find his sound. Because remember she played for the grandma and said the song sounded completely different from how setsu played it, and he mimicked how his grandpa played. Meaning that matsugoro knew setsu was not gonna find his sound over night, it's a lifetime of evolving one will do with the shamisen.

His grandfather never wanted Setsu to play like him. He wanted Setsu to find his own sound. Setsu's sound may even become more beautiful than their grandfather's when Setsu reaches his grandfather's age.
His Parents basically did what every Horrible Parents does, they hammered every Talented Kids based on what they wanted so they are burn out and true talent buried deep
I think his mother wants the best for him but also has High expectations which can turn her toxic. I think she cares she just struggles a lot to show it in a means way. She set up the competition so his sound wouldn't be hidden in obscurity like his grand farther. In the manga he takes on a job and she offers him tutors and the lot but he wants to take his own path . He's striving for independents while she's trying so hard to hold on to him but when she gets to close pushes him away, partly I think it's due to the fact she thinks all men will leave her because or her husband but then again I'm only theorising why she act like she does.

I think it's his sound coming to life, his grandpa said to steal it with his own. So I think he's using his own sound with his grandpa's determination and love for the shamisen. Setsu just needed his own sound to truly understand what his grandpa said in the first episode.
What was so annoying with this anime is how degrading his mother was with giving him his award. That woman dropped that in front of him and said “You’re not worth it”. 😠 I will say that she is a truly talented woman but treating your son with that much indignation makes her such a terrible mother.
