  • Welcome to episode 4 of the ATC 90 restoration. In this episode im going to be concentrating on stripping the engine down and inspecting for any damage or wear.
The first job on my list for this episode was to make a quick engine stand so that i could work on the engine without it rolling all over the bench. It was simply a case of cutting some steel box section into lengths welding them together measuring the hole centres drilling them out welding on the top plate and then giving it all a nice coat of paint to protect it from rust.
Once the engine was mounted tot he stand i could get on with doing a compression test before taking the head off. I removed the throttle valve from the carb so that when i am testing the engine is getting wide open throttle. As you saw from the video the test came in at 78psi which is very low so low that the engine might not even run or if it did it would have very little torque.
so after the test was done i set about stripping the engine down to its component form these was easy enough with all the correct tools and pullers ect and there were no real issues found apart from the low compression but thats easily fixed.
I then set about getting all the oil and mud cleaned from the casings with the help of my parts washer, then when clean and dry i put them into the sand blaster and blasted off all the old paint and years of oxidation which left the casing lovely and fresh if not a little dull but i had a plan for that.
To sort out the dull casings that would have originally been vapor blasted i polished them up with a soft wire wheel and as you can see from the video it leaves a lovely bright shine without damaging the casings and is the perfect substitute if you dont have access to a vapor blasting set up.
I then sat the polished items aside and set about prepping the other items for paint that meant a thorough degreasing, masking up any areas i dont want paint on or in and finally loading the parts into the spray booth. I then set about priming the parts i used a light grey on the silver casings and black on the barrel as it always makes sense to use a light coloured primer under a light colour for 2 reasons one is for coverage and shade of colour and second for stone chips so they wont be as visible.
once the primer was dry i checked for any defects which there were one of so i could proceed to base coat silver then a nice coat of scratch resistant clear. Then as usual my ending shots to show the progress ive made.
Next episode will be an in depth build up of the engine so i hope to see you all there.
I hope you enjoyed the video
Stay Tuned and i will see you all again soon.

So relaxing to watch and love the sounds of turning wrenches, clanking of metal and snapping of breaking loose the nuts. Thank you for not having annoying music in the background. You had me hitting the like button at building the engine stand. I sat and watched you leisurely take the engine apart, piece by piece without having to chase it around on the table. There's much to be said for "working smart".., incorporating ergonomics in the design for comfort and starting a job with a plan of attack and a procedure. I would also add, the engine stand also came in handy for filming purposes. As I've said before, you have a good work ethic and your head is obviously bolted on properly.
I admire a man who looks after his tools and stows them away when not in use, it says a lot. Keep up the great professional work and much enjoyable videos!👍👍👍👍👍!

These engines were so under stressed that they wore like Iron! I started in 74 on a 90....then in 80 on a 110 that I built to 125cc with Hi-Comp piston, 26 Mikuni, Cam, intake, header and full porting. Even with double the power, it ran hard for years with no issue. I had several 200X and 250R models ending in an 85 that was built by Paul Turner to 37 HP. Honda built them well with few design flaws and they had potential to be built with no real loss of reliability!

Thanks for your video, which I always enjoy. You used a silver paint for the cases. I was able to find a silver stove paint that matches the original colour quite closely. It proved to be very durable, and because it was a stove paint, it handled the heat generated with no problem.

In one of your future episodes could you go over your paint mixing methods. I currently use spray cans mostly and get nice results. But I recently picked up a nice set of paint guns from a closing body shop and would love to know how its done. Since every time i see you do it you make it look easy
