- Im Mai 1995 flog ich mit dieser CUBANA IL-62M, CU-T1283 von Berlin-Schönefeld mit Tankstopp in Las Palmas auf Gran Canaria nach Havanna auf Cuba.

The high-pitched, shrilling, ear-piercing scream of those engines reminds a lot of my many flights on jets like the DC-9 and the BAC-111. Sweet memories....back when flying had 'smells' and 'sounds'...!!
I remember being involved with BAC-111s when working at Birmingham Airport in the 90s - wonderful smoke trails they left behind on take-off 😂
The "Soloviev Symphony"!
No western engine sounds like a soloviev. Not even close. They have that high pitch scream that western jets don’t have. Maybe something to do with the compressors?
@@rixxroxxk1620 yes, true, the only western engine that displayed a somewhat similar high pitch was the RR Spey.
@rixxroxxk1620 Agreed, most western engines have a growl to it rather than a scream like the ones in this video. The only engine I could think of that sounds similar is the JT3D

I flew on the Cubana IL-62 between London and Havana with a fuel stop at Gander in Newfoundland (Canada) early 1990's. We departed London late April and was sunny, hot and 29°C (84°F). We arrived Gander and was snow 2°C (35°F). We arrived Havana and was very hot at 33°C (91°F)
Legendäres Flugzeug. Dieser Triebwerkssound und die Vielfalt an Flugzeugen, die es noch bis in die 90er Jahre gab... Traumhaft. Sowas erlebt man heute nicht mehr

What an amazing flight video! 💚💚💚 There are many videos out there but this one is sensational. Listen to those engines spin up, sounds of the 70s. The videographer was excellent and very meticulous. Like another commenter mentioned, this is from planes and times when flights had distinctive, amazing SMELLS and SOUNDS. All of that is gone, sadly. :(

Ein paar Stunden auf dem Sitz neben den Triebwerken mitfliegen und es gibt den ganzen Urlaub keinen Streit mit der Liebsten, ...weil man taub ist die nächste Zeit und man einfach nicht hört, was die Frau sabbelt und einen ärgern könnte 😂... im ernst, daheim beim Anschauen des Videos ist der Sound der Triebwerke schon sehr interessant aber eine längere Flugreise hätte ich bei dem Lärm live nicht machen wollen.. da kann man auch seine Pause im Turbinenraum von einem Kraftwerk machen 😅

What a sweet sound.
At 31:12 it sounds like the inboard engines (#2 and #3) were shut off right after touchdown (only the outboard engines are used for reverse thrust on the Il-62). Never seen or heard anything like that before. Crazy Cubana!
No it just sounds like.... the inner engines go to idle... but 1 and 4 get louder so the compression of the Audio-Track brings 2 and 3 down, they come back after reverse is shut down....
Yes you are right, I just noticed that for the first time, that they shut down both inner engines. So far it’s enough for thrust reverse and taxiing to the terminal.

So interesting. Most modern Airline SOPs require the engines to cool down for a number of minutes. Not here!

Diese IL-62M erinnert mich an die Boeing 727. Beide haben eine tolle Silhouette durch das T-Leitwerk. Die Boeing 777 könnte man
auch einigermaßen leicht mit T-Leitwerk der Boeing C-17 umbauen. Wenn die zwei Triebwerke dann am Rumpfende angebracht
werden, was großflächig leicht möglich ist, ergibt sich kein Giermoment mehr. Die Triebwerke schieben dann das Flugzeug über die
Rumpflinie an. Den Boeingwerken versichere ich 500km mehr Reichweite oder auch Treibstoffeinsparung von 5 - 8%.

En 1994 hice HAV-BER Schonefeld con Cubana de Aviación IL 62 y al vuelta fue igual a este video,SXF-LPA-HAV. Para no olvidar ese ruido de los motores del avión. Sin entretenimiento a bordo,nada de nada. Increíble

hatte den selben flug 1987, allerdings mit tankstopp in gander(canada). es gab nichts zu essen. nur cuba libre für die piloten.
Bin 1986 mit der Interflug nach Bulgarien geflogen . Ein tolles Flugzeug 👍👍👍👍👍

Was für eine tolle Gelegenheit die IL-62 auf der Strecke nach LPA zu fliegen. 😍 Soundtechnisch war die IL-62 einfach in der Königsklasse 😅 Aber sag mal, was hast du da für eine Linse auf der Kamera gehabt damals? Sieht so ein bisschen nach Fish-Eye aus....

Very nice video, thank you for uploading. :) How feels the acceleration while Takeoff in the IL-62 compared to modern aircraft ? And can you remember if it was way louder in the cabin or just minimal difference ?
Please watch the video again and turn up the volume, I guarantee tinnitus! So much for the volume on board, which became significantly quieter after the end of the climb phase!

super! flog 1995 zum ersten Mal in der Starclass von Martinair von den Niederlanden nach Kuba. Später flog ich mit diesem Flugzeug von Havanna nach Mexiko! Gespenstisch. Einmal und nie wieder. Ich verstehe übrigens, dass Cubana nicht mehr fliegt, das Land ist völlig bankrott.

due to the fact, that the IL-62M have only thrust reverser on both outside engines, that’s why to avoid accelerate the thrust on the inner engines during thrust reverse, they switched them off! So far the trust reverse doors were closed just before touchdown! So if those switches on that the reverse doors are on reverse position don’t give the feedback that everything works well, the crew could abort the landing and take off again.
So much for 120 second cool down haha

You can use reverse thrusters on the ground
Uninterrupted airflow over the wings was one of the main advantages the Soviets liked to brag about- a clean wing meant less drag and more lift. The main problem with this layout is you need to put the stabilizer someplace and it usually ends up at the top of the vertical fin where it can be blanked out by the wings in severe stall conditions, making it impossible to get out of the stall. Another problem with the 4 rear engine design is lack of redundancy. If one engine fails explosively, it tends to take its neighbor with it (podded under wing engines even on four engine aircraft are less likely to suffer that issue). The Soviets, proud as they were, eventually shifted their civilian aircraft design to underwing engines towards the end of the Cold War. The Il-62’s replacements (Il-86 to some extent, more so Il-96) used underwing.

The flights over the Atlantic are against the winds from the West, so the Il-62M could not reach Cuba without a fuel Stopp at Gran Canaria in Spain.
In the opposite direction the Ilyushin could ride on the Jetstream wind.
