    I always enjoy watching a true Craftsman working. I'm retired now but I did specialty welding, fabrication and repair. Aside from the skills needed to complete a repair, attention to the smallest detail is what sets a Craftsman above just a worker. I took great pride in doing my work to the highest level. You do the same.
    Sadly, we are dinosaurs. Hardly anybody works like that anymore and that's a shame.
    Best regards

    Greetings from Maine, Dave! I'm a carpenter/woodworker/cabinetmaker/mechanic/farmer/history buff, and I've been watching your videos ever since I found a "physician's buggy" free for the taking 3 or 4 years ago. The undercarriage is in pretty good shape, but the body, upholstery and wheels are all shot - just enough wood and leather left to use for patterns. Thank you for such a thorough (and continuing) education in making wheels. Now I need to practice on some old wagon wheels while I watch your videos over and over . . . This has become my Friday night tradition -- and I love it!

    I was also looking at the lap joints thinking that one cut on the short edge was to short? Should have known better, you could then see the joint adjusted with the Hacksaw so it was perfect, learnt something else today as usual from watching Dave.

    The significant lesson for me from this video, is the importance of marking as-built elements in place and matching new elements to existing structure. No amount of measurement can reproduce an element well and in least time as the way you do it. I seems the obvious way to do it until you are faced with the task for the first time. Watching you do it helps a lot. Thanks for this excellent video.

    • @EngelsCoachShop
      @EngelsCoachShop  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, doing a repair in the middle, and having the steel runner still fit, is a challenge. That element is missed by many, but evidently not by you. Thanks.

  • @DeereX748
    @DeereX748 ปีที่แล้ว

    Two words about sweeping sawdust: Shop Vac. You're amazing with your saw cuts and how well the fit is afterward with little to no trim work or chisel shaving. For those cuts in the middle where you turn your saw blade sideways, have you ever tried an oscillating saw? I never stop enjoying watching you work.

  • @barkingdoggai
    @barkingdoggai 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Well done. You bring an understanding of how things were done by native craftsmen in days long ago. About the only thing that appears in public and is a work of art, is your work. Your videos should be made available to the education professions to be an example to the kids what quality was in the past. Other examples I’ve seen are gunstocks made for my shotguns and those put out by Kolar on their guns.

      I do things like that in my free time. Not fast but precise as possible. They are old wodden play toys. I use so far as possible old wood what is like the lifetime of that toy. I'm looking for old wood or furniture on sesond hand markets or get some really old stuff from France or Poland. Most of these toys have a romantic base and some of them are really pricy but at the end you have to see the eyes of the people who bring loved but damaged toys to me and at the end it is fixed. These glimes in the eyes is more worth then any money.

      There are still a few master craftsmen about. Sadly they are getting fewer and fewer as the years go by.
      We really need, as a society, to preserve these skills before it is to late.

    • @mikeunum
      @mikeunum 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@petert3355 You don/t know how right you are. Here in the Netherlands we have a lot of old windmills. The society work as a miller is based on free time. The last years we get less and less young people how will learn that work. A government initiative has started some years ago and all privtae clubs around our windmills working together in this. Step by step some younger folks came by and started to learn. Also girls are in in this work involved and they love it. We are very proud of our windmills it is a tradition. They work as waterpumps to fill land parts before the winter and regulate the water stand in the summer, others do grind grain, some others sawing wood. All of them have generators to power light and other needed things.
      It has nothing to do with the wagon work but it is also an very old craftmen ship.

    Hi Mr. Dave! My thought was that the owner would be downright HAPPY with his cutter!! I'm hoping they have a nicely refurbished and well padded seat to put on. They may get some use out it this winter if they don't dally :-) Very enjoyable video!! Thanks!!

    Great work. Most people don't realize the amount of work to precisely "scab" a new piece into old construction. You might consider getting a good Japanese hand saw. For years I used a hacksaw for inletting until I was gifted a Japanese hand saw. You'll be happy with one.

      A good 11 pt. Crosscut panel saw that was sharp would also work.
