- Cutter sleighs have tall, narrow runners designed to cut through deep snow, hence the name "cutter". There are many varieties of cutters and there are many variations of bends in their runner styles. This cutter sleigh needs new main runners bent along with new step rails. The main body frames are in good condition so I will be bending the main runners and the step rails.

The thing that impressed me the most, was that he SHOWED us his mistake. A person with less integrity would have simply edited that part out, and showed us the corrected. the perfected process only. Proof positive Mr. Engels is a man of honorable intentions and should be admired for his honesty.

You know it’s amazing what a bit of steam can do! Bend wood or clean 13 years of grime off a steering wheel! Bet you can guess how I spent my day, LOL! McCullough hand held steamer blasts through the grime! Would probably be handy in situations where you need to add a bit of extra heat/steam while working on wagons! Can’t wait till I get to pulling seats and cleaning carpet! Poor truck has seen a lot of miles and not a lot of love!

Back in the 1950s in my village in the UK there was a blacksmith/wheelwright. We small children were allowed to sit and watch and I guess we looked like sparrows on a fence. Your videos remind me so much about that time. Thank you.

Been watching a lot of old Westerns lately! Every time I see a wagon wheel I think of Dave and how he would make/repair it when it breaks for no apparent reason in the western equivalent of a high speed chase!
My Grandfather told me this when I was ten or so in the early '70s. After I had pestered him about something I wanted to do for like 5 days straight and quoted that squeaky wheel bit a few times, He said to me that while true the squeaky wheel does get the grease, that I should be very careful in life because sometimes the "squeaky wheel" just gets replaced. I think he was a bit more than annoyed with my little smart butt but I learned a bit more patients that summer after what he told me sunk in. He passed away in 92... I miss him...
My dad told me a lot that "Don't let your bullfrog mouth get your jaybird back end in trouble".
It’s amazing how it sometimes takes years for us to realize how smart and full of wisdom our parents and grandparents are or were.
My Dad (also a Cyrus) will be 89 this August and while he may not remember a lot of things he told me or showed me back when I was a smart assed kid in the 70’s and 80’s, I sure do.
He is the reason I am able to do most of what I can do today and not have to hire someone to do everything for you.
As Red Green said. “You got to be handsome or handy.” The scars on my knuckles tell my story.

First thing came to mind was the old vaudeville gag I saw on TV from the 60s of a guy keeping a bunch of spinning plates balanced on sticks
Better to have it and not need it than to not have it and need it. A fellow I worked with several years ago had a cartoon drawing on the wall in his office. It was of a bird with a frog in it's mouth, but bird had a problem the frog had it's hand around the neck of the bird. The caption at the bottom said "Don't EVER give up".

Thanks for the video Dave. Back in the 80's I made my daughter a sled with steam bent ash runners. Steamed the runners in a rain down spout tied to a tea kettle on the stove in my apartment. Couple of years ago I steamed ash strips for a doll chair for my grand daughter. I ripped the wood to 1/4 inch strips, steamed them and clamped them til they dried. Then I glued and clamped them over the form. On my round tuit list I would like to build a 3/4 or 1/2 scale sleigh for a lawn ornament. Thanks again for your efforts.
Mr Engels, firstly can i say your videos are a breath of fresh air, you know your trade inside out.....i gave up watching TV a while back, found your channel and watch you hard at work most evenings.....i can empathise with you as i work in a small engineering shop in a rural area so you can imagine the type of work we get. When one of these jobs comes along that is.....testing, i do say to myself, how would Dave Engels tackle this one.....it certainly works for me.

As a kid in the 50's in Duncannon, PA., I grew up just down the road from a sled factory that made snow sleds for individuals. Times have changed. Today, kids carry their phones in the Winter Time. Back then, kids carried their sleds up the hill and rode it down. Repeat. The clothes back then sucked! You got cold & wet. The clothes today keep you dry & warm, but most kids do not wear these clothes outdoors. Allergic to the outdoors, I guess!

I have a very long list of mistakes. One was not wearing ear protection on the noisy farm machinery I was operating in early years. And now I’m paying the price, hearing aids. Suggestion only. Love every video.

Someone told an old time employer that the squeaky wheel gets the grease. His reply was that it's can also be the one that gets replaced.
There is always at least one thing, often more, in each of your videos that impresses me Dave. In this one, it was how you wrestled the main runners through the planer! Wasn't sure you were going to make it. In fact, I think I held my breath with the first one! LOL All the best to you and your lovely wife.
