I can agree with a lot of his tunes being nonsense lyrically (ie supersonic shakermaker some might say etc) but all of his tunes not being about anything is bullshit, he’s given meaning behind a lot of his tunes off definitely maybe, slide away, live forever, rock and roll star, married with children etc.

The Gallaghers seem to have a stoic relationship with pain and difficult emotions, and would rather seem like simple, womanizing hooligans than who they really are. I'm sure this has something to do with their father's abuse and subsequent abandonment. With all this in mind, it's not at all a leap to suggest that Noel lies to get away from admitting his love for other people, be it Melissa, Sara, his daughters and brothers. Watch any interview with him; he always seems to talk about them in a mocking fashion, or as with Melissa, outright lie. That's my two cents
I'm pretty sure I've seen an interview with both Liam and Noel in the room and Liam says he heard Noel playing an early version of it and asked "What were you singing there? So Sally can wait?" To which Noel replied something like "I wasn't but I like that" Who knows? When I was in a band in my teens and 20s I wrote loads of songs and when I look back at most of them I have no clue who they were about or what I was even talking about. Then again, it was the 90s.
I remember this version too. This is why I take most things Noel says (and Liam for that matter) with a pinch of salt, especially when it comes down to remembering things when they were mostly off their faces.
That’s a very sensitively crafted, kind and insightful speaking of truth mate. I think that you have addressed an injustice arising from lack of reciprocal kindness that may well have burdened and hurt a woman who, by her actions and attentiveness, appears to be quite a positive and nourishing character. Well done, you have done a very noble thing telling this story. I think it could have easily been done earlier, with a great deal of respect by the man that was enriched and improved by her positivity and care, but sadly people are complicated. Storytelling is powerful. Thank you for what you have done to correct a wrong.
Very insightful! In regards to that first clip & the literal name of Sally, I'd just add that Liam's girlfriend from 1988 to 1995 was named Sally & perhaps that's why he suggested it at the soundcheck.
A truly beautiful, fascinating, telling of a beautiful tale. That inspired one of the greatest pieces of art this country has ever produced. I hope they do a film biopic with this story included one day.
He seems to remember a lot of things from that period so I don't think he has forgotten everything about her, he does it because he prefers not to remember and it would not look good for his family that he's still attached to someone so strongly that led him to produce his finest work.
Noel writes about break ups a lot. I've been through some very hard stuff recently and its occurred to me, Noels writing about the things I relate with. Some are also about depression. Don't Go Away Up in the Sky (the line I heard you feel down, welcome to my world) Slide away Married with Children Wonderwall (Noel even said, Wonderwall is more 'the end of the night, my bird just left me') Cast no shadow (he walks along the open road of love and life, surviving if he can) I think, I hope, I know Stand By Me Listen up They'll be plenty more I missed out, but the key thing is Noel is quite clearly a very emotional person, he hides it maybe because its not very Rock N Roll. I think younger Noel was a depressed, heartbroken young man at a time. Especially around the '94-'96 era
The songs you refered in this video were already amazing but with all this detective work that put a meaning to them made it waaaaay better in my mind, I had no idea morning glory meant so much. This is amazing James.
@13:45 James, for a while I had a similar theory, but slightly tweaked; the songs/the album aren't dedicated to Melissa Lim as much as they are to what she represents to Noel, eg; *Respite from stress and dread, his own personal "oasis" if you will, and what that brief era in his life represents; the sweet spot of being a rockstar that many of my rockstar heroes wish they could 'go back' to and relish- the 'coming up' period where they were excited and exciting, they were hot shit but still had their freedom, vigor and innocence.
Thanks James! I guess anyone who looks up to Noel wants to know more about his songs.. but life gets in the way! You make sure people better understand his work and where he's coming from. Thanks a lot :) Keep at it!
you freaking did it. I've been listening to this song for the past month or so.. for some reason it really struck a spot with me.. Deep down i understood the song was about a break up, even with the jumbleness of the lyrics. ANd honestly it must suck for Ms. Melissa.. not only did you save the man's band and career by providing a brief moment of clarity, you influence the hell out of a great album.. only to have the main guy just sorta ignore you. When i was arrested in Austin Texas for Public intoxication.. i got out of the drunk tank the next day without a dime in my pocket, hung over like hell, and this was in the early years of cell phones, i didn't have one, but a buddy of mine did.. once i was out on the streets of the capital of Texas.. i headed towards corner store.. to use the pay phone.. but at that moment i remember i didn't have a penny on me.. and i saw a homeless man who was walking by.. and i asked him if i could borrow 50 cents to use the pay phone. He instead gave me 10$ dollars and said "i just saw you get out of the tank, buy yourself something to eat and call your love ones.. stay bless".. and i will never forget that moment. He didn't have to do that, and i promise ever since then when i see a homeless person i give whatever cash i have on me no hesitation. I will never forget that.
“What’s the story, morning glory?” IS a greeting I’d heard many times long before the Oasis album/song. The journalists Noel talked to must’ve lived under a rock.
Great video ! 20:10 it's impossible for Noel to not remember at least her name. If they phoned each other, he had his phone number with her name on it ! the "transatlantic calls" where she said the "morning glory" greeting, he must know her name for sure. Being on drugs or not, if he can remember his lyrics he can remeber her name.
I feel like Noel just likes to make his tales more exiciting by adding stuff like that, for example basically everithing he says about Tony McCarroll is a exageration, the Whisky meth show is not that bad.
You might not read this comment James, but that's ok 😊 This video is making me strongly consider joining the inner circle, the quality of content you produce for your channel on a consistent basis is incredible mate!!! I started watching you since the noel chord and have followed you on this journey and you've really inspired me to get into music and graft the guitar. Keep up the good work mate 🔥
Hi Edb3, would be great to have you in the Inner Circle mate. Thanks for your kind words 👍👍 More content to come, and I hope to be able to go full time with this in the next few years, so fingers crossed, when that can happen, even more!
After listening to the song after this video i think the whole chorus could be linked to her. When he says "she knows its too late as we're walking on by" that could be a reference to how she knows its too late for them to be in a relationship as noel has found someone else. And also when he says "don't look back in anger, i heard you say" could when referring to when she said that. Awesome video👍🏻
Also when he say "please dont put your life in the hands of a rock n roll band and throw it all away" sounds like something melissa would have said when he was living in her apartment but im not sure if thats reaching abit😀
I’ve just discovered your channel, loving it so far. This was a really insightful video. I’ve always known the Talk Tonight backstory, but never connected that ‘lost weekend’ to anything else from Morning Glory. Excellent detective work, and thank you for always sharing your sources. Everything is a lot more believable when you know if something came from a reliable source. I’m curious, do you think The Ballad of the Mighty I might be about her? That song has mystified me for years. It’s obvious to me that Noel still remembers her very clearly, yet doesn’t want to admit to it. He sounded like even he didn’t know what the lyrics to Mighty I were about, but I think we can agree that’s probably bullshit based on context like what you’ve provided here. Excellent work, really getting a lot from your videos.
I got hooked into this channel not because I was an Oasis fan (could scarcely care before), but because it's a fascinating thing to see such a talented, intelligent guy like James deify someone who in my opinion, haven't got half his soul.
Original lyrics were “So SORRY can wait…” Liam misheard it and asked Noel “Who’s Sally?” ‘Sally’ stuck and ‘sorry’ was lost. Interesting fit with the girlfriend break up theory - as saying sorry is always the hardest thing to do, and for Noel, it can wait cos she know’s it’s too late
I started watching your videos because you shredded all the music I grew up listening to and gave great overviews on playing it filling in gaps I’ve had on the guitar for years. When this video came up in the queue this morning I never ever expected you to fill in the gaps in my understanding of the music itself. My mind was blown today, terrific interpretation and story. Melissa’s story is one that deserves to be known given the massive influence of that time and music from Oasis. Somehow I had completely missed it until today. I hope I’ll be listening to WTSGL and MP late into my life and it will sound so much more rich because of this. Thank you James… and thank you Melissa.
Absolutely outstanding work James, Noel's a typical Gemini, there are two sides to them and you've just uncovered the side many hardly ever get to see. As for Melissa, what a classy lady, I hope she's having a great life

Morning glory (the album) is about San Francisco I suppose in many ways? The whole situation so much more complicated in my view. The public eye and industry is complicated and he definitely feels he can’t tell the truth of the matter. If he still cared he wouldn’t want to bring her into that world anyways. She definitely got him back together and whatever she did is probably still keeping him together. Remember, he was the one who wanted to leave the band. She was the one who wanted him to go back to the band and she knew it would mean they wouldn’t be able to be together.
Great vid again mate. Obviously we'd all like to hear it from the horse's mouth, but since that is unlikely and probably, as you more than hint at, impossible, all your conclusions make total sense. Nice one. (There's those bloody 3 thumbs down again! Who could they be?? Hmmm)
Half the world away was written the same time as talk tonight, so that could also have some meaning about all that time with Melissa. …… “You’re half the world away” Don’t look back in anger and talk tonight are also related to her like you mentioned. It’s good to be free was also written then, “ head like a rock spinning round and round found it in a hole sitting upside down “ he wasn’t in a good head space at that time and also he mentions wanting to live by the sea which could be San Francisco.
Good stuff mate .. I'm an 'oasis nerd" myself ..so found this interesting Glad u put all the time in an done all this homework an got it all here for us to just get in one play 🎵 I guess it's a very emotional song ..which he put a bit of everything in ..one of the best .. so good to hear a bit about it Sounds like s nice lass He shud send her a a few quid To help her look back 🥃🤣
Once again a great vid James but I honestly think Lim is exaggerating telling Noel the look back in anger bit considering Noel was a big Bowie fan (who actually wrote Look Back In Anger). He says some lyrics were written years before so I always assumed this song was about Louise Jones (the girl he wrote Slide Away & Married With Children about).
Love the video! Always thought that it was about a girl too, but there’s another girl Noel mentions in the documentary, a girl he breaks up with after they secure their record deal with creation; he said something like “we knew then that we were over after that” so could it be him saying to her not to look back in anger as he goes off without her?
great topics as always your intonation, and serious dramaturgy all in all in add an emotive touch that comes in handy with your sincerity ad loc. thank you
Noel said, admitted that he'd been working on DLBIA when Liam asked, "Are you singing So Sally can wait...?" Noel said, "No." And Liam said, "Well ya should do!" And that is where that came from.
Wow. I was kind of doubtful from the title, but wow. I think this is an amazing analysis. I saw the D'ya know what I mean video as well, and I genuinely think that it's sometimes a case of where an artist will say "there's no meaning behind it"... But there really is. Noel himself says that he "doesn't know where the songs come from, I'm just fishing and when I catch something I reel it in". While he may not be sitting there thinking "I'll write a song about X time in my life" - it's the source that he is unaware of.
This video was amazing, thanks for doing it, man. So good to share stories and experiences of our love for Oasis. Fun fact: ¨Bye bye birdie¨is Rachel Green´s favorite movie according to Chandler hahaha
Hi James, loved your work since the first time I heard you on the Oasis podcast. Keep it up. Interesting you followed this video after the one about Noel’s dark side and how he has never acknowledged the help from the Real People in helping Oasis. His treatment of Melissa fits into this pattern as well. He seems to be unwilling or uncomfortable to admit that he ever needs musical or emotional support. Mark Coyle’s comments are spot on. He only opens up a sliver for a moment. Kinda sad he’s let that fear run his life. On a totally different note, I’m US based and want to support you and the Oasis pod but would get killed with transaction fees if I arranged monthly subscriptions. Any chance for one time contributing to minimize my fees. Thanks!

Incredible video! At first, when I saw the title I thought this is ridiculous... However, this is pretty strong- you could make a film about this what an incredible story.
I think he has consciously obscured the meaning behind the "Sally" because he may not have wanted his new partner feeling like he still had a memories of a lady he had a brief relationship with in the past.

I agree. Lyrics are easily interpreted personally.
He barely has a song with a definitive story. It's just good combos of words.
Fully agreed
I can agree with a lot of his tunes being nonsense lyrically (ie supersonic shakermaker some might say etc) but all of his tunes not being about anything is bullshit, he’s given meaning behind a lot of his tunes off definitely maybe, slide away, live forever, rock and roll star, married with children etc.
@@evanphillips570 so you're saying "a lot of his tunes are nonsense (lyrically)" while at the same time saying "some of his tunes are about something".
I think that's pretty much what I said.
Melissa seems like a wonderful person. Noel was really fortunate that she was available in his time of need.
I know this story, I know all the details, but I never truly understood the colossal impact until you just put it all into context!!
“If ur leavin will u take me with u, I’m tired of talkin on my phone” makes sense now. Knowing Noel wrote stand by me around that time as well
"There is one thing I can never give you, My heart will never be your home" right after that line.
That's my two cents
very true. I love that.
Yes it's the culture and his upbringing
I'm pretty sure I've seen an interview with both Liam and Noel in the room and Liam says he heard Noel playing an early version of it and asked "What were you singing there? So Sally can wait?" To which Noel replied something like "I wasn't but I like that"
Who knows? When I was in a band in my teens and 20s I wrote loads of songs and when I look back at most of them I have no clue who they were about or what I was even talking about.
Then again, it was the 90s.
Yep, the story I knew is kinda like that.
Liam: what are you singing? Sally can wait?
Noel: no
Liam: but you should!
I remember this version too. This is why I take most things Noel says (and Liam for that matter) with a pinch of salt, especially when it comes down to remembering things when they were mostly off their faces.
@@phquiste3504 Same here. That's the story I remember. I think there is even a video where Liam tells the story.
This video does really change your perspective on that period of oasis, era defining
Dude you are an absolute detective - this is genuinely such a brilliant video!
Glad you enjoyed it
Great video James!! Also if you take Melissa’s last two syllable of Melissa and put them backwards you get sally
I’m a huge fan of oasis and I really love your context! Keep making producing stuff like this, you just earned a sub.
Thank! Welcome aboard!
In regards to that first clip & the literal name of Sally, I'd just add that Liam's girlfriend from 1988 to 1995 was named Sally & perhaps that's why he suggested it at the soundcheck.
source for this?
A truly beautiful, fascinating, telling of a beautiful tale. That inspired one of the greatest pieces of art this country has ever produced. I hope they do a film biopic with this story included one day.
Wow James. I don't know how you find these tiny details but I'm addicted to your oasis videos. Well played sir.
I always liked the Sally Cinnamon connection theory because of the big Roses influence on the band....
He seems to remember a lot of things from that period so I don't think he has forgotten everything about her, he does it because he prefers not to remember and it would not look good for his family that he's still attached to someone so strongly that led him to produce his finest work.
Superb video. I knew there had to be more to the story about that girl.
Thanks.
I knew about her being the Talk Tonight girl, but not the rest. Now I wanna listen to the album again and imagine this
Noel writes about break ups a lot. I've been through some very hard stuff recently and its occurred to me, Noels writing about the things I relate with. Some are also about depression.
Don't Go Away
Up in the Sky (the line I heard you feel down, welcome to my world)
Slide away
Married with Children
Wonderwall (Noel even said, Wonderwall is more 'the end of the night, my bird just left me')
Cast no shadow (he walks along the open road of love and life, surviving if he can)
I think, I hope, I know
Stand By Me
Listen up
They'll be plenty more I missed out, but the key thing is Noel is quite clearly a very emotional person, he hides it maybe because its not very Rock N Roll.
Wow!! Amazing content. Lucky Melissa! Respect to her.
Great video James!!! Do u think u could do a rebuild for The Importance Of Being Idle?
you freaking did it.
Really cool video. I think you are spot on with this.
“What’s the story, morning glory?” IS a greeting I’d heard many times long before the Oasis album/song. The journalists Noel talked to must’ve lived under a rock.
Fantastic work, great research and presentation! 🔥
I never expected you to go into such detail, this was great! Nice one
Brilliant James!
Cheers man!
As a huge Oasis fan, this is one of the most interesting and accurate videos I've ever watched. Thanks for your precious work, keep it up💪
Great video !
Another fascinating video James, Thanks!
can't stop thinking about this video holy shit
Hahahaha glad you enjoyed it mate
@@JamesHargreavesGuitar it's almost 9 o'clock and I still can't get over it what an incredible story
You might not read this comment James, but that's ok 😊
This video is making me strongly consider joining the inner circle, the quality of content you produce for your channel on a consistent basis is incredible mate!!! I started watching you since the noel chord and have followed you on this journey and you've really inspired me to get into music and graft the guitar.
Keep up the good work mate 🔥
Hi Edb3, would be great to have you in the Inner Circle mate.
Thanks for your kind words 👍👍
More content to come, and I hope to be able to go full time with this in the next few years, so fingers crossed, when that can happen, even more!
@@eddiebcfc1140 what he said to her more likely
Imagine being there for the first time, unaware of the song that it was
Blimey - this is excellent! Incredibly well researched! I thought I knew it all with Oasis but clearly not hahah. Well done mate!
I got hooked into this channel not because I was an Oasis fan (could scarcely care before), but because it's a fascinating thing to see such a talented, intelligent guy like James deify someone who in my opinion, haven't got half his soul.
Thanks to James I am warming up to Noel ever so slightly though. Not so much the bratty brother.
Hopefully they come together again. If not this life the next
As for Melissa, what a classy lady, I hope she's having a great life
Another amazing video by yourself James! I’ve just joined the inner circle today. Can’t wait to see how your rockfeild experience goes! All the best of luck. Done amazing with this channel so far and you have my full support!
Thanks so much Curtis and welcome! You can find us on FB too - go find the group and request to join and I can add you (if you want to 👍👍)
James Hargreaves Guitar I seen when I joined the inner circle You had that offer up. I don’t have Facebook no more as not much of a social media person as I find life better without it. But if I do get Facebook again in the future I will 100% join! I really appreciate the offer however James!

You're very welcome, and thanks so much for your support
👍👍🎸🎸🍻🍻
Great video and insight. You have some really great points here and you may be right.
I’ve been an oasis fan for years and never knew this well done honestly! How do you find these sources?
Every week you just come out with these amazing videos and stories - excellent video as always.
Good stuff mate .. I'm an 'oasis nerd" myself ..so found this interesting
Glad u put all the time in an done all this homework an got it all here for us to just get in one play 🎵
I guess it's a very emotional song ..which he put a bit of everything in ..one of the best ..
so good to hear a bit about it
Sounds like s nice lass
He shud send her a a few quid
To help her look back 🥃🤣
Your video's are truly magical James.
Man I never thought of Morning Glory that way.
Love the video! Always thought that it was about a girl too, but there’s another girl Noel mentions in the documentary, a girl he breaks up with after they secure their record deal with creation; he said something like “we knew then that we were over after that” so could it be him saying to her not to look back in anger as he goes off without her?
You are a genius. I knew some parts of the story but now it all makes sense. Keep it up!
Some might say that San Francisco is - Half the World Away - from Manchester…
great topics as always your intonation, and serious dramaturgy all in all in add an emotive touch that comes in handy with your sincerity ad loc. thank you
Not sure when it was written but in hey now when he sings 'there's no time for running away now' could be about this
Brilliant! loved this one mate
Great videos. This is one is packed with great information, fair play
Originally the chorus was so Jim'll fix it, liam said to noel where you singing Sally can wait? Noel said no, liam replied well you should!!
Noel said, admitted that he'd been working on DLBIA when Liam asked, "Are you singing So Sally can wait...?" Noel said, "No." And Liam said, "Well ya should do!" And that is where that came from.
It was actually Richard Ashcroft
This video is just amazing
What a great video! Thanks James!
I really love your videos about this "case". Amazing time watching this and The Masterplan Conspiracy
Cool story.. i had no idea. Hey I remember a nob hill off one of the 🐐 games being Driver from 99. Survival was good craic
I always just assumed it was a reference to the Beatles cover of Long Tall Sally.
He was probably singing "So Missy can wait" when Liam walked on by....
Wow this video should have 10 million views
This video was amazing, thanks for doing it, man. So good to share stories and experiences of our love for Oasis.
Fun fact: ¨Bye bye birdie¨is Rachel Green´s favorite movie according to Chandler hahaha
What?? It's "weekend at bernie's!"
@@ed209onthestairs Hahahahaha you are right!
Thanks!
Hi Susan - thanks for watching and for your request for a way to chip in - if you're going to get walloped with fees then honestly, don't worry about it :) If you're tuning in and watching that's more than enough, thanks for your support 😁
Great insight and video man. 👌
Brilliant documentary mate.
You know what they say, behind every great man..... ;-) She sounds like a great person, not to have become bitter, or to have sought more media attention. Noel missed a catch there
Melissa Lim: thank you!
Nice job James. Really interesting. Keep up the great work. I really appreciate all the effort you put into your content.
Damn son you made me a Gallagher nerd in binging your channel so fast
Incredible video! At first, when I saw the title I thought this is ridiculous... However, this is pretty strong- you could make a film about this what an incredible story.
I think he has consciously obscured the meaning behind the "Sally" because he may not have wanted his new partner feeling like he still had a memories of a lady he had a brief relationship with in the past.
I wonder if he ever sent her a few shillings???? (I would have!!!) She is/was REALLY BEAUTIFUL! xx SF
Really great video Amazing you really did some deep digging James ❤️
excellent video mate! proper great detective work🙌
Glad you enjoyed it!
