OASIS & The Hidden History Of Definitely Maybe

  • Definitely Maybe is an album that seems to tell a story. And songwriter Noel Gallagher has confirmed in many interviews that this is the case... so what's the story?
Many images and videos in my TH-cam content have been found online without any attribution or credit available. In many cases I have therefore not been able to add a credit in the videos themselves due to lack of information. If your image or video has been used and a credit is required, please email me with your details and evidence of authorship and a credit will be added into the video description.
    Many thanks, JH.

Even in the verses of live forever, it’s clear he’s talking about how he wants to escape boring Manchester. “Maybe, I don’t really wanna know, how your garden grows cos I just wanna fly” he doesn’t want to spend his life hearing his neighbours talk about their gardens and how they’ve planted new flowers, he wants to fly above with the rest of the rock stars. “Maybe did you ever feel the pain in the morning rain, as it soaks you to the bone” did you ever feel the pain of waking up in this depressing city where it is once again raining. Fairplay James, great vid.

I love these videos! They're probably my favourite that you do.
I've long thought of the first three as a trilogy, I didn't realise Noel had said the same. I'd also add in SOTSOG to make a quadrilogy(if that's a word?!).
That album and it's b-sides reek of the end of the affair. It feels and reads so much like the morning after, the waking up and looking around and the realisation that everything is falling apart and the people around you are fake and/or no longer friends/lovers.
Gas Panic(my family dont seem so familiar and my enemies all know my name)
Roll it over, (Look around at all the plastic people
    Who live without a care
Try to sit with me around my table
    But never bring a chair)
I can see a liar, (He sits upon a throne
    He lives a sleazy lie
But he's all alone again, again)
Where did it all go wrong, (do you keep the receipts for the friends that you buy)
Sunday morning call, (Because your thoughts and words won't last forever more
And I'm not sure if it'll ever, ever, ever work out right
If it'll ever, ever, ever work out right
Will it ever, ever, ever work out right?)
Put your money where your mouth is, (the bets are going down for judgement day so put your money where your mouth is)
Let's all make believe, (lets all make believe that we're still friends and we like each other)
cigarettes in hell, (I don't mind not being immortal cause it aint all that as far as i can tell....From the man who wrote live forever!)
One way road (If I know where I'm going, I don't know from where I came - that sounds like the guy he's singing to in d'you wanna be a spaceman)
I mean the titles alone are quite pointed and certainly in stark contrast to a lot of Oasis song themes to that point.
Admittedly Go let it out doesn't really fit in with this theme, nor does little james but that was written by Liam. Who feels love does if it was put at the end as a kind of coda...as a finding himself again song.
(I’m leaving all that I see
Now all my emotions fill the air I breathe
Now you understand that this is not the promised land
    They spoke of
    There’s nothing more to be
If you can be the remedy who heals love)

If you think about it some more, you'll see just how well opening up with Go Let It Out works as an introduction to the happy, angsty high before the comedown. It's then followed by a mellow, positive, psychedelic trance. A nice message, but for the benefit of being traditional.
Yes, Little James (a well done instrumental, if you ask me, with simple childlike vibes), is a bit odd, but it's brilliantly placed right after an angry brawl tune, but right before an extremely dark, anxious withdrawal tune. Like a calm in the eye of the storm. Finally, things start piecing together for him, starting with the aftermath being in Where did it all go wrong, followed by Sunday Morning Call... Then another angry wake up pointer tune at the height of realization of the Lies and the Liars(I believe it's either his alter ego personified, or it's targeted towards the soul suckers he's withdrawn from in his life). Lastly is a piece of calm, but melancholy acceptance, and laying your cards out on the table, as in turning over a new leaf, starting another chapter, but never forgetting to keep the users and abusers in their place, and see right through their facade. And Roll it over his soul.
I love this album. I never appreciated it as a whole until this past year, while revisiting it and discovering it as an adult who's experienced the feelings and scenarios portrayed in this concept record.

I appreciate your love for and in-depth reviews and explanations of Oasis' misic. Here's what I don't get; why on earth is it referred to as "Pop" music, instead of Alternative Rock? In my mind, Pop music is very uncool. I do not listen to Pop music, or at least, I try not to. I like most genres of Rock. Alternative preferred. Where I'm from(USA), the squares listen to mainstream Pop. It's just weird to always hear them referred to as Pop. 😒
Regardless, Oasis gets me, and I get Oasis. Without them, I would have been lost during my teen years. Now I'm an older Millennial, and been obsessively revisiting all their records. I have most of them. I'm currently fascinated by the excellent concept album of SOTSOG, and so I'm really trying to make it a goal to pick up the guitar again and finally give it another go- Go Let It Out is the one I want to try learning first, officially.
I'm thrilled my teenager plays guitar naturally.
BHN for me is the most nostalgic and D'You Know What I Mean? sums up my life; it is such an important piece of the puzzle, all in all.

I used to play in a rock band when i was 17-18-19 years old, and i am from a very small town (10.000 people). In Manchester they may not have the glamour of London, but jeez, at least they have clubs to play. Where I am from we had nothing! We literally had to improvise concerts on the beach or in some rural abandoned building in the countryside !!!!! And w never complained.
Of course I had to get the hell away from there in my 20s if I wanted to get a job, and so i did.

The crazy thing is that Noel most Definitely Maybe think of all of this consciously when composing this album. It seems that it would all line up with what was happening in his life at the time. His music has always been autobiographical, but accessible to the average listener, which is what made him the best songwriter in his generation. Rivers Cuomo from Weezer tended to write in the same way back in his glory days.

Is James talking himself into doing a rock opera The Who style based on Definitely Maybe and the b sides ?

I'd always seen the last three songs as being the "cost" of his lofty dreams and escape from his life at the time. It would cost him true love and connection with his girl. She could not or would not follow him down his newfound path in life.

While I don't think Noel wrote these songs in order for this specific story I think maybe when ordering the album he liked the story they made by being in this order and stuck with it

Definitely Maybe is a definitive classic Oasis album, it's not worth having an album collection without it in my view, and without this album, there would have been no Oasis, and these videos would never have been made.

Yeah but James has built a popular channel based around “detecting” hidden meanings in songs, he’s not going to stop now. I think some of it is serious, some theories he just makes up to create content.
