    Please note this video is not solely about Lily & Bean. They were used as an example to make a general point. The type of sentiment shared in the video I referenced is widespread about a lot of brands (especially the smaller, lesser known ones).
    I welcome all opinions on the matter & kindly ask that we keep it respectful as we interact in these comments.
    THANK YOU FOR WATCHING!!

    Yes, there is definitely a hierarchy of dupes. Brands like Aldo and Steve Madden are basically dupe houses but they still remain coveted. I once caught a sub on Twitter when one of the girls was calling out how cheap girls are for getting "cheap imitations" of certain designs and I happened to own one of the designs except I wasn't even aware that it was a dupe - I had just walked into a shop and saw something that I thought looked cute. Apparently it's ok if the dupe is by a mid range brand but the moment it is mass produced at an affordable price that is more accommodating of a wider market, suddenly it's an issue. For me it appears to come down to wanting to be exclusive and feeling like one is above others because "how dare you think you at my level when I parted with the equivalent of a down payment for a home to buy this bag" 😂. Like it seems like it's not enough that one has a luxury item, other people must not have anything that looks like it especially the people who are on a much lower budget.

      The height of snobbery. Yet they do Zara hauls and other "high street" brands and thats ok. I'm honestly tired of the gatekeeping when it comes to luxury.

      @@LEANINGINTOLUXE basically. If you feel that strongly about dupes the sentiment should apply across the board and not just to the brands you consider "less than"

    The world is always looking to classify what is wrong😂🤣 it’s almost like a “battle of the lesser evil” people are definitely more accepting of fast fashion dupes. It’s crazy

    Sis, just like you have said, there is actually a difference between dupes, replica and counterfeits. I have been guilty of mixing up my terminologies. Maybe a dedicated video to educating us about the differences may help😊

    I think with Michael Kors, people don’t don’t consider them dupes because of the brand’s history as a luxury house. He still has runway shows & of course ownership of major brands so like you said, the brand has earned goodwill and respect

    • @LEANINGINTOLUXE
      @LEANINGINTOLUXE  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      All this is true. but wouldn’t that also mean that we ought to hold the brand to higher standards and expect the same originality that we demand of smaller brands?

      ironically enough, the toile de jouy while known as the Dior print wasn’t actually originated by Dior. But Dior certainly raised it’s popularity in recent years. now this I should do a video about 🤔

    There’s definitely a hierarchy of dupes. And i am all for it. Think about it, different brands would loose out on their market if they didn’t draw inspiration from popular designs and release them under their brands. Also, keep in mind that it doesn’t only happen in fashion, it also happens in Technology, it happens in the Financial sector as well as various other sectors. Everybody is coping everyone’s original design, idea or concept. Lets all get along.

      Thank you for watching Dee. I'm curious though. You say you are for "the hierarchy" but you also say if brands didn't draw inspiration from popular designs (aka dupes) they would lose out on their market. so if you're for the hierarchy does that mean you are only ok with certain brands producing dupes but not others? isn't a dupe a dupe regardless of who makes it? Are they all not "unoriginal"?

  • @mpumimg6000
    @mpumimg6000 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    There's certainly a hierarchy unfortunately which I don't agree with. I mean even amongst the luxury brands themselves they inspire one another. They offer their take of the same kind of item, bags, ready to wear and so forth. Case in point 👉 how many luxury brands have Book totes now. No one accuses them of laziness.

      Exactly! just last month I did this video th-cam.com/video/l3gdZ5GqTlQ/w-d-xo.html and i share some popular luxury items from different brands that look alike. e.g. LV paseo slides & Fendigraphy slides or the Fendi mini sunshine tote & the Gucci mini tote.

    Thanks for this video! I’m curious what you think of Guess? Their dupes are so similar to the original (down to how they design and place their logo), that I find myself uncomfortable with them. But your video makes me reflect more.

    • @LEANINGINTOLUXE
      @LEANINGINTOLUXE  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think Guess falls in the same category as the likes of Aldo & Steve Madden. The brand has the name and reputation that many view as affordable luxury and not so much as dupes 🤷🏽‍♀️. I can understand your discomfort. Personally I don’t see anything wrong with what they do because while they may create inspired by items, you as a consumer know exactly what you are buying. There is no attempt to try to deceive you into thinking you are buying a LV or Gucci or whatever brand the item is inspired by the same way counterfeit/replica companies do.

    Speaking from outside the fashion world, I'd say this:
    Fast fashion is inherently more unethical than the fashion houses (supposedly). It's already known and accepted that they produce the designs that are most popular, so okay, whatever, buy from them if you can't afford the real thing.
    The term 'luxury brand', no matter which level of luxury, is associated with unique design and one-off pieces. People hold all brands that position themselves as luxury to a higher standard in terms of creating pieces that are unique to that brand.
    MK is established for their own pieces, so they can get a pass. In any case even the top and/or most popular brands poach from each other sometimes, but they can get away with it because you know 'but _____ still has their own look'.
    I make no claims of the morality on any side, I just walk into a shop and buy what I like and can afford lol, but that's my thoughts on how people work. Hilarious how touched people seem to get when you mention the topic and that they're going to bat for... who? Chanel? Dior? Come now...

    • @LEANINGINTOLUXE
      @LEANINGINTOLUXE  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I couldn’t agree more with your assessment. in fact I have said before that originality in fashion is a thing of the past. All the fashion houses are either recycling old trends or giving us their version of the same design. The entire theme of this video I did last month was exactly this th-cam.com/video/l3gdZ5GqTlQ/w-d-xo.html
