    Unless you've got a big solar and battery system set up on your farm, if you're going to be using this Ute for actual work in the outback, then the BYD PHEV makes sense. If this car is competitively priced with the Ford Ranger and Toyota HiLux... interesting times ahead!

      Not sure that’s true. Any house that’s on grid can have a 6.3kw charger installed which is *plenty* If you have 3-phase, which a fair number of farms do, you can get 22Kw which is better than many public destination chargers. Hybrid is just marketing, there’s a huge propaganda push by fossil fuels to spread FUD about EV’s and a lot of Aussies just believe it. It’s also just a new thing that’s not understood well.

    In Australia there's not chargers everywhere unfortunately. The PHEV is the logical choice at the moment, and probably will be for at least the next 3-5 years at the slow rate that chargers are being rolled out in Australia. And PHEVs aren't necessarily all of a piece. I don't know what configuration BYD are using but some PHEVs only use the engine to power the battery to give it supplemental range (eg BMW i3 REx), and don't engage the wheels. So in fact the engineering is not that much more complicated than either a HEV (in fact they're the same as a HEV, but with a bigger battery) or a BEV.

      Most of BYD's PHEVs (except their ultra-premium brand Yangwang, and maybe their new pick-ups) are series-parallel PHEV. The engine can (but not mandatory) directly drive the wheels at high speed (parallel mode), or switch to range-extender mode (series mode) at lower speeds.
      Most other Chinese PHEVs (including Yangwang and the new pick-ups) are series hybrid (range-extender only). The best-selling parallel PHEV ranked 15th of all PHEV sales in China (or, ~1/10 of BYD's best selling model), which is an insignificant portion of PHEVs in China.
      BYD's configuration is slightly more complicated (added a single-gear gearbox), but more efficient at speeds around 120km/h (speed limit of most highways in China) without compromising low-speed efficiency.

      Have to disagree. An internal combustion engine with fuel system, exhaust system, cooling system, induction system, emissions controls, vibration mounts, geez! It’s anything but simple. After 10-15 years these components start to leak oil and coolant, fail emissions, spark plugs wear out, etc. I have never been comfortable keeping an ICE car as primary transportation for more than about 10 years because they break down. Pure electric cars have none of these fail points and the battery will age gracefully not leaving you stranded like a broken plug coil or serpentine belt.
      I believe all modern PHEV designs do drive the wheels with the engine, so they are subject to all these issues plus a more complex transmission. I own a hybrid and I love it but when it gets to be 10 years old it will probably be gone.

    • @yggdrasil9039
      @yggdrasil9039 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@paulogden7417 I agree, but this is not so with hybrids. You are conflating pure ICE with the ICE in a HEV or PHEV. They may be the same engine but they are very very different use cases. Look at a video of the breakdown of a Prius that had done 200,000 miles / 300,000km. The engineer said the whole engine, pistons, rings etc etc was like brand new. That's because it's very rarely driving the wheels directly and the revs are very rarely above 4k rpm.
      My HEV is 20 years old. The ICE engine works fine, no leaks, and runs smooth as anything. The only thing I've had to replace is the HV traction battery, but that is getting cheaper every year. HEVs and PHEVs make perfect sense at the moment in Australia, because our fast charging network is virtually non-existent (one 50kW fast charger every 200km in many areas, and often broken.)
      I agree with you that BEVs are the ultimate destination, but until the charging network is fit for purpose (125kW chargers everywhere, multiple bays etc.) HEVs and PHEVs have a significant role to play in the interim.

    Other than wanting the bed to be a little longer - I think it looks fine. As far as which UTE - I'd probably go for the BYD because it isn't a repurposed diesel, and will probably be less expensive.

  • @reeceagland1980

    Looks decent for a Ute and Ute's sell well. Given that such buyers want towing power and worry about range means hybrid probably suit most initial buyers. But given Issues with BYD Hybrids I would be concerned. I'm not one for hybrids either but I'm not a ute buyer, you need to suit it to actual buyers.

    PHEV will do everything I need right now and my diesel is due for replacement. I'm excited for this, it will keep my daily commute emission free while still being useful as a workhorse, tow vehicle and offroader on weekends. I would rather pure ev but feels like we are a long way (5 to 10 years?) from one thats affordable and has the range towing, and load needed... Reliability is a worry I hadn't heard of BYD PHEV issues in china, they will need a solid warranty and good price to sell.

      100%. I really hope BYD can bring the price in to parity with the Ford Ranger and HiLux, or even beat them on price. The mistake GWM made was to bring in a cheap EV the Ora Cat then attempt to be greedy and over-charge for it. Now they've been punished for that, because everyone is buying the Dolphin and MG4, and GWM I notice is spending big on advertising to try to get attention back on the Ora Cat. They really bungled the introduction of the Ora Cat to Australia by disappointing on price. I hope BYD don't make the same mistake with this Ute.

    I agree full electric is the way to go but Sam you keep on spouting that hybrid and plugging hybrids are extremely complicated vehicles but they’re not. They’re really not that complicated. I’ve just done my EV training in South Australia and we’ve pulled a few of these gearboxes apart and the Toyota system is extremely uncomplicated. Doesn’t even have a gearbox. It only runs a reduction drive box And all the other vehicles are pretty much the same with a gearbox at the end of it. They are not that complicated.

    • @yggdrasil9039
      @yggdrasil9039 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yes this is Sam's often repeated BS point. I agree with him that BEVs are the ultimate end-point, but Sam seems to hate PHEVs more than he does Diesel! I guess it's the old BEV/PHEV rivalry, but that's short-sighted. PHEVs - and HEVs - are a fantastic way to reduce fuel reliance. I would be over the moon if BEV sales stayed the same but HEVs and PHEVs completely replaced diesel and pure ICE petrol.

    • @douglaswatt1582
      @douglaswatt1582 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I think you're missing the point. They have all the complexities of internal combustion engine drive trains, and then some. That's what makes them complicated compared to the Simplicity of electric vehicles. So they are actually much more complex than EVs. I think you're missing the forest for the trees here

    • @yggdrasil9039
      @yggdrasil9039 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@douglaswatt1582 I suppose you could argue that the Toyota hybrid system is complex because it has more moving parts. But that masks the actual running of the system, which is incredibly reliable, because of the way that the normal strains of driving that usually results in the wear and tear on an ICE are distributed throughout the system. This is why a Prius can drive 500,000km without any major problem arising.

      I have been wanting to go ev for a while now and I've been waiting over a year for the byd ute but 100k seems excessive. I was told by a byd dealership manager that it would be about 60k. He mentioned at 1200km range but he never mentioned it was a hybrid. From what I am hearing hybrids have less issues then pure evs more range. It's s good stop gap until better batteries are available and in 5 years time I think you will be lucky to sell an ev that has less the 500km range where a hybrid will be much easier to sell.

    "Rivian can make an EV with 700k range". Sure, but it costs a fortune because it has a 200 kilowatt hour battery pack and when you tow anything you'll half that range. Not to mention that what this vehicle will most likely be used for is taking the kids to school while carrying a one tonne battery. Give it a 30 kilowatt hour battery and a range extender, it'll still be able to take the kids to school with close to 100km ev range, it'll weigh half a ton less, it'll cost tens of thousand of dollars less and still be able to have huge range in the 5% of the time you want to drive that distance.

    Sam never explained the drive train other than to say it's a hybrid.
    No Sam, it is an extended range EV.
    The ute will Have a 1.5T engine and all it does is charge the main battery. This ute will have 500 kw of power, and will destroy a Raptor off the lights.
    And the best thing id that it has over 1000km range. There is no good ev ute in the market that can tow. This fills that gap.

    Just watched this video do I think full electric Ute's will work for Australian don't know, see we have rules that make an electric ute not viable it's weight that's a pity you see here in Australia weight is the thing that makes the difference between a vehicle a tradesman can use or just a toy (gvm) gross vehicle mass .
    Most Ute's weight approximately 2300 kg with a gvm of approximately 3200kg giving it a payload of 1000kg (ps there are so many things that can effect this )
    An electric vehicle is by its construction heavier if its gvm stays the same as combustion ute its payload is affected Government need to change (adapt) the rules first

    What are we we looking for in an EV UTE in Australia? A fit for purpose, Load carrying ute with range. The LDV T60 is very disappointing for the price point. The LDV Show room in Bendigo refuses to stock, supply ,sell or service any of the range as they say that putting in a service area for EV's is not financially viable. So I cant even test drive the actual EV variants they have! LOL MY Nissan Leaf is serviced by Hyundai as contracted to Nissan because they dont support EV servicing of the Nissans they sell on their own lot. I'm not put off and I'm very happy with my EV The Nissan Leaf was the only EV in 2020 that could accomadate Power to grid which is also a criteria for me as with Solar it does make a difference when you can store and diffuse battery as needed. I need something that can Tow a Caravan and accommodate me and 4 dogs. Im happy to loose 300 k of range to tow on a dual motor variant with 500 k listed range and I want to go off road on bush tracks. I have ordered Rivian utes for a laugh. Australia is not taking the Utility range of ev's seriously enough so will probably go for a Kia EV9 GT Line and have looked at the LDV Van in the highest spec. I think EV designers need to look at FIT FOR PUPOSE over whistles and bells for the Australian market and the government needs to be consistent with incentives. I have an ev but there was no incentive available at the time of purchase and now I want to up grade and there is no incentive even if its novated. Price point for EV's with range is in the luxury range so people are turning away from EV's. Pretty sick of prototypes and the Australian landed EVs missing half the promised specs. Happy to persist with the search but waiting years for development and then months for delivery is getting a bit old. :-)
