Shadow Work vs. Positive Focus

  • Shadow work is nothing more than the process of making the unconscious conscious and the unacceptable, acceptable. And the integration of unconsciousness leads to complete and total awareness. Even so, shadow work is popular with some spiritual teachers, psychologists and life coaches and very unpopular with others. Even channels and spiritual guides disagree on the subject of shadow work.
The top arguments against shadow work are “If you focus on your shadow all you will get is more shadow” and “If you focus on needing to clear yourself of your shadow, all there will be is more shadow to clear.” These arguments come from a very limited and elementary understanding of consciousness, resistance and The Law of Attraction. In this episode, Teal explains what shadow work is and also explains not only why it is important to do shadow work, but also why it is in alignment with the law of attraction.

    I FRIKKEN KNEW IT!
I FRIKN KNEW SOMETHING was up every time some one tells me,
"Focus on the positive...think positive thoughts...get rid of the negative, and focus on the positive.."
They always pisst me off when they tell me that!
    Why?
Because it didnt make sense to me. Something about their arbitrary commands did not befit me. I was always triggered and frustrated by their robotic shallowness.
I AM LEARNING about my shadow.
I DO wish to face her and love her and make amends w her!

+Kendra Justine I've listened to and read AH for many years, but have never felt that they encouraged anyone to ignore their shadow feelings or thoughts/beliefs. In fact from what I've heard, they've always said that the shadow is the flip side of the coin and to understand it allows one to see what it is that they want to create. In my experience with deep meditation and self inquiry over the years, I've seen that where we concentrate our focused attention, we become more and more aware of the qualities of that thing. It's called Samyama in Sanskrit, in the Yoga Sutras. To use self inquiry to discover core negative, self defeating beliefs is not in contradiction to the methods AH teach about raising one's vibration and creating what we want from the place of our bigger, broader desires. I'm sure much more could be said, but this is my humble input. I only respond because I've come across many responses on various videos about AH misleading them and them having to recover from it. I'm wondering if it's more of a deal where we are healing from our perceptions of the information we heard? I know that the less the belief in a self, separate from the Whole, arises within "my" Awareness, the less division I find between the teachings of AH, Byron Katie, Teal Swan, Tony Parsons, etc.

Bhuman Ishaya Hello, thanks for sharing your input. I agree with you completely. I was premature in my process when I posted that comment. I stopped listening for AH for months and just went about life. When I let go of trying so hard, everything began to fall in place. I now listen to AH daily, because the message is so true. I've realized that a lot of what AH says cannot be understood from outside the vortex. Now I see that I was outside of the vortex when I made this comment. The teachings of Abraham Hicks are truly authentic and I am blessed for them. All of these teachers have assisted me in my evolution. Love and light

Approximately 43 years ago I started looking for answers to the question "Why am I the way I am?" and the question "Why do I do the things I do?" and that put me on a path in life that had me doing a lot of shadow work. I didn't know I was doing shadow work though. I didn't know until watching this video. Now I know. Thank you for posting this video.

I'm totally purging right now. I've started shadow work since the beginning of this summer. It was easy at first, but that merely got rid of the lighter problems. The "lighter" shadows spoke to me. It was easy to surface them. But there were deep rooted sadness I could not explain. That "emptiness" that a lot of people have? That. It took me a while and it took a lot of courage, but I rammed straight into it in my meditation. I've been having "hangovers" for the past few weeks without even drinking alcohol and I literally threw up a few times. For me, opening "pandora's box" feels like hypothyroidism but it isn't. I -know- all my physical symptoms are merely reflecting what's about to leave. There were days where I let myself naturally sit and do nothing and say nothing and be easily triggered to cry. It looked a lot like depression. True strength shines when you let yourself knock down that brick wall you've built to look strong. Of course, I'd give myself "anti-spirituality" days to give myself a break. Shadow work is fucking exhausting. I'd bingewatch netflix and distract myself with other worldly things so I can surface and breathe after diving in for so long. And that's alright. It doesn't mean you're abandoning your process. It doesn't mean you're starting all over again. Once you've started shadow work, you'll plunge back into the darkness more often because something about the dark calls you into it. It could be through random inspiration or a reminder from a physical manifestation. Whatever it is, it pulls you back and tells you your break time is over. You'll throw tantrums and won't care who'll see it. You'll curse and wish ill upon the ideas of others. You'll hate your parents. You'll hate yourself. But all in all, you won't truly identify with these emotions anymore. Once you've found awareness, you'll "observe" these emotions moreso. Once you've found self-love, you'll be compassionate with whatever ugly feelings arise out of you. I'm in a really funky place right now with funky dreams and feelings of darkness that likes to show itself but not speak with words but give me massive migraines every time I approach it. The last few minutes of Teal's video synced in perfect timing to let me know "keep going, you're doing a great job".

    • @VenusVoice
      @VenusVoice 9 ปีที่แล้ว +35

Don't be afraid to toss and turn into every corner. Don't be afraid to scratch the shit out of that emotional itch. Get angry, get frustrated, get upset, get annoyed, get super bitchy. Ask a lot of "dumb" questions and don't force yourself to "turn the other cheek" when someone says something nasty to you. Let it all out because shadow work is very dirty but you will find yourself once you've cleared the grime. You're letting your soul to finally breathe after all these years. Inner peace should be natural, not forced.

Depending on your situation, level of commitment, etc., most of the videos Teal produces can be severely life-changing in the long term. It is so easy to overlook any given one, and you cannot always determine by the title what is contained in each one - or what it will do for you. I suppose in the end, you are led to your own salvation and will end up watching the ones you need to see.

But now that I faced it and dealt with it I am finally relaxed and I am past it. And what I learned was it wasn't a big deal and for next time (if there is a next time) I know to just deal with it and everything will be fine.

I agree with all of this. I am a true Abrahamster. Appreciate and love Jerry and Esther totally and completely. Listen to Abraham everyday. I had a traumatic event in 2018. A little over a year later I developed a kinda of mild version of PTSD. I was having flashbacks and becoming triggered. Very depressed, outbursts of pure rage. On certain occasions I would try to listen to and think better feeling thoughts and it would help in those small moments BUT I realized what was happening. I realized I had to do some deep deep shadow work. Because all I wanted was to feel good again I did not try to hide from my emotions, I didn’t try to distract myself, I would just start writing everything out. All the pain and hurts from childhood. I would speak it all out loud as well. I live alone so it was easy. Even the slightest little verbal hurt from anyone and everyone in my life. Changing this false beliefs I created in my childhood based on what someone else may have said. I would find songs that resonated with the hurts and sing them loudly and proudly, imagining certain people standing in front of me. I can’t imagine how I could possibly have created so many tears. Mine lasted about 9 months, then I was finally reborn to my true me. Oh, I always have more to do, it’s not all done but I think the very worst is over. The thick heavy cloud that had no been over my head all that time, is now gone. It broke apart and blew away just last August, 2020. I had it in the middle of a pandemic, so I wasn’t too focused on the pandemic. I’m not making light of the pandemic by any means!!
Once you realize you need to do it then try not to avoid it. I avoided a lot of it the majority of my life. It took that one major emotionally traumatic event to spur it all on so I could spew it all out. I believe in positive focus, but I also believe and know to be true that it is best to get deep down in it and get it out as best you can. You can find even more happiness. I will continue to work on myself for the rest of my life when needed. Peace and love to everyone! 🕊🌻🕊

I did positive focus on my 20’s and wow did I use it to justify and hide my fears. It really helped on one level. I felt great. But almost killed me on another. I was able to justify my addiction. And other things I didn’t want to see. I really pulled a number on myself. Past year I have been digging deep. My gawd it’s excruciating. @@prakashdesai534 You start by being honest with yourself and others about ugly truths. About what/who you truly feel, what you truly like or hate, and don't be held back by societal conditioning, like "I shouldn't feel this way about my mom/dad because....". It could be related to anything.
Find out what is not working in your life, where you feel most numb/unhappy, but not sure why. Or you self-sabotage, like you keep messing up a job even though you think you really want the job but deep down you really hate it.
You don't have to admit it to anyone first, but you have to start with admitting to yourself. Sometimes it's also most liberating when you tell someone you don't like them, and very often.... to let yourself feel weak, sad, and cry it all out...

I'm just trying to understand this shadow work stuff, but I have a question for you: Aren't the shadow parts of yourself the parts you've alienated? So, if you've been affected by rejection in the past then wouldn't the shadow side be the idea that you are worthy of being accepted? So the shadow isn't rejection, it's acceptance? I resonated with your two year old comment.

Deepak Chopra with Debbie Ford and Marianna Williamson have a book together named "The Shadow Effect: Illuminating the Hidden Power of Your True Self". It is an excellent book if you want to do shadow work and reveal to yourself your true-self. I'm currently reading it myself and am doing the work. It is liberating my friends. Everything Teal says is true. Working on the shadow does not bring more shadow, it does the exact opposite and it makes you whole and at peace with yourself.
Debbie says, "We worry that shining a light on this darkness will cause us to feel great shame or, even worse, to act out our worst nightmare. We become scared of what we will find if we look inside ourselves, so instead we bury our heads and refuse to face our shadow sides. But this book reveals a truth…that the opposite of what we fear we will experience is what actually occurs. Instead of shame, we feel compassion. Instead of embarrassment, we gain courage. Instead of limitation, we experience freedom. If left unopened, the shadow is a Pandora’s Box filled with secrets that we fear will destroy everything we love and care about. But if we open the box, we discover that what’s inside has the power to radically and positively alter our lives. Then we will step out of the illusion that our darkness will overtake us and instead we will see the world in a new light. The compassion we discover for ourselves will ignite our confidence and courage as we open our hearts to those around us. The power we unearth will help us tackle the fear that has been holding us back and will urge us to move powerfully toward our highest potential. Far from frightening, embracing the shadow allows us to be whole, to be real, to take back our power, to unleash our passion, and to realize our dreams."
It is also true that if you do not do the shadow work, your shadow will pop up in again and wreak havoc on your life. Debbie Ford says, "And although ignoring or repressing our dark side is the norm, the sobering truth is that running from the shadow only intensifies its power. Denying it only leads to more pain, suffering, regret, and resignation. If we fail to take responsibility and extract the wisdom that has been hidden beneath the surface of our conscious minds, the shadow will take charge, and instead of us being able to have control over it, the shadow winds up having control over us, triggering the shadow effect."
Namaste friends. Here's to healing the shadow! Peace and love

Yeah.. Only shadow work allowed me to heal. Then the next step for me is just to completely love myself and everything that enters my attention. It doesn't mean to like it, not at all. Likes and dislikes are a product of the mind, but consciousness loves. So you just acknowledge everything, admit it, being present with it, saying "I love you" to it.
That leads to complete integration I believe. You just go crazy with love, knowing that all is divine and all is one. Acknowledging all the feeling negative and positive, all the thoughts, being present with them. The tougher your life situation is the more you become present and loving towards yourself, instead of abandoning yourself.

The most effective way to bring light to the shadow is by applying a positive focus to the shadow work itself. Being open to what is, without resistance is being in a positive focus The whole concept of shadow vs. positive focus is just a projected metaphysical version of duality. Once the shadow work is cleared, wouldn't one naturally assume a positive focus. . .
And if that is the case, then couldn't the people that are judged to be "too positive" be individuals who have just cleared their shadow? Since, in the physical, we cannot truly know where a person is on their spiritual journey; any judgement that"another" is too positively focused, is really a projection of your own resistance to your own personal shadow work.

Teal this is one of the best videos you have done. The Hicks teach a vitally important lesson "Care about how you feel" which seems simple but it is a big problem for some people. But once you know how you feel and what you feel then there needs to be a next step. In some cases, the next step is just focusing on the positive. Like if I go outside and see my neighbor adding new garden trolls to her already junky yard, rather than get upset and go with that vibe, I would chose to notice that the baby blue jays are calling to me telling me how proud they are that they can fly now. But if my father calls me and tells me that he is thinking about buying a house for my sister who has no job and has sponged off of him her whole life, and I have a gut reaction to this, looking at blue jays will not do sh#$. Self soothing will not work. I need to address the feeling and figure out it's true name and where it started and tell that little girl who was me what really happened and that everything is ok. Then I come to realize that my father was a narcissist with a personality disorder who had a golden child and a scapegoat. Abraham teachings changed my life but saying not to revisit the past always felt wrong to me. Thanks, Teal.

I am just getting used to the integration with you speak of. It resonates so well. It doesn't make sense to ignore a crying baby, that being yourself. Good job. Bashar has an interesting take on shadow work. Basically he says that the personality construct (also called the physical mind or ego) is designed to perceive, not conceive (higher mind's job) and that the ego is incapable of "strategies". He recommends making a deal or contract with the ego so that the shadow doesn't feel left out. Also, Shinzen Young has a meditation technique called "turn towards" (the unwanted thought or image or talk) and yes, that feels counterintuitive but watch "Forbidden Planet" (the 50s movie) to see what happens to a repressed shadow. Nice take on Jerry, that takes guts (from my point of view). Calling humans on their bullshit in a loving way is quite the high-wire act that only the higher mind can balance and I am inspired by courage.

I would love to hear about our shadow work being part of healing our families hurts. I feel that is what I am also doing when I go through my own healings and then I receive a larger understanding of my families hurts.
    Thank you. Compassionate Spirit ♡♡♡

I think what we call aging and the decline in health of elderly people is actually just the festering wounds of these unhealed shadow aspects. I could be wrong, but it's just something to think about ; )

I believe you can live a very long time as long as you keep your spiritual quest alive. You literally just helped me break through babe cause the hicks teachings, which I strongly agree with- this just, I should say, you integrated these views so perfectly and so helpful. I seriously forgot about the shadow work and at first, was put off my other speakers because it seemed so dark, which is not my style. It's amazing when souls find eachother!!! I am so grateful for your authenticity and love 💗🐾💗

I'm so glad you said the things you said in this video out loud! I'm doing shadow work, too. I am awake, but 54 years old. I've got some work to do. I'm helped all along the way, though. Im student 24 years old and have been strugling with thoughts about my family. Should i try to make them aware of their actions(emotional manipulation). Both now and in my childhood. And i always thought that they would have been so defensive coz they are too old (52) and that they would have tried to resist everything , and it would only make things worst.
But your coment make it seem possible :)

What an absolute incredible soul Teal is.....she is one of the most amazing spiritual guides I have ever come to experience, her insights and compassionate way of sharing those insights, has reached my heart and soul on so many levels....and in providing the awareness of how shadow work actually works, she has taken all the fear away of any 'negative' experiences one might have, for she has provided the truth in regards to that 'negative' experience, she helps you realize, that the experience you are having, is there only for your integration...Teal provides the truth, the light, the way...reaching your heart, she guides you through the shadow deep within, and gives you the understanding that these shadows are there for integration, and for personal transcendence....

Thank you Teal. Once again (7:24), you explain very well what I was doing in my early age, at night: nightmares used to frighte me very strongly... until I decided to face the monsters that inhabited my nights. Once I did it a few time, I realized that it was me who was creating these monsters. So I started to play with them in a way that made them ridicule. Then they just desappeared for ever... I know understand what I had done these nights. Thank you for this light.

During this video I had the realization that I have a so called "helper's syndrome". Which means that I ignore my own shadows by focusing on other people's problems. What's even worse is that I go into relationships where I think that the woman needs my help. Then I help her and once she is healed enough and becomes more self-reliant, I distance myself from her (probably because she mirrors the opposite of my shadows) while she realizes how much of a burden I really am with all my own problems and leaves me. This is the only healthy thing for her to do. So here I am and what now? How do I integrate this shadow?

Spirituality 2.0 is exactly where I need to be. I've learned that I can be positive and I needed to know that. But, all through my life I've known the shadows are where my freedom lies. I learned the hard way integration is key & learned to pick parts of LOA that works. It was interesting to me that after 10 years of searching I came back to what I knew very early on:
    ying & yang.
I think that was why religion was never fulfilled me. Doing shadow work is so freeing!!!! Afterwards.

This is great! I've been hearing the Abraham Hicks lessons and I do feel that I used to be very negative and I'm finally more at peace, so It helped along other positive affirmations to gain control over my state of feeling and putting things in a new perspective but I keep getting flashbacks and resentment of my childhood first thing in the morning and I started feeling guilty for getting those flashbacks, as if I can create the same hell again and frankly I feel more empowered to continue, knowing I can observe them and release them.
