I live in a small town in Maine founded in the 18th century. I was able to go to the historical society online for my town and actually was amazed at the pics, maps of the streets and what was there. My own home is a victorian age home but i never knew alot of the buildings and areas until i did. Great advice!
Thank you Tony for this information. I'm completely new to metal detecting and your channel has already helped me immensely. I will for sure be tuning in again!
You need to read Karl Von Mueller's treasure manuals, #6 and/or #7. It'll coach you on research techniques. Read in between the lines cause there's life lessons all through the book. Very informative, and a must for successful treasure hunting!
This is an excellent video Tony, a very well done how-to! I’m saving this video! We do very similar stuff but didn’t know about the website that does all of that stuff for you! Thanks for making this one! I’m in process of making a similar video but also has the footage of me hiking out to some old cellar holes.
Great, informative video. Thank you for that.. Most of the older maps I've pulled up are not giving me the Historic Earth or Google Satellite options so I've had to choose a newer map but I'm not complaining. This is a valuable resource.
Good video. When you were talking about that dump site, I was thinking of where they might have put the dirt that was removed and used as fill dirt somewhere else.
Nice information. Thank you. It's amazing how few historic maps of our state of Colorado there are online. Search "Adams County" where I live and there's pretty much nothing. So weird. Yeah, I've been using Historic Aerials, but of course their timelines are limited. That said I've learned a lot of history about my neighborhood while researching for places to hunt. Another reason to love detecting! Keep up the good work. Best, Steve
Researching Colorado in general is difficult. I will be having more videos of other tools that I have found that benefit me in researching sites in Colorado. Stay tuned. Thanks for watching.
@@5280Adventures I found a handful of history books online written by a Thornton HS class back in the '70's Has some neat info about this area. "Forgotten History of Adams County". Has helped a little. No maps, but good info. (Btw, I grew up in Bowling Green, OH)
Thankyou very helpful! My only question is is how did you get the map base layer? There’s no spot to change it to google satellite. Thankyou in advance!
Thank You Tony, I was just wondering a few days ago on how to find really old places. What was there before and not today. Hopefully this should help my quest on finding some lost 1895 Gold coins. Thanks
I was just watching your video about maps, and then you said you grew up in Cuyahoga County. I started the first half of my life and Lyndhurst, and then grew up in collinwood
I just came across your channel after purchasing a Minelab detector. You have such great content. I went right to Historic Map Works and started doing research. Unlike in your video, there is no option under opacity to choose Map Base Layers. It's just blank. Any ideas? Thanks so much
Great information. Thank you. Does the historical overlay still work on historical map works? It does not come up for me to overlay on the map like it did on your video.
Hi very interesting and I am in BC so probably the same concept..Historic Map works? New to Metal Detecting but watching videos and every bit helps. Thanks Kirsten
I just took your information and tried to apply it. The overlay isn't working at this time. Hopefully, it will work in the future. I love the information you have provided.
Yeah some maps dont work if they have multiple maps on one. The interface doesnt know how to overlay it on the current maps. I hope you found some other maps that work well for you and help you out.
Amazing information! I am so stoked to check this site out! Question:.. Ok, so you have finished your research, picked a spot to check out, what is a good way to break the ice with the owner? And would you ask for permission differently now with covid happening. Thank you for any and all info:). Love your vids!!
Thank you Tony, very helpful. Question, have found old areas that just don't have the older homestead maps available? Is this information somewhere else? Like the library for this area? I have checked different map sites on Google. Not much luck. I will try this though. Thanks again.
It is hit or miss on some older areas. Those areas may not have been mapped very consistently which is the case that I have found. Sometimes research takes you to the library, county GIS websites, or scouring old books of the area. Sometimes that will help find a map that not many people know it exists.
Can you give any tips. On how to approach the current owner, to ask permission to hunt their property. I used to hunt with a Bounty Hunter RB5 in the 80's. Then it was customary to offer 15'/, of the value found.
When I approach land owners, I let them know that I will be taking all trash with me and am willing to show them all of my finds. I dont bring up giving them any finds that I uncover. If they discuss it, I usually tell them that they are entitled to the finds as it was found on their property. I rarely come across owners that want to keep anything that is found. I have though made some memory boxes of items that the owners really liked. That usually helps me get to come back and hunt more!
@@5280Adventures Thanks for the reply. I bought a Minelab Vanquish 540 Pro. And Pinpointer. I'd love to get some exercise and finds. Like to recover a bit of the investment. Keep swinging and pinging.
Great video, I have used that historic map page from time to time, it is a really good reference. Another place to check out old maps is at your county tax office.
This is awesome I will have to re watch it over and over again to figure out how easy it is to use..but my memory is not the best that is way I would have to watch it over and over again..Awesome tutorial
I tried to get Google Earth on the free historic map works page, but it does not appear. Do you have to purchase a premium level in order to get the Google earth access?

It should work for a map that only has one area on it. If it has multiple smaller maps on a larger map, it will not work. There is no work around for that on the website unfortunately.
Talk to the old timers in the areas you want to hunt. They are a plethora of knowledge. Also talked to Hunter's themselves deer hunters, bear hunters, small game hunters etc... As a deer and turkey hunter myself I have come across old cellar holes and chimneys that are not even on the map. Same holds true with local historians.
Having trouble with Mississippi. I live in enterprise ms. Would love that or meridian or quitman. All in Mississippi of course. Cant find anything. Help is appreciated
You don't need Google or the Computer at all. Just go to your local library and find an old history book for the county you want to search. Study, then outline the leads you find in the early history of the whole county. Then let's get into the township histories at the last part of the book. This is where the best leads come from, Taverns, ghost towns, camp meetings, political meetings and picnics! I get atlas maps of all the counties I search on eBay.
Just sneak in and trespass. I took my coil and controller completely off the pole. You put the controller inside your jack pocket and run the coil wire down your sleeve. Keep the coil in the outside jacket pocket where you can just take it and put it away quickly. Use a small 6 inch coil. If the cops come, take off running as fast as you can and hope he can't catch you. If he does catch you, immediately crap on yourself and he'll instantly decide it's not worth it.

It’s been here since the 1890’s is a large corner lot and was once the village grocery store, ice cream parlor & post office. Thanks again. Dave in Wyomissing PA.

Any land owned by a private person, whether there is a current structure on it or not, must have permission from that owner. Doesnt matter if they live on that property or not. You must always have permission pf the private land owner.
Any answers from my questions
My answer is always get permission from the land owner before you ever metal detect on private property.
