      A lot of people already have 3D printers at home, which means you could make OpenAstroTracker, buy a used canon DSLR body( even full frame ones for ~300$) and a cheap M42 lens( like pentacon 200mm F4 for 50$), all of that for half of the price of S22 ultra; and I promise you it will give much much better results.

    This kind of technology is a game changer for the average non photographer person like me. Yes I have a DSLR, but it’s not always with me like a phone. I can’t tell you how many awesome scenes I’ve seen while backpacking through other countries only to not be able to capture it with an iPhone or a simple compact camera. Hell, just to be able to take a quick photo of a moonrise without notice or perpetration. I’ll be interested to see what else you can do with this… been planning to switch from iPhone to Samsung for my next phone in the spring.

    I will consider getting the S23 Ultra, when they support full lens resolution on the main lens, for raw mode/astro mode. Just imagine the amount of detail we could capture, when the 10 Minute exposure astro photos came out in 108MP.

    • @techie0075

      You mean 200 MP, right?

    • @helgeschneider4417
      @helgeschneider4417 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Then the individual pixels would be to insensitive to light to take a decent picture, because they're so small. You can already see this if you compare nighttime street pictures with those of e.g. an iPhone 14. You'd have to increase your ISO to an ungodly amount and loose all the detail. Or you just wait a lot longer.
      And at that point you'd be better of buying a decent used DSLR with 24 MP and a cheap telephoto lens. You'd even pay a lot less. And would still have your phone for other occasions.

      From what I have gathered, the S23 Line up is something like this.
      - I have stayed on top of the twitter leaks for a while now so please fact check where you have scepticism in the replies.
      - there is a lot of information to digest below
      • Official Galaxy Unpacked is on February 1st 2023

      The s23 Ultra screen will be less curved
      The s23 and s23+ will have +200mAh bigger batteries
      ( display sizes remain unchanged )
      If there is truth to Ahmed Qwaidars tweet about there being no 128G version then this is a big win for smartphone consumers and hopefully over smartphone manufacturers will follow suit in not making a 128G version.
      I believe there will still be 128G storage options however for very few countries as Ahmed Qwaidar updates his tweet.

      • Specifications
      S23 Line up will receive an overclocked Snapdragon 8 Gen2 Chip ( No use of Samsung-manufactured Exynos Chips till 2025 )

      S-pen stylus enclosed inside the phone | 2.8ms lag response time
      1750 nits brightness (peak) | (not as bright as the Samsung-manufactured 2000+ nits iPhone 14 pro max's display)

      S23 line up will come with one Android 13 in the box | 4 years of one UI updates
      S23 line up will come with one UI 5.1 in the box | 5 years of one UI updates
      Colours for all three devices: (S23 , S23+ , S23 Ultra )
      These are the colours rumoured to be be releasing. They could be either of the set of colours below:
      -
      Set 1) • Botanic Green | Misty Lilac | Phantom Black | Cotton Flower
      Set 2) • Cream | Lavender | Green | Phantom Black
      -
      More exclusive colours to be released only via Samsung-Store
      the focus of the s23 line up is chipset performance, camera performance (hence the jump from 108mp on the s22 ultra camera to 200mp on the s23 ultra) and optimisation.
      Telephoto camera remains unchanged. Software updates will improve the colour science and quality overtime.

      Trust me, you DO NOT WANT the quad-bayer issues translating over for astrophotography. Quad-bayer is already the bane of a smartphone's existence, its benefits boil down to "large file with 0 added detail lmao" while the problems have a whole list. Worse color accuracy and light sensitivity being among them.

    Brent, your videos are absolutely phenomenal. I have an S22 Ultra, and the astro photos that are taken using both Pro Mode and Expert Raw are just unimaginably clear, especially considering how small the sensor is. Add to that this new Astro Mode, and my photos have been on a whole new level. My question, though, is with the phone's processors. S22 Ultra was manufactured with two available options for processors, Exynos and Snapdragon. I've watched content on TH-cam comparing the two, and the difference was astonishing, especially in low light settings. I have the Snapdragon in mine. Do you know which sensor is in your S22?
    Thank you so much for all of your content, and I'm working on putting together a video now showcasing some of the shots that my phone has taken. The encouragement and education that your videos contain have been pivotal for me with both photography and content creation. I'm looking forward to your future releases, especially an update with the S22.

      Oooh, that's a really tough question to answer, especially since I know nothing about you or your budget situation, preferences, shooting needs, etc. Both the 1-4 and 800 combined are still way cheaper than the 1-5. If that's not an issue, then yes, IMO the 1-5 is hands down a better lens than both of those other 2. It's obviously not quite as versatile, given the other 2 combined give you a greater range, but at the cost of slower apertures, having to change lenses, and neither being weather-sealed.

    about astro, imo the only really useful lens is the "W", according to my tests. Also don't expect too much from the raws, the data captured is pretty limited.
    So, i guess it can be interesting maybe amazing, if you are in a dark skies place and want to do a milky way photo. Specially for people without other kind of equipment than a phone and a tripod, or maybe just the phone and somewhere to place it still or people with no skills in the matter.

    If the camera in astro mode states "hold the camera steady" and it can stack multiple shots successfully why can't it stack them perfectly without stretching the stars when the camera is on a tripod with no random movement?

    Good video, might I suggest using the S pen on the 22 Ultra for the shutter button? I know this is how I'm lining up my shots and taking the images without having to touch the camera or tripod. I have some really great shots of the moon and stars that I have taken on this camera without using this mode. I find that adjusting the exposure to the highest setting allows me to see where I have the shot lined up. I have been trying to capture a comet this past month, but getting it to show up clearly has been extremely difficult. If you have any suggestions on this I would greatly appreciate it.

    The 10x camera will probably do horrible. I have the S22 ultra and at night time the the 10x camera simply cannot gather enough light. The sensor is also not as good as the main sensor.

    • @geoffreytbh
      @geoffreytbh ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The thing about the moon is that it is reflected sunlight and very bright but the sky is black. So when the camera sensor looks at the scene, it tries to understand the light values and average to a neutral grey. So you will end up with a moon that is too bright. If you switch to manual mode and change the aperture and shutter speed for a sunny day, your moon will show up properly

      I haven't shot Nikon since the early 2000s with their film cameras, so unfortunately I couldn't say how the performance for those models is. It seems like the 7500 would be a decent upgrade from the 3100, but that's just a guess.

    Are you using an autoguider or another device to compensate for rotation and prevent star trailing? I have yet to have much luck taking night time sky pictures on my iPhone 13. I previously had a Samsung S9. I've tried both the stock camera app and aftermarket astrophotography apps. I usually try to either set the phone down on something or put it on a mini tripod to stabilize it.

    Why does my s22 Ultra come preloaded with Facebook and Meta services, but the expert raw camera app has to be downloaded seperately? Makes 0 sense except of course Meta and others are paying Samsung. I think this app should come standard or at least be an option when setting up the phone, lots of people will never even know if exists the way it's handled now.

    What is a good start tracker mount that's "reasonable"? I just subbed after finding this video. I am going back to Samsung with the s23 ultra

    • @BrentHall
      @BrentHall  ปีที่แล้ว

      The only star tracker I have any experience with is this one:
      amzn.to/3JGAjlt
      Though I couldn't say if that's a reasonable price for you or not. It might be considered a bit overkill for a phone, but it definitely works for it. There might be some smaller ones out there, but this is the only one I've used.
      Actually, now that I think of it, the Miops Capsule 360 that I use for timelapses, has a built-in star tracker mode in their app. I don't think I tried it, but I remember seeing it. It's not a real or dedicated star tracker, and I think it's about the same price, but it's way smaller and lighter and easier to set up. There may be other devices out there with similar features, but I don't know of any off-hand.

    • @polie67
      @polie67 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Brent Hall thank you very much for the info! I just got my s23 ultra in today early! I'm going out tonight to try and take some pics following your guide. The last time I did astrophotography was back in 2005-2006 at the south pole doing time-lapse pointing straight up. We took some awesome pics! Unfortunately in 2009 my apartment burned down and I lost all my camera, hard drives, and laptops with the photos. I didn't have very much backed up in cloud storage Unfortunately. I really want to get back into photography, albeit just amateur stuff on my end...
      Oh and that was the exact tracker I was looking at! Also do you know of a tracker and/or telescope that can track rocket launch? We can see SpaceX and NASA launch from our front yard and it would be awesome to be able to watch them and photograph them all the way into space.
