    “Once you are over the initial amazement that it can do it at all, you are forced to conclude that it doesn’t do it very well” applies to shooting astro with cell phones as much as cows running steeplechase races.

    Glad to see a new S24 Ultra video.
    I haven't done any astro with my S24U yet, but yeah, sadly ExpertRAW does some weird extra processing, which it didn't do on the S23 Ultra.
    What I noticed from your screen recordings:
    you might want to try the 50MP mode and also use manual focus.
    If I recall correctly the sharpest results were somewhere between 0.8 and 0.9 on the focus scale.
    I just played around to find what gave me the sharpest results.
    Also, 20 seconds and 800 ISO gave me the best results.
    But that was all on the S23U, so not sure how well that translates to the S24U.
    Maybe give that a shot, might help a bit 😅

      @@baochinhnguyen3221 Sadly don't have the S23U anymore to compare myself, but technically it's the same 200MP sensor in both phones, the only difference would be processing

    samsung is smoking high stuff for processing the RAW mode too😂, you are the only one I have seen so far who have pointed this sketchy behaviour of Samsung ruining tte manual mode.

    I'm 2 months late but i hope you see this comment as it might help.. Samsung s24 ultra dngs are linear dngs.. meaning there is linear processing applied on it but since its linear there is no data loss.. apparently adobe denoiser doesnt support linear dngs so try to convert it to a regular dng first since all the data is there..

    as someone just not finally starting to get in to this as a hobby, think my plan is to play with taking astrophotos on the s24, get a feel for actually shooting things, messing around with editing and everything before biting the bullet and moving to an actual camera

    • @BrentHall
      @BrentHall  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      That's a perfect plan! The pro mode on these phones really allow you to start understanding the exposure triangle and get a good feel for what can be done. And definitely don't forget to learn some solid editing techniques! That's just as important these days, and the apps are so powerful now.

  • @vladvetrov7872
    @vladvetrov7872 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +11

    I've read that the post-processing it does automatically even on the raw and pro is a bug that will be fixed in the next soft update in August. Also, even though it says that it only affects photo mode, setting intelligent optimization in the settings to minimum does noticeably decrease the post-processing when using the 12mp cam, even in pro mode (on 50 & 200 it doesn't help because the phone takes longer to take a photo, giving it more time to post-process).

    • @AliYassinToma

      they switched to linear dngs from regular dngs and adobe denoiser doesnt support that..

    Just "upgraded" to one of these and playing with it. I've done a little astro photography with a DSLR with no tracker stacking 100's of images. I can definitely get better images but this is a way to get others into this and a fairly easy manner and pretty amazing considering.
    The one thing that annoys me, which you mentioned in several of your videos, is that the raw DNG files are not standard format. Not being a professional I don't use any Adobe products but have about a half dozen of other software, both Windows and Linux. They all work fine with the DNG files my camera produces. None of these will even open these so called raw image files this phone produces. What a bummer.
    It is nice to be able to get a kind of reasonable image pretty fast and simple instead of spending hours stacking hundreds of images but for real quality you can't beat doing it the hard way. Kind of like having a preview.

    Thank you for the video. I am seeing much the same with my S24 Ultra. Excessively warm so I now set the white balance also to cool it down. The last update did fix the horrible banding problem in astrophotography mode and the raw file size has increased so looks to be different than a plain jpg in a dng wrapper. I am getting decent results in astrophotography mode now so glad about that - glass half full😊

    You should stack a hundred of RAW photos (or more) using Deep Sky Stacker (DSS). You may also need to take darks and flats in the field next time, to properly reduce noise, sensor imperfections, and vignetting.
    And a startracker mount like Nomad would help a lot.

    Ive watched a few of your videos, and they are really great.
    I havent got a very technical mind on cameras/phones but your videos help show me settings that work. So thank you.
    Just curious to see/know if there are any other apps that shoot in proper raw mode.
    Would these photos save in a similar file format and edit in a similar way compared to the inhouse stuff on the s24u and would that then allow the use of the de noiser you mentioned in the video?
    Do the stack i would also be curious to see the result.

    All that green in Expert Raw after you adjusted the white balance could be airglow, especially near the horizon. If Expert Raw is taking multiple exposures and stacking, as if you were using a tracker and stacking images, this makes the airglow far more pronounced.

    I wonder if Adobe isn't building in the file format profile for Samsung phones on purpose, it wouldn't surprise me that crApple and Adobe are hand in hand to promote the more "professional" or high end phone gear is a crApple phone, purposely making Samsung phone look crappier. Of course Samsung could simply have a propreitary DNG format that they're not providing a proper import filter into Adobe? With ON1 PhotoRAW 2024 Max I can't read my S23 Ultra RAW images, so it's likely just Samsung being annoying with their file formats and processing that they're not allowing RAW editing software to access and edit outside the phone.

    • @BrentHall
      @BrentHall  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Yeah, it's really weird, and seems to be getting weirder with the last couple of galaxy iterations. Samsung is definitely doing strange things to their dngs and I'm not stoked about it.
