  • Today is a very different type of video... I asked you whether or not you'd like to see me review another expensive full English breakfast and the majority of you said yes, so I decided to visit the Wolseley in London. However, I also decided to visit a cheaper place so that everyone is happy. A bit of a new format, please let me know what you thought of the video and the food!
Please don't forget to like and subscribe to the channel.
Which would would you prefer to go to? The Wolseley or the Little Portland Cafe?

The Wolseley is a great experience and all over very high quality, never had breakfast there, but had dinner there several times. Never been to the Portland cafe, but will pay them a visit as soon as possible to have a full English, been a while. Great concept and great reviews as always, Gary. Keep up the fabulous work you guys are doing. 😀

As a Brit in Texas I don’t miss a chance for a full English. One of the very best I have ever had was in the United Airlines lounge at Heathrow. I had time to burn so I went to the lounge with my pass and I was astonished to see everything for a full English laid out buffet style. You could have whatever you want and it was all fresh and piping hot.
Needless to say the next meal offered in flight was given a pass as I was stuffed!

Being a Midlands girl I can't justify the price at the hotel. Obviously the produce is great quality but £23 for an expensive sausage, black pudding and eggs is a lot. I thought the tea would be included 😅. At that price I would want to take one of the "condiments" home with me.

@jamesprice4647 You remind me of a visit to Venice with my mom about 5 years before she died. She'd had very little chance to travel outside the US and really wanted to enjoy it. There was a gelateria on St Mark's with tables set out in the plaza. We were urged by multiple people not to waste our money (as gelatto could be bought from the same shop for carry and eat MUCH more cheaply). But she wanted to sit and enjoy being where she was. We got an ice cream concoction that came on a silver tray, with multiple lavish dishes containing whipped cream (not the spray-can sort, but cream, whipped with sugar and vanilla), cherry sauce, chocolate sauce, and additional crumbled cookies to sprinkle over as we progressed through the really very impressive amount of completely delicious vanilla and cherry gelattos. I ordered a glass of prosecco, because vacation, and she had a bottle of sparkling water. Including the service charge, about which the waiter was very apologetic and concerned that we were aware, we spent around 40 euros. Best money I spent that trip. I can still see mom sitting there, smiling and listening (half understanding, because accent) to that wonderfully kind young waiter telling her about the history of the square, and eating her gelatto. I had to help her, and then my sister and niece came along to tell us how we could have spent less at the counter. We absolutely could have. But I have the memory of that hour in St Mark's when mom was happy and enjoying the big world, feeding cookie crumbs to the pigeons, and I would do it again every time.

The Wolseley ('ow much for a bacon roll??) would still be a good experience for the ambience and quality breakfast (maybe once). The Wolseley is a modern classic. Sometimes it’s difficult to imagine it hasn’t been there for 100 years. When I lived in London, it was a perfect place for a business breakfast meeting or a special lunch/dinner with loved ones and friends. You were rarely disappointed. I remember coming in there one day after the artist Lucian Freud passed away (he was a regular), they had one table with a black table cloth and a single candle burning all day in his memory. You get some eggs and prepare an ice water bath. Leave eggs out for 1 min. Bring water to a boil and put the eggs in for around 7.5-8 mins (my estimate is based on how runny it looks in your vid). Then take the eggs out and leave in ice bath for around 4 mins for them to cool. Then you can eat or store in the fridge. The timing can vary depending on number of eggs, the type of pot, how hot/cold the water is, so you can experiment and tweak. The theory is basically you cook the eggs to the desired consistency and then immediately cool it to stop it from cooking further. Much cheaper, but do use high quality eggs as you are eating them semi-raw!

Good to see a £ comparison Gary - If I was simply hungry one morning in that area I'd go for the Portland, down to earth and decent value, however if i wanted to treat myself (and the Mrs) then i would definitely consider the Wolseley just for the surroundings alone. It's all about the sausage. A cheap breakfast is always going to show itself by its poor quality sausage. Got to be lincolnshire sausage, Best sausages you can get. I love going out to breakfast, it's my favourite meal and the Wolseley looked tremendous. It's all about the ingredients and ambience at that price level. The sausage black pudding is such a great idea, but it has to be good quality in the Lancashire league and looks like it really hit the spot for you! So, I would love to go to the Wolseley once every three months and then the Portland the rest of the time. The Portland looked like a real family restaurant that cared about what they were serving. Two breakfasts in the same day? You had the same shirt on, you must have been totally stuffed!! Also, your dedicated cameraperson (him/her?) is really developing a great style with the coverage. It's upholding the unique quality you have as a host, but also savouring the journey though the plate you have been served. Congratulations! By the way, does the cameraperson ever get to eat as well, you've probably been asked this before!?

I have just started watching some of your reviews, really like them One thing I observe, if you agree, is that if the ingredients are first rate and cooked well, then you are really paying for the ambience/name. Finding those that have the the first without the later makes for a great cheaper stop and you are showing some of those. For those that charge for the ambience, there is no excuse to not perform on the quality, but some do, and you've found some of those as well. The Wolseley, one look at me in my Primark trousers TK Maxx Shirt, and Tesco shoes , I suspect I would be redirected to McDonalds fast food restaurant in Piccadilly Circus. @919 and the cup of tea £5.95 ,and its not even in a mug. I burst out laughing. The wife was alarm, she states I have no sense of humour, so what was I laughing at. When I told her she said are they having a laugh. Well next time up Town I may have a change of clothes breakfast for one and I will direct the wife up the road. Little Portland Café. Looked good, but I don’t do small. And yes I don’t mind paying for quality, but I would walk across Green Park all the way to the Regency Café. I will give the Little Portland Café a go. All in all its what is in your pocket and what you can afford. Fortnum's is just up the road from the Wolseley and I suspect on par. I would go for the Portland, don’t even need to dress up.

Really appreciate that and I do agree with you. Was much easier to film in the cafe (albeit the guy in the background staring at cameraman). Thanks for watching!

Really enjoying your movies. The art-deco design of the Wolseley is exquisite. Former car showroom. Suggest you do cocktails and nibbles in Duke's Hotel nearby.

The wolseley is very high end and for nearly thirty odd quid it should be.
The Portland cafe seems very good and serves you a good meal at a very reasonable price.
    Thanks for sharing Gary

£23.75!!!!!! WHAT 😱 unbelievable I'd say 100% go into the exclent littel Portland cafe £7 for a small breakfast is absolutely amazing vaule and the large for just £8.50 is incredible vaule and as you said the quality was excellent not cheap rubbish at all.

They both looked nice but the beans at the Portland looked a bit dry. The Cafe I would say looked really good for a standard brekkie. Really enjoying your channel Gary I like the way you present it, you dont waste time chatting rubbish :o)

For an occasional treat, the posh joint for sure. Mind you, the beverage cost should have been included. The cafe meal was great value however and wins hands down.

I would expect the Wolseley to be quality at that price, mind you Harrod's proved that line of thinking wrong. The little Portland looked ok on the plate, but again, the quality was there, considering the price . I wonder if the Wolseley was named due to a connection to the cars that were originally sold there? Great reviews as always Gary.

The Wolseley looked good but a but surprised they served you streaky bacon despite the quality of it. The Portland looked a great cafe- obviously you'd just had one breakfast or the large breakfast would have been a no brainer. Fantastic value for central London. Great reviews, a really enjoyable watch.
