      Fun fact about early guns. The first firearms were so unreliable and $hitty to use that archers were still far more highly valued during those times. Early guns were absolutely awful, slow and unreliable but VERY EASY to train with and use. You can train a militia of villagers in a month to use a musket. If you want to train a good archer... you start with his grandfather. Good genetics mattered. Guns would fully replace archers only much later on when they were improved.

    • @gameragodzilla
      @gameragodzilla หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Rifles were also slower to load than smoothbore muskets, since you basically have to engrave the rifling onto the bullet as you ram it in, which takes a lot more force. So while you got extra accuracy, it was both more expensive and time-consuming to manufacture and also more time-consuming to load. This issue was first resolved by the invention of the minae ball, which had a hollow rear that expanded under pressure. So the bullet could be made smaller than the diameter of the bore to make it easier to ram down while expanding to engage the rifling when fired for added accuracy. Then once breach loaders were invented, that solved the issue of having to ram a bullet around rifling entirely.

    • @xb0xisbetter
      @xb0xisbetter 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

      Your dad is right though. The ironic thing about this video is it exhibits a fundamental lack of understanding of history. The U.S. made this mistake before with the M14. It was apparent to all that smaller intermediate caliber carbines like the STG-44 were the future because they were controllable in full auto fire and still ballistically effective at actually realistic rifle engagement ranges, instead of the ridiculous ranges iron sights of the time were graduated out to. They also allowed you to carry more ammo for the same weight.
      The U.S., stubbornly, went with 7.62x51 instead of one of the actual intermediate calibers being tested by other NATO countries, in what was essentially an M1 Garand capable of full auto and taking box magazines. Surprise, surprise, it ended up being useless for fully automatic fire because of the muzzle climb and ended up being a blip on the radar of U.S. military rifle history because it was replaced so quickly by the M16 chambered in 5.56, having already been deemed obsolete.
      Does any of this seem similar to the present day?

    • @xb0xisbetter
      @xb0xisbetter 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@Axl4325The very idea that it was meant to penetrate modern armor is one of its biggest problems.
      There's a relatively recent analogue to that with FN's meme 5.7 cartridge and 4.6×30 from H&K. They spent the 90s developing PDW systems for penetrating modern body armor only to be rendered irrelevant by armor advancements before they could be adopted.
      On a larger scale, this is the same reason why we don't see antitank rifles anymore. There came a point that rifles small and light enough to be practical could just no longer penetrate tank armor.
      Have they even shown that the new cartridge can actually penetrate level IV armor?
      Even if it can actually reliably penetrate commonly available armor now, will it be able to when our enemies try to counter it? It is a lot cheaper and easier to replace body armor than a new standard caliber and rifle platform. If it loses the arms race with armor ... as it always tends to go, it becomes very much like the M14 2.0.

      I talked to a few friends about pirate muskets and I heard about a thing called a "Musketoon" which is basically a shorter musket. If there's something specifically talking about muskets I imagine they're referring to these rather than the longer guns. But I still think at least for the time frame of the 1600s it'd be cutlass and pistols.
      Cuz they're great for closer quarters, and easy to carry, and can be worn while boarding so you dont drop it into the ocean. And most of all shooting several times without reloading is important for such close quarters.

    Fun fact regarding UNSC Space Travel:
    Cryo Stasis was an integral part of early UNSC space travel that proved to be a godsend during the covenant war, both to conserve manpower against the march of time and the enemy and to accommodate for the at the time slower Slipspace travel. There are veterans from before the war with The Covenant over 50 years ago that are still serving thanks to that, meaning that a man _can_ in fact serve side by side with his gramps on the frontline and have this exact conversation….
    Actually, could you imagine the sheer headache mostly-unrestricted FLT like Slipspace would be to fight against in a setting where local FTL is more complicated or unreliable then that? The Empire/First-Order and their Hyperspace Routes would scream bloody murder as a UNSC Fleet initiated Cole Protocol procedures and Slipspace-Scattered in random directions they can’t follow. The Infinity and the 10 Frigites it can hold within itself would be their Boogeymen… Just pop out of Slipspace from an angle that would be impossible using Hyperspace, rain down MAC rounds and Nukes on the target and flee before the local military can fight back.

      When you need to shake down a full sized Star Destroyer for lunch money, accept no substitutes.

      Don’t UNSC ships have a range advantage with their missiles and ballistic weapons anyway? The Infinity and it’s built in fleet could cripple the ships from afar before closing in. Hell, with an onboard Smart AI they might be able to outright hack into the ship from a distance. Or at least have a spartan boarding party insert one into the imperial ship to hijack it. You know how piss-poor Star War’s cyber security tends to be.
      And I don’t recall any Imperial Ships with anything quite like a MAC (Aside from the First Order Dreadnaught, but that’s more for orbital bombardment then the all purpose use you get from a MAC), so THAT’D be a shock for imperials to have to handle. Th Infinity itself has multiple larger ones and an entire array of smaller ones (Similar to the mass driver we use in Reach), while the parasite frigates should all have at least the one.

      Besides, if a bunch of different groups could infiltrate imperial compounds and ships with some stolen Stormtrooper armor and imperial officer uniforms, then ONI would wreak merry havoc all day long before anyone noticed. Frankly, ONI might just be scarier then most Sith Lords.

      Considering the amphibious landing, was he even able to _use_ his longbow? I imagine the string would've gotten soaked, and apparently (I'm not an archer and I don't remember where I read this) wet strings make bows nearly unusable. If that's actually the case, his only functioning weapon would've been the sword, which makes this even _more_ badass.

    • @eamonia

      Not after you shoot it once or maybe twice. I'ma guessin' that it wasn't a synthetic string because, well, they didn't exist yet but any organic string will dry out in a shot or two. The reason I know this is because I used to bow hunt with my crazy WWII veteran grandpa and no, we never got shit...
