I dunno, for those who've been watching since the COD weapon guides days, there's been a notable shift. Not a bad shift, but the current content focused around retro video games (with the rare iconic arms drop) is quite different from his earlier technical breakdowns of in-game weapons and load out performance for the latest COD title.
I literally was scrolling through my sub feed and was like "wait. tf did i just see?", scrolled back a little. and now I'm here because i will always flock to this mans content

Fun fact. Barrett customer support received a call from Marine scout snipers in Iraq. They were pinned down and their weapon (the barret .50) had a malfunction. The customer support team walked the sniper team through percussive maintenance and had the .50 firing again in no time.

One of the most underrated things about Ahoy is how his videos just seem to drop out of the blue. Bonus points this time around for being focused on such a legendary weapon.
I found out about Ahoy a few years ago with his mini-documentary on the history of graphics in video games. As of today that video is still the best quality video game related content I have ever seen online. This guy definitely needs to be known more
I met Ronnie Barrett a few years ago outside a movie theater in Tennessee. Turns out any movie his gun is in the creators send him a prop. He is a cool guy.
There are very few special youtube channels that have that special something. Internet Historian LEMMINO Ahoy Among all, these 3 are in a special category all of their own. Doesn't matter if it takes months, or a year for a video to come out. Doesn't matter if it's 15 minutes, or 2 hours. I drop everything I'm doing to see the new masterpiece.
There used to be a Half-Life multiplayer mod that was a realistic team shooter called Firearms (released before Counter-Strike!). It had a very small community, and if you were good, you'd be known. I was known for running and gunning with the M82. Great game, especially for its time. Good memories.
Thank you for the absolutely magnificent content you put out. Though rare, it's always a treat when you post something. Like an exquisite meal you can only enjoy at a very select establishment. The waiting list is long and you yearn for more, but one is happy and absolutely satisfied whenever that opportunity presents itself. If I had the spare cash I'd do the same, most of my subscriptions nowadays post very rarely. But, when they do it's a real treat, considering the entertainment made by larger company's you have to pay for takes much less care in the final product

Though it's still a generous donation, any donation at all is, Ahoy is definitely one of the people who deserves a lot of patreon supporters, since he's putting out world class documentaries, some of the best documentaries about any subject ever made, and doing it all by himself. He even spends a long time doing all the custom animations for the videos, which is not easy in the slightest, and is probably what takes the longest to create by a long long way. The reason animation videos died on TH-cam is because making a video longer than 10 minutes meant youtuber could put a midroll ad into the middle of the video and earn more money that way. But for animation youtubers, it'd take months of work to create a 10 minute animation video on their own, their videos were always like 2-3 mins because that was the only way they could keep a somewhat regular upload schedule. So for Ahoy, who's videos are chock full of custom animation despite most of them being over an hour long, it's no wonder it takes him many months to finish. It's gruelling work. If he could get to a point where this could be his full time job, youtubing, and even employ an animator to help out with that part of each video on top of that, he could pump them out a lot quicker probably. The research and script writing and voice recording take a much shorter time than the animation does. So that'd be good. Although I feel like eventually, the best youtubers are gonna start being picked up by major TV and movie studios in a few decades, as millenials start occupying every big position in the industry and they know how good people like Ahoy are, how rare that level of talent is. And people like Jon Bois because of his sports documentaries on the channel Secret Base, which are the best sports documentaries ever made. And BobbyBroccoli for his Boisian style documentaries about physics that even a complete lay person can easily understand because he explains it so well, and EmpLemon for his documentaries about any sort of weird or strange topic that turns out to be incredibly interesting because of how well he presents them e.g. the story of New Coke in the 80s, or the video about who actually climbed mount Everest first because there's a possibility it was climbed decades before edmund hillary and tenzig norgay, climbed by a veteran of the Battle of the Somme, George Mallory. And so on. So yeah, with full support of a dedicated animation team (and research team too), making these Ahoy documentaries but with an actual budget and team, so that they come out quicker, would be amazing. And someone like the BBC or ITV would probably love to have him, just as a voice acting/narrating talent, not just for his own documentaries about video games. He's exactly the kind of guy with a distinct soothing and incredibly easy to understand voice that is just a gorgeous voice to listen to just like the voices of other people such as David Attenborough, Ahoy is exactly the kind of guy that these TV studios/channels would love to employ as a voice actor to record a narration about a number of different things and not only for his own documentaries about video games. I'm completely serious about that too. Whenever Attenborough finally passes away, Ahoy would be a fantastic guy to take over as the BBC's voice actor/narrator or choice. And so maybe by the time CEO and chairman and president positions in these TV broadcasting companies like the BBC are all run by millenials as baby boomers have all finally died off, they'll know of Ahoy's silky smooth gorgeous voice and his ability to write and create world class documentaries, they'll hire him sjd that can really be his full time job from then on. If he wants that, that is. Maybe Ahoy only does this as a hobby and has a separate career for his day job that he likes and doesn't want to abandon to become a voice actor. But yeah I really think there's a good possibility he ends up being one of Britain's foremost voice actors/narrators.
Stuart, I hope you know that there are many people here who have literally grown up alongside your content. In high school these were always what I looked forward to watching, and now out of university I continue to enjoy them. Great work man.

I've produced some random stuff myself and most of the tracks in his videos are just basic synths, likely on a saw pattern. That is not to say they don't fit or aren't really good in the videos, not at all. Just that it's not hard to actually make them.
Ahoy there! I've fired the M107 while deployed in Iraq, and it's way more comfortable to shoot than many people think. I'm 5'6" and it does have considerable recoil, but thanks to those huge buffer springs it's more like a good firm push than a kick. Thanks for another great presentation!
What I love about Ahoy is the attention to detail like at 2:05 there are 48 stars on the flag. Most people (especially Non-USA people) would have just put 50 on it and called it good. Always top notch!

@@FozzieOzbourne when I'm gonna watch one or those videos like the Quake one, I always have to go back to the beginning and watch every single video in that series, in order. So start with the Wolfenstein video, then the Doom video, then the Quake video, cos they're a trilogy and the later videos expect you to have watched the other ones first because they give more context to the content of that layer video. That's no bad thing though, spending a whole day watching all those videos in order. But yeah if you're gonna watch the quake one, watch the Wolfenstein and the Doom videos first. You must do it. That's the rules. Sorry.
He’s one of those special TH-camrs who puts out quality over quantity. When you get a new video every week, it loses its wonder after some time. Whereas for Ahoy’s case, every episode feels special because it drops when you least expect it.

Crazy that the guy who developed the gun didn't have a background in firearms before he started making it. Figuring out how to reduce the recoil must have been quite an engineering challenge. Great video as always Ahoy.
Well I think he saw that tanks had muzzle brakes and incorporated it to the rifle, the design and experience in weapons is already there, he just beat everyone in manufacturing the first portable. 50 gun.
It's also crazy how most of Barret rifles are now going south of the border to Mexico, where cartels are using it to kill each other and even disable military helicopters. Barret of course refuses to comment.
Every episode is excellent in every way imaginable, but I think we all have to admit it: ever since we watched our first episode of Ahoy weapons, we fell in love with the ending. And with every next episode we just can't wait to hear what will be that final badass quote. Very satisfying.

I work at an outdoor shooting range and had the pleasure of firing nine round from the Barrett M82A1 today. I'd say felt recoil was comparable to a mean 12 gauge shotgun. So happy to see this pop up in my feed.
This gun definetly is one of the most iconic snipers in modern videogames. That long barrel marked with the huge muzzle brake is instantly recognisable, and it's usually the sniper that no matter where you hit on the torso, your enemy is turned into red paste. Amazing weapon.
Whatever you do, don’t stop making these. I thought you had quit, but I got this in my recommended. Your content is unmatched when it comes to covering famous firearms from a gaming perspective.
As a firearms enthusiast, I just wanted to say that I LOVE your videos. The first time I found you, I thought I'd hear a bunch of incorrect nonsense by someone with an agenda who "learned" about guns from video games and Hollywood, but I was pleasantly surprised to see that your videos are educational, unbiased and accurate; they explain the history, terminology, and mechanics of firearms in a way that is entertaining yet not confusing. Whenever I encounter someone who knows almost nothing about firearms, I always recommend your videos because you can do so in a way that holds their attention and doesn't bore them to tears like I when I explain it.
As someone who isn't a firearms enthusiast, i am not convinced that i undertood much :D i mean if i cared, i could watch it with a finger on a pause button and an encyclopedia at hand and i'd make my way through it fine, but i don't know if this makes for a great general audience recommendation.
As the story was being told of how the Barrett came to be from the inspiration of a photographer, it made me think of Brandon Herrera. He’s very close to going down in history to be the first man to create a 50 BMG Kalashinikov rifle!
This man drops banger after banger, and despite releasing only a couple videos every year, I still enjoy watching them due to the QUALITY of his work. Once again, Ahoy has done it.

Perfect timing! I just watched a video on the development on the Barret last night. It's an incredible story, and Ronnie Barret is an incredible guy. People don't appreciate the story behind this gun. It was designed before we had publicly available CAD/CAM. It was designed through pure analog genius. And it's incredibly sophisticated. The fact that one man, who was a professional photographer, developed it at home, with no engineering degree or experience, no gunsmithing experience, etc, is incredible. It's just a purely American story.
I'm always glad when Carlos Hathcock's story is included when talking about fifty cals or sniping in general. He was a true living legend and it's good to preserve his legacy, especially with everything he did to support veterans after he retired.
IIRC, the rifles that finally overtook his record were also chambered in .50BMG. Edit: Just checked, current record holder was with the McMillan Tac-50, and most of the longest confirmed kills are indeed with .50bmg. Still impressive that Hathcock set and held that record with a machine gun.

These videos are always so enjoyable. The information, the way it’s broken down, the music, the editing, the voice, the chilling lines. All enjoyable and hasn’t changed a bit. Not the most consistent at uploading, but it’s always a joy coming back to a new video.

I hope one day some form of mainstream media appreciates these amazing informational deep dives of videos. I’m not even a gun guy but I always love these videos when I see them. They should be kept in a museum or even in a video game as audio logs or whatever it’d fit nicely into alot of things. These videos will no doubt go down in history In decades to come(even though it seemingly takes decades to make them)
Something I never noticed until this point, the fact that you capture your own gameplay for most if not all of the footage used to support the subject of the video, and lots of it demonstrates some truly exceptional prowess in multiplayer competition. It's good to know you are as skilled in the games you talk about as you are at relaying the history behind the weapons that they feature.
Fun Fact: If you are too close the .50 BMG does LESS damage. As it pokes a clean hole through you, not dumping enough energy to cause massive hydrostatic shock. You still get fucked up. But it was wild treating that guy in the hospital.

There used to be a Half-Life multiplayer mod that was a realistic team shooter called Firearms (released before Counter-Strike!). It had a very small community, and if you were good, you'd be known. I was known for running and gunning with the M82. Great game, especially for its time. Good memories.

If I had the spare cash I'd do the same, most of my subscriptions nowadays post very rarely. But, when they do it's a real treat, considering the entertainment made by larger company's you have to pay for takes much less care in the final product

Though it's still a generous donation, any donation at all is, Ahoy is definitely one of the people who deserves a lot of patreon supporters, since he's putting out world class documentaries, some of the best documentaries about any subject ever made, and doing it all by himself. He even spends a long time doing all the custom animations for the videos, which is not easy in the slightest, and is probably what takes the longest to create by a long long way. The reason animation videos died on TH-cam is because making a video longer than 10 minutes meant youtuber could put a midroll ad into the middle of the video and earn more money that way. But for animation youtubers, it'd take months of work to create a 10 minute animation video on their own, their videos were always like 2-3 mins because that was the only way they could keep a somewhat regular upload schedule.
So for Ahoy, who's videos are chock full of custom animation despite most of them being over an hour long, it's no wonder it takes him many months to finish. It's gruelling work. If he could get to a point where this could be his full time job, youtubing, and even employ an animator to help out with that part of each video on top of that, he could pump them out a lot quicker probably. The research and script writing and voice recording take a much shorter time than the animation does. So that'd be good.
Although I feel like eventually, the best youtubers are gonna start being picked up by major TV and movie studios in a few decades, as millenials start occupying every big position in the industry and they know how good people like Ahoy are, how rare that level of talent is. And people like Jon Bois because of his sports documentaries on the channel Secret Base, which are the best sports documentaries ever made. And BobbyBroccoli for his Boisian style documentaries about physics that even a complete lay person can easily understand because he explains it so well, and EmpLemon for his documentaries about any sort of weird or strange topic that turns out to be incredibly interesting because of how well he presents them e.g. the story of New Coke in the 80s, or the video about who actually climbed mount Everest first because there's a possibility it was climbed decades before edmund hillary and tenzig norgay, climbed by a veteran of the Battle of the Somme, George Mallory. And so on.
So yeah, with full support of a dedicated animation team (and research team too), making these Ahoy documentaries but with an actual budget and team, so that they come out quicker, would be amazing.
And someone like the BBC or ITV would probably love to have him, just as a voice acting/narrating talent, not just for his own documentaries about video games. He's exactly the kind of guy with a distinct soothing and incredibly easy to understand voice that is just a gorgeous voice to listen to just like the voices of other people such as David Attenborough, Ahoy is exactly the kind of guy that these TV studios/channels would love to employ as a voice actor to record a narration about a number of different things and not only for his own documentaries about video games.
I'm completely serious about that too. Whenever Attenborough finally passes away, Ahoy would be a fantastic guy to take over as the BBC's voice actor/narrator or choice. And so maybe by the time CEO and chairman and president positions in these TV broadcasting companies like the BBC are all run by millenials as baby boomers have all finally died off, they'll know of Ahoy's silky smooth gorgeous voice and his ability to write and create world class documentaries, they'll hire him sjd that can really be his full time job from then on.
If he wants that, that is. Maybe Ahoy only does this as a hobby and has a separate career for his day job that he likes and doesn't want to abandon to become a voice actor. But yeah I really think there's a good possibility he ends up being one of Britain's foremost voice actors/narrators.
Stuart, I hope you know that there are many people here who have literally grown up alongside your content. In high school these were always what I looked forward to watching, and now out of university I continue to enjoy them. Great work man.

I've produced some random stuff myself and most of the tracks in his videos are just basic synths, likely on a saw pattern. That is not to say they don't fit or aren't really good in the videos, not at all. Just that it's not hard to actually make them.

Ahoy there! I've fired the M107 while deployed in Iraq, and it's way more comfortable to shoot than many people think. I'm 5'6" and it does have considerable recoil, but thanks to those huge buffer springs it's more like a good firm push than a kick. Thanks for another great presentation!

What I love about Ahoy is the attention to detail like at 2:05 there are 48 stars on the flag. Most people (especially Non-USA people) would have just put 50 on it and called it good. Always top notch!

@@FozzieOzbourne when I'm gonna watch one or those videos like the Quake one, I always have to go back to the beginning and watch every single video in that series, in order. So start with the Wolfenstein video, then the Doom video, then the Quake video, cos they're a trilogy and the later videos expect you to have watched the other ones first because they give more context to the content of that layer video.
That's no bad thing though, spending a whole day watching all those videos in order. But yeah if you're gonna watch the quake one, watch the Wolfenstein and the Doom videos first. You must do it. That's the rules. Sorry.

Well I think he saw that tanks had muzzle brakes and incorporated it to the rifle, the design and experience in weapons is already there, he just beat everyone in manufacturing the first portable. 50 gun.
It's also crazy how most of Barret rifles are now going south of the border to Mexico, where cartels are using it to kill each other and even disable military helicopters. Barret of course refuses to comment.

Every episode is excellent in every way imaginable, but I think we all have to admit it: ever since we watched our first episode of Ahoy weapons, we fell in love with the ending. And with every next episode we just can't wait to hear what will be that final badass quote. Very satisfying.

I work at an outdoor shooting range and had the pleasure of firing nine round from the Barrett M82A1 today. I'd say felt recoil was comparable to a mean 12 gauge shotgun. So happy to see this pop up in my feed.
This gun definetly is one of the most iconic snipers in modern videogames. That long barrel marked with the huge muzzle brake is instantly recognisable, and it's usually the sniper that no matter where you hit on the torso, your enemy is turned into red paste. Amazing weapon.

As a firearms enthusiast, I just wanted to say that I LOVE your videos. The first time I found you, I thought I'd hear a bunch of incorrect nonsense by someone with an agenda who "learned" about guns from video games and Hollywood, but I was pleasantly surprised to see that your videos are educational, unbiased and accurate; they explain the history, terminology, and mechanics of firearms in a way that is entertaining yet not confusing. Whenever I encounter someone who knows almost nothing about firearms, I always recommend your videos because you can do so in a way that holds their attention and doesn't bore them to tears like I when I explain it.
As someone who isn't a firearms enthusiast, i am not convinced that i undertood much :D i mean if i cared, i could watch it with a finger on a pause button and an encyclopedia at hand and i'd make my way through it fine, but i don't know if this makes for a great general audience recommendation.
It also helps on the fact that he uses video games as showcase examples so that the level of understanding for newcomers can be gained immediately

Perfect timing! I just watched a video on the development on the Barret last night. It's an incredible story, and Ronnie Barret is an incredible guy.
People don't appreciate the story behind this gun. It was designed before we had publicly available CAD/CAM. It was designed through pure analog genius. And it's incredibly sophisticated. The fact that one man, who was a professional photographer, developed it at home, with no engineering degree or experience, no gunsmithing experience, etc, is incredible. It's just a purely American story.
Fun guns to shoot, too. But oh my goodness is the ammo expensive!

I'm always glad when Carlos Hathcock's story is included when talking about fifty cals or sniping in general. He was a true living legend and it's good to preserve his legacy, especially with everything he did to support veterans after he retired.
IIRC, the rifles that finally overtook his record were also chambered in .50BMG.
Edit: Just checked, current record holder was with the McMillan Tac-50, and most of the longest confirmed kills are indeed with .50bmg. Still impressive that Hathcock set and held that record with a machine gun.
My favorite depiction of the Barrett .50 Cal is in Generation Zero, where it's called the PVG 90. One of the strongest weapons there, too

These videos are always so enjoyable. The information, the way it’s broken down, the music, the editing, the voice, the chilling lines. All enjoyable and hasn’t changed a bit. Not the most consistent at uploading, but it’s always a joy coming back to a new video.

Something I never noticed until this point, the fact that you capture your own gameplay for most if not all of the footage used to support the subject of the video, and lots of it demonstrates some truly exceptional prowess in multiplayer competition. It's good to know you are as skilled in the games you talk about as you are at relaying the history behind the weapons that they feature.
Not that it discredits the video's quality, but I believe quite a few of those clips were against AI.

If you are too close the .50 BMG does LESS damage. As it pokes a clean hole through you, not dumping enough energy to cause massive hydrostatic shock. You still get fucked up. But it was wild treating that guy in the hospital.
