Well done chaps, very interesting. Kitchener Barracks is being knocked down, well part of it anyway, so this is a good record of how it used to look. I was in Kitchener in the 70s so it holds good memories for me. Thanks.

"Onwards... to Chatham!" That sounded like dialogue from one of those great old movies, possibly one featuring Doctor Syn. I had to comment before watching all of the vlog, as that phrase made me smile.

the wall at 09:00 is whats left of the original barracks building, take a look at my video of the demolition of kitchener barracks you can see how much of the wall there is, the wall is listed and the doorway is going to be reopened up as a walkway to the new housing estate, I'm glad they're keeping it cos it does look pretty cool :)

It's a shame the barracks are coming down but that's the future as they say, let's hope they keep some of it so people can see and know what went on in the past and why..... Fun, that's what it's all about, plus the history & interesting subject matter, you two are quite some characters, and I admire your confidence & guts when flying the drone. Terrific footage, very interesting, guess the barracks will be turned into residential flats!

Very interesting and entertaining video as always. That blocked up monumental doorway you saw looked like an old prison entrance to me - it's very similar to the entrance to the former Bury St. Edmunds Gaol. Great stuff, though.

Great camera work, some really nice shots you got there, timed well with the music. Chatham is a very strange place, I do think the army gear made you stand out a bit walking down Chatham high street, not surprised you had some strange looks! haha

I'm just so pleased you use 60 frames per second for your videos. All too many people use jittery old 24 or 25 FPS, meaning you can't see much when the camera is moving. Even 30 FPS is pretty bad. 50 or 60 is so much better. Television has been 50 fields per sec since the 1930s so I don't know why anyone would use anything less. Keep up the good work!
Good Vlog Guys....The seagulls bit is funny :-) ... I'd stick to the countryside with that gear on you get allsorts of people having a go at you if you stand out from the crowd... personally I think the explore clothes look cool!
The magnetic interference is usually from wires/ metals under the ground bud.
Rebar in concrete upsets it too.
When flying in slightly built up areas with the Standard, you can get a bit of signal interference from all the wifi signals.

excellent comment and correct for saying so. Additionally, if you get mag error just move it a few feet and try again. Or, simply launch from top of the drone carry case. If you're ever in Orlando FL give us a ring we fly drones quite a bit😊

Ive not commented before but really like the way you put these videos together. Have you ever thought of creating some in a cinematic widescreen format with your drone footage I think it would give a lot of atmosphere to your work. Keep up these great videos.

The metal in the tunnels beneath was probably what was causing the magnetic interference with the drone folks
Get yourself a little Linear Amplifier and a higher gain aerial you will need a LiPo to power the amplifier but with this you should eliminate your receiver problems. Just don't take off or land near to your transmitter as it might damage the receiver in the drone.
I wonder what will be done with the barracks? Possibly affordable housing? Great explore, thanks for posting! Cols? It is 5 degrees F in my corner of the world.
Hi Ian, what drone you currently got is it the DJI 3? I've got the DJI 4 and I've never really had any issues signal. I'm planning on going to drop redoubt to get some drone footage soon.

Usually pretty good with barracks, but I have no idea what that building on the fence was.
That old building just frontage left ,was the barracks social club built for the welfare of squaddies ,.It was built to keep them out of Chatham,which had a terrible reputation at the time.

How could you drive past a shop called Persian Rugs World and not go and explore? I mean it's an entire planet of rugs from Persia!
DJI no fly zones and update the IMU....you really need to read the bmfa and caa guideline regarding quad flying. you're breaking every guideline by flying over populated areas. also PLEASE get insurance...join the BMFA.
Tony J Only Guidelines. If your going to do illegal activity with your drone your hardly going to try and get public liability insurance for it from the BMFA.... It will be the few that ruin it for the masses but their is nothing we can do about it. Drones will be banned at some point in the future.
glenwoofit no insurance will pay out if your flying outside these guidelines.... if an ESC was to go down or throw a prop....be safe

glenwoofit the few will ruin it. I'm a RC pilot B cert and an BMFA examiner...I love flying my quad.. the few will fuck it up for RC models too
Tony J Yeah I know where to fly but most don't. I used to be in the BMFA but it's a waste of time. I was cringing while watching this video. flying over a busy roadway is a no no... If people are not going to follow any laws they are not going to join the BMFA.... Flying drones will get banned at some point as to many irresponsible people have them....

The wall you speak of at 9 minutes used to be the old Buckley Institute or the Soldiers Institute (later mens NAAFI) and old NAAFI Staff Quarters. It was demolished in the late 60s early 70s and the front wall retained to form part of the perimeter wall for the barracks. I was based there in 2004 and loved Chatham. There was rumours of an old hospital under the car park but the entrance was concreted up so never got a chance to have a mooch!

Hope you have some form of insurance (BMFA)& have read the terms. You might have been ok but if someone was watching you while driving things might not have worked out so well for them.. Your actions are what gives drone flying in general a bad image. Guess you got lucky this time..

Air Navigation Order 2016 No. 765, PART 5, CHAPTER 4, Article 95
"(1) The person in charge of a small unmanned surveillance aircraft must not fly the aircraft in any of the circumstances described in paragraph (2) except in accordance with a permission issued by the CAA.
(2) The circumstances referred to in paragraph (1) are-
(a)over or within 150 metres of any congested area;
(b)over or within 150 metres of an organised open-air assembly of more than 1,000 persons;
(c)within 50 metres of any vessel, vehicle or structure which is not under the control of the person in charge of the aircraft; or
(d)subject to paragraphs (3) and (4), within 50 metres of any person.
(3) Subject to paragraph (4), during take-off or landing, a small unmanned surveillance aircraft must not be flown within 30 metres of any person.
(4) Paragraphs (2)(d) and (3) do not apply to the person in charge of the small unmanned surveillance aircraft or a person under the control of the person in charge of the aircraft.
(5) In this article, “a small unmanned surveillance aircraft” means a small unmanned aircraft which is equipped to undertake any form of surveillance or data acquisition."

Even if it had not been illegal, then flying next to that road would have been stupid, particularly as they had previously had problems with the IMU ( Inertial Measurement Unit). Just because someone wants to get "decent footage" does not absolve them of common sense and a responsibility not to endanger property or other people.
It is precisely because of such idiotic acts that there is a backlash against flying of UAVs which is likely to result in even more controls on what at present is legitimate use. The idiots, of course, will continue to ignore common sense and the law and fly irresponsibly and/or illegally.
In the UK the Air Navigation Order is the law, not a regulation, not an opinion. It specifically covers the use of UAVs carrying cameras.
Feel free to break the law if you want but be prepared to accept the consequences.
I would rather be boring than cause a possibly fatal accident.
