My heritage is Seminole. I was raised in Seminole a community in Okaloosa county. My grandma is full blooded Seminole. I love the song Seminole wind. My favorite of all time ❤
The Seminole tribe started in Gilchrist and Dixie and Levy Counties. The Calusa tribes from Florida and the Creek tribes from Georgia merged renamed the tribe Seminole. There was a big encampment in Dixie County just across the Suwannee River where the Suwannee Gables motel is today. The Seminole tribe territory was from Tallahassee south . Andrew Jackson came in and drove them to Micanopy area then south to Okeechobee and eventually into the Everglades. On Horseshoe Beach highway in Dixie County theres a smal park on the eastside of the road with a small freshwater sink. It's called Jackson's Waterhole. Its where Jackson and his troops camped before the raid on the Seminole's. Thanks for your video brinking back the history of Florida.
Interesting. I never heard this info, and I grew up in Chiefland, Florida. It was said that Chiefland got it’s name because it was the place that all the chiefs met together in counsel. Not sure that’s true or just a story, but it does track with your history.
@@lanieparker5730 I grew up in Bell. My Grandmother had Creek in her. I found the information doing research on the internet. The Chiefland name makes sense.
@@thorkinsey4793 Depending on the year, you may have known my uncle, aunt and cousins. He was once a local area football coach and lived in Bell. His mother was also rumored to have native Indian ancestry.
I spent the first 30 years of my life in Okeechobee. Every road leading into town you knew you were there when you smelled manure from the dairies. Lots of memories and stories of living there.
I grew up in indiantown and moved to Okeechobee 2 years ago right next to freedom ranch across from the lake. I love it, a beautiful place to live. Best neighbors a family can ask for.
yeehaw junction and jackass what ?wow you can tell what kind of people lived there. I wish all of Florida was appropriately named so people would know not to go there. Informative
I saw the first Star Wars in the old Brahma Theater. It was only one screen at the time. I was 6. They added 2 and 3 in the 80’s. I saw every 80’s classic movie in that theater!!!!!
I stopped by the Desert Inn a few years ago on a road trip, and I’m glad I got to see it before the accident happened. I’m impressed by how much remains and surprised nothing has been done with it yet. It’s sad to see it in that state. Okeechobee looks like a cool town. I wish I would have known it had so much interesting stuff when I was in the area, I would have checked it out. I guess I’ll have to do a return visit. Enjoyed the video and I’m glad to hear about the history which I didn’t know before.
Thanks for this video with so much Florida Seminole history. I am from Seminole descent and it felt very heavy for me also. I am a very proud American. I love this country and my State of Florida. Thanks for always talking up our State Jay. ❤️ Love your video content, you always make it real. Thanks for that!
Thanks so much!!! Wow that was interesting!!! What a cute town!!! I love this video!!! Thanks so very much!!! And the Rays won a game!!! What more could you ask for!!! Thanks again!!!!
Loved stopping there for YEARS .. neat spot. The spiders, bugs, etc that were on fishing line and controlled by the barkeepers were a HOOT .. when dropped by unsuspecting patrons. Even a Indian sitting by the rest rooms. Do miss it ! So sad !! 💔
Awesome 0️⃣ 1️⃣ 🏁 Thanks for the tour.. my hometown. Haven't been back down there since 2021 of May.. some new things I see...the school was where I went for 4th 5th an 6th grade. The spot at the lake good memories the bench where the bugs buged you me an the wife chilled there at times. The movie theater good times there too..remember seeing Young guns 2 there not sure what I saw there last. Thanks again for this I just happened across it in my feed. Love it an really wish to get back down there it's 3 hours from here in south lake county Hopefully one day I'll get to it an see it an friends again...
Outstanding , as I like to ride my motorcycle through there . Im suprise of that Sinclair gas station that nobody stold them gas pumps . worth money today .
Thanks for the informative visit to Okeechobee and surrounds. The battlefield has an annual reenactment, perhaps you can check that out. Next time I’ll check out that fine Tex-Mex restaurant!
Another great location video of Florida in a time capsule. you aren’t getting any readings in that cemetery because the ghosts know they are dead in that area lol
I know Jackass junction very well Hwy 60 runs from Clearwater to Vero beach, I used to canoe up the Peace river back in the day and it was like going back in time a few million years to Jurassic park no one was anywhere in sight and I loved it, love swamp cabbage as well, Nice video Jay !!
On that 441 Road there is an "abandoned" correctional facility (lands been bought up last i heard) a little bit before entering the town, me and a couple of buddies used to go there and explore around, found a lot of neat stuff from the time its was operational. And in the very back of the facility there was a bunch of other buildings dedicated to manufacturing of signs, glass, etc.
I Liked, subscribed and hit the notification bell. I live on the other side of Florida. I love these videos. I wish I had the time and money to visit these sites.
Bramahan Theater hasn’t been closed very long. I saw Toy Story 4 there just a few years ago. I grew up, born and raised in Ft. Pierce, it’s about 30 minutes east of Okeechobee, right in the ocean, but I’ve been to Okeechobee MANY times. I have an uncle who lives there currently
Great episode as always Jay… I had an idea for one of your upcoming roadside attractions… just a suggestion, but how about you take us with you to a cool abandoned place.. meaning - do a live episode where we’re with you checking out all the cool stuff that’s been left behind.. just a thought. Keep up the great work!
I was raised in fort drum in the late 60s early 70s played in that cemetery as a kid the Parker family lived behind the old fort drum store back then i think the Underhill family lived there later haven't been there in many years think ill visit my former home this fall
I lived in Okeechobee from 1996 to 2001. The freshman campus is not a college, it's where the kids in 9th grade go, the main high school is 10th through 12th. I've seen some movies in that theater as well, don't remember which ones though, and eaten at that Taco Bell. Good times.
Good one TJ, Have you done one on Saint Cloud FL. and Grand Army of the Republic aka GAR. One if not the only original GAR building still standing is in town. Disston Sugar Mill ruins (1888) and the remains of the Sugar Belt Railway.
I used to drive by The Desert Inn every so often on my Harley. I would stop for lunch and eat on the old red painted deck out front or inside at the bar. Many years back, a restaurant (chef?) from New England purchased it and was serving a Haddock sandwich which was similar to eating in a English pub. He also had the very best Mushroom Swiss burger I've ever had... and I travel the U.S. and internationally for a living. There used to be a stuffed female Indian mannequin in the corner as you walked in. I read that it was moved to some museum though I don't know where. Anyway, I was driving by many months ago and the fences were down, so I did some 'urban exploring' throughout the whole place... upstairs and down. There was no hope for the place. Rotten wood, everything falling apart. The motel rooms were even a little worse than in this video. It was sad but interesting.
Hi Tampa Jay hope you and Chris the girl 👧 are having a great Sunday I've just watched your video 📹 I always love ❤️ watching your videos your the best never stop doing your videos Tampa Jay love from Michelle over here in Nottingham in England 🇬🇧 ❤️ 💙 😊😅😂❤❤❤
The pharmacy on the square makes me think of the pharmacy in Indiana called "Butt Drugs". Cool advertising jingle too, perhaps an idea for you Jay, go visit Butt Drugs. Old town pharmacy still open today.
You need to do a video of bos train in Venice Florida. Have him talk about how the government found the circus to be important during war time. See if he will share the recording of John Ringling voice. ( From the Ringling brothers circus) Tell him the lady from the Ringling brothers birth-site sent you the info. He is a great wonderful guy! ( By the way, he has great food in that train. One of my favorite places to eat!)
Oh wow! The desert in sounds so violent, and I can't believe the buildings are just abandoned. They're in such a great location right by the busy road. What a shame those modern buildings are just sitting there. I mean, it would only take a half a million to bring it up to code, or maybe, that's why they're. Naaa. I'm just amazed how it's so quiet and hardly any traffic, in the country. Which will be built out by 2035. What a find, out in the middle of nowhere. What a great clip you put together.
Jay you should check out Gary Indiana. There are several homes and churches, a theater, stores, and other places that are abandoned due to the decline of the steel industry there. I think you would love it.
The restaurant/ bar was open and closed off and on, used to stop in there on the bike and they had the best cheeseburgers. Whoever owned it at the time gave me a tour of the upstairs one time, it looked like it had never been touched since back in the day, kinda creepy and did look like it was a brothel from a western movie. Too bad that asshole in the semi wiped it out, you’ll never be able to replace something like that. Nice video👍🏻
Loved this video, as always! Tampa Jay, have you ever heard the song “Seminole Wind” by John Anderson? If not, you should give it a listen. Your video reminded me of that song…😢
Jay, I think in my research, The Seminoles ARE the original Cowboys. Also as someone who regularly explores, Big Cypress? There are interesting trails... Another thing? Moore Haven.. The Altoona Indian Mounds.. Can't vouch for its condition, but that is another interesting place to visit. Want to see a great Wildlife Management and working cattle ranch? Look up "Dinner Island Ranch" Now I want Tacos and I just had dinner!!! Great video as always!!!!
My latest (today) Lake Okeechobee video th-cam.com/video/OklHmdIYYPo/w-d-xo.htmlsi=bxMb6hg7JruQNvby
Dessert Inn is gone now, nothing left, empty lot when two semis went through it
When I hear "Lake Okeechobee" I am reminded of the song "Seminole Wind" ...so much history.
Me too I almost said that! Great song

The Suwannee gambles, great reference. Just made my day thinking about that place. I did the pest control there for a couple of years 2008-2010.

Traveled that road so many times in my life an still do I remember seeing the semi in the hotel when it wrecked in to it
I remember that day they had to leave the semi-trailer in the building because the building was going to collapse when they moved it
got same cattle entrance in wildwood florida to brownwood the villages on 44, right past russell stovers candy east side of 301
