I came across this fascinating film by accident, and at first, I thought you were in the dry moat of the very odd North Weald Mobilisation Centre, another of Palmerston's Follies, but in the middle of nowhere in Essex. Then you said Fort Amherst, and I thought 'Dickens country'. What a weird place that is - the big vaulted rooms, all derelict, are straight out of a nightmare.

Sadly only just come across this video, me and my partner had explored the reservoir up to the drain pipe you climb, but this time we went looking for the spot you guys found a way in through and sadly it's now been closed up, we couldn't find any way in.. other than a track that leads directly to the fort but even then the windows have bars on them. So sad we didn't get in. We tried to go through the great lines and could see the wooden fence you guys ended up at before turning back but there's not really a way through up there ☹️ thanks for showing us what we didn't have the amazing opportunity of seeing first hand

It is Napoleonic era, built to protect the Medway towns(Chatham,Gillingham) against French invasion.
There are similar fortifications around Dover but on a much smaller scale than this one.
They were built by civilian and military builders under the supervision of the Royal Engineers. There were corners and areas that drew the invader into killing spots with no places to hide from fire. The defender could move around the entire interior wall of the fort without exposing themselves to enemy fire, and the top had a 360 degree arc of cannon fire that covered the river Medway.
Check out this site on Google earth and you can see the shape and scale of it.

Could you imagine living 8n something like this. Restore it to its proper glory and make part of it a home to live in to protect it. Who knows what hidden gems are in there. A metal detector would find some very unique items. I talk about stuff like this with the WW2HISTORYHUNTER. He is a really great guy. I can't say enough how I love your channel. You find some of the most interesting places. I hope I get better soon. I keep saying I'm going to Camp Grant here in Rockford. It was a WW1 boot camp and in WW2 training camp that all the medics in WW2 were trained and it was also a German prison of war camp for prisoners from the Afrika Corps and the U-109 prisoners were taken here. There is a massive artillery range and a Rifle and pistol range also with a few pill boxes still standing. Unfortunately my health won't let me go there. I hope I can get there before it's my time. I will do everything in my power to get there again to video tape it. On I'm old there is no video tape but yeah I want to record it. I'm also going to go to the rifle range to collect the projectiles to use to make new projectiles to use in my Endfield rifles, K-98 and my other military firearms. I want to use vintage projectiles to remelt the lead to make new bullets for my correct time period military firearms. I am really hoping that this new medication will help prolong the enviable so I can share it with the world. I haven't come across anyone who has done this and put it on TH-cam. I don't know why because it is a big part of the war efforts here in the United States.. carry on with your great adventures with your wonderful friends. Chris , Fez, Adi and all the rest of your friends that go with you are lucky people and must hold a special place in your heart. It's great to see that you have such loyal mates. I'm near the end and all the loyal mates I thought I had don't come around anymore. Even my blood brother and nephew don't come around. That's ok because my wife and my pup bella the boston terrier will be by my side to the end. The funny thing is I'm good with it. As long as I have you folks to watch and I can keep learning I'm fine with the final outcome. None of my subs know that I am sick and I made sure that they subbed your channel. I don't want this to get out to them that I'm sick. If they find out through my comments on your channel then the cats out of the bag. I know you don't talk about your subs so I know I'm safe. The WW2HISTORYHUNTER has done a video about me and related it into his own life. And I got a few hundred subs from all around the world. Unfortunately TH-cam has taken down most of my gunsmithing and ammunition reloading videos. Almost 60 of them. It cost me a lot of money to create those videos and my views went from 405,398 views to 4,614 views. That really made me mad. What can you do. Getting mad isn't going to do anything. I just wanted to leave a bit of me behind for the future so I'm not forgotten. Hopefully my nephew will come around some day. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for making some of the greatest videos. They have gotten me through tough times. Please don't say anything about me being sick. Like I said before you don't talk about your patreon supporters on your videos and that's why I said something just so you know how important your videos are. I hope that warms your heart a bit. Your videos are not just content to fill space. They are important. Cheers to you and all of the folk that you have on your channel. Sorry this was so long.

It brings you out to Asda when you go over the bridge to Asda you have to crawl because there's cameras that notifies the police. But it would make a good video. By the way I'm loving the videos I'm a new subscriber definitely ❤️❤️❤️

That is the unrestored section of Fort Amherst which is due to be opened to the public in the next few years if funding goes through and all the people breaking in there and damaging it doesn't screw up the bid or burn up the resources and finances needed! People clambering over brickwork that needs restoration, lighting fires, ripping out window-frames, etc. has caused much deterioration to the area over the last decade or two. :(

The Nazis turned all of them into POW camps, horrible conditions but some of them survive and still have POW graffiti :) you should check them out

Those rooms at the bottom of the staircase are rather sinister - and I don't really know why. They rather resemble the weird structures in the works of M.C. Escher. I do know I would not go there at night.

Went there on Monday, still untouched with the odd bits of graffiti unfortunately. Round the corner from there is a row of old cannons. IKS if you go back check it out, pretty amazing.
