      If you think about it, this mirrors various aspects of the attitude shown by "others" across the industry, compared to the Tesla philosophy.
      Too much "we know best, make it fit, that'll do" without a single structured plan.
      .
      Imagine if there had been a "What if they DO make it" meeting/ conference between "The big five" in say 2012?
      It they'd said
      "Just in case, let's unify a charging standard, including connector, charge location on vehicles" (if you design an EV, charge either rear left or front right) and other protocols.
      .
      Then, gone to CharIN and said "this is what WE want. Make it work".
      .
      Would have cost very little, but with hindsight, the environment would be very different now.

    • @BroncoPH
      @BroncoPH 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +9

      EA is single handedly moving all of the US to the NACS standard. These cars are too good to be let down by this complete incompetence.

    • @updlate4756
      @updlate4756 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      I mean... what do you expect? It's likely been known for months now behind the scenes that all of the auto companies would be adopting NACS... potentially since Musk went to the Whitehouse in January; potentially even before then. This switch is going to kill a huge chunk of EA's demand, which wasn't very big to begin with. EA has already been struggling as a result of building a huge and expensive infrastructure across the entire country to support, what, 10% of the long range EVs in the country? That would generate woefully insufficient revenue necessary to pay to support their network. This is all because Tesla decided to use a proprietary plug and refused to provide a CCS adapter to their owners to allow them to use CCS networks; starving those networks of revenue for years now. EA's first station opened in early 2018.
      Meanwhile, Tesla's been raking in billions of dollars in subsidies on the sale of their cars and on each of their factories through tax abatements and other assistance. I wouldn't be surprised if they've been buying up and hoarding critical hardware / chips to build their chargers, just like they've been hoarding cells and raw materials to build their cars. It's well known that EA's been struggling to get parts to fix and upgrade their chargers, and other OEMs have been struggling to get cells to build more cars... Lack of cars hurts EA due to lack of customers. It's all linked together, and it all gave Tesla an extremely lopsided advantage.
      You can see the huge difference in Europe, where Tesla has been using the CCS plug since 2019, which meant that their cars could charge at other networks, funding their operations and growth. Tesla opening their network to other brands in Europe starting in late 2021 didn't kill competing networks because they were already being heavily utilized and expanded, and all the cars and chargers were still using CCS. That's a vastly different situation than in the US where the government allowed Tesla to get away with murder with their proprietary plug and lack of an adapter, which only had one possible result; If Tesla ever opened their network to other brands (or now we know that other brands will adopt their plug) it will create a tremendous beatdown on competing charging networks.
      EA's certainly not a perfect company, but this whole situation isn't only EA"s fault... it's the US government's fault for allowing Tesla's anti-competitive practices to go on like this for so long. All for what, so Tesla could get an $800 billion stock valuation? FFS....

    • @rushinroulette4636
      @rushinroulette4636 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      It looks like a completely US made problem unfortunately. Its not an issue with charging standards, as CCS can handle charging at over 600 volts easily, whereas the Superchargers would have limited the Lucid as stated in the video (why they needed to queue at the EA charger for the same 50KW speed as the Supercharger did seem weird) . The only true difference between the standards is which network provider cares for their customers and which ones just wanted grant money and then forget about anything else.
      In Europe, there is no Tesla standard charging connector. Every EV uses the same Type 2 CCS combo connector (apart from a few Asian manufacturers that use Chademo). This has opened up the competition for network providers to every EV and not limit themselves to only a part of the customers. Even the Supercharger network is opening up to other customers without the need for them to use any adapter or for Tesla to install adapters in their charging stalls. Most providers actively want to keep their networks up and running and there is massive competition between each providers to open up new charging parks (it has gone as far that Tesla isnt even the biggest provider any more).

That's valuable info for buyers who are not aware of this charging network difference (most ppl I speak to).
    After all, you're going to do a race back form Vegas in part 3 with presumably these issues not being a factor to show what the cars can do in a perfect world vs this reality.

    Some of the comments here are way over the top on "class action!". Sure, there are some problem stations (no one says anything about the ones that were flawless). They got greedy and rolled the dice on the Green River station (knowing it had issues) by skipping Grand Junction because they were in a race. Oops.
    I drive that route a lot and always have to be cautious with the GR station. Last time I had to skip it completely, which definitely takes some planning in an EV that isn't one of the 3 longest range like those. Someone needs to build a 2nd CCS station there. And the Supercharger station won't work for CCS cars next year without an upgrade because it's all V2's. What we need is more redundancy.

The site near me has been garbage for over a year, with only a single 150kw unit performing reliably, with the other two 350kw either not working or being shockingly slow. Thanks for doing this test, super curious to see what happens in Part 2 and 3!

      @@patrickmay8261 I agree partially about skipping Green River but I do want to clarify a few things. All the ABB and Signet "150 kW" units can actually output up to 175 kW for 800-volt EVs. So, best case scenario, Kyle would have gotten a stable 175 kW peak in the Lucid on the ABB Terras in Green River (no Signet surge). Kyle stated the Lucid's charging curve tapers significantly by around 50%. At 80% he'd barely get ~75 kW. That would make a full charge in Grand Junction take awhile.
      I'm sure he would have done a near full charge if he had known there would be 2 EVs waiting ahead of him just to plug-in in Green River. But Kyle had no way of knowing that. He was also probably banking on the EA app being more pessimistic since the app has a lot of inconsistencies. The previous positive Rate Your Charge check-in in Green River probably also skewed Kyle to giving EA Green River a chance. He also wanted to use the Lucid's large initial range to his advantage, having a first stop in Grand Junction wouldn't have allowed him to do that.
      So he wanted to give the car the best advantage and just got unlucky there was a huge line in Green River. I don't think he purely stopped there "for clicks".

    This is such a shame, I have had two experiences with Green River now. Back in March we were coming back from California to Colorado via I-70 in my ID4. FORTUNATELY I checked plugshare before heading out and I saw that Green River was completely down, nothing was working at all. So the only option was to charge to 100% in Salina and go about 50-60 MPH to Grand Junction. Oh and it was also 30 degrees or so that day so minimal cabin heat as well. Made it to GJ with 6%.
    Second experience with Green River was for five days around the 4th of July. Stayed at the motel right next to the charger and charged there daily as we toured all of national parks in the area. Every single day was the same thing, one 150 unit working, one 350 unit working, and the Chademo/150 unit was limited to 100 Amps. There was no action at all that whole time from EA to fix anything that was down, now it appears that the 150 unit that was working for us is also down. Inexcusable for such an absolutely critical site. Also its a shame because Green River is such a neat town to stop at, the coffee shop, the chow hound, and the motel are all great. Not to mention the access to so many national parks.
    For what its worth, I also own a Model Y and we take that when it is apparent that EA won't cut it, but the ID4 is so much nicer to drive than the Tesla. Man I hope VW gets their heads out of their a$ses and jumps on the NACS band wagon. An ID Buzz is off of my shopping list until they do.

    If I took a real world road trip, this is how I'd likely do it. 1) drive 3.5-4hrs. charge enough to use the bathroom, get snacks, etc. 2) drive 2 hrs and stop to sit down and eat. Charge as much as the car will charge while doing so (likely more than 80%.) Repeat. That's how I drove with gas cars. Long stretch followed by shorter stretch and eat. After 6hrs, I need a longer break anyway. I've gone 24 hrs without stopping to sleep one time in my life. But it included longer stops every 6 hrs or so with a short stop after about 4.

    1:07:15 That's almost the charging time I can see in my Kia EV6 as long as the chargers are performing as they should and also if my battery doesn't overheat. Other than the E-GMP platform's tendency to overheat the battery pack by not prioritizing battery cooling over cabin cooling while charging, it really is an awesome bargain to have a $50k EV with 800-volt architecture.
    1:08:15 Nice that the Taycan shows range based on road distance and not just a stupid simple range circle like most cars, ahem Hyundai Motor Group, show. That's a lot more useful, especially in mountainous areas.
    Kyle, I agree about Electrify America in Green River. It needs to be totally ripped up and replaced with new next-gen SKSignet or BTC Power units. No more old ABB Terra junk that can't perform at its peak. There are many of those installs in New Mexico and the whole Southwest US, but it appears Green River is the least reliable of all ABB Terra installs.
