After watching all the charging issues with your Mach-E road trip, it's somewhat reassuring to watch this video from a few months earlier to see that constant charging issues are not inevitable with all non-Tesla EVs.

I am from India and I am shocked you guys have too many charging point and we even don't how it's work and you guys are so lucky you have those empty and good roads
Kyle, you can adjust the Audi planner, you can uncheck level 2 and only leave fast chargers and HPC only so you get 50-350kW chargers only .. my wife been driving her eTron so hard her GOM shows like 170 miles as well .. she also uses EA there is like 3 location around our area she has been using the Free EA charging that came from Audi ..
As for chargers being down that issue affects every charging network, including Tesla, some area the chargers just seems more reliable than others, but if you check the Tesla around me today you will see 2 units out of 12 still down .. but yeah Tesla does have more plugs but the power is also shared and the SC by me most people I talk to their don’t even have a house and they use the SC once or twice a week, the SC is always pack however no one like to share charger so out of the 10 working plugs only 5 normally charging.. so having more plugs sometimes don’t mean much if you don’t want to share ..
Also we did a 750 mile trip with the eTron driving the same route as we did in our old Model X and the trip in the eTron was quicker overall, so truly I don’t get the big deal others talk about on the eTron range .. faster charging for the win!

@@nevco8774 Well to be fair the performance was amazing the first few months showing off to friends and family, however the many issues with the air ride system, rear door sensors, panel gap alignment, snow and build up rain getting in the car when the rear door is open, the design of the rain/water guide needs redesign, going to service for so many issues since the car was new some never got fix or can’t be ... noise starting to come from the rear motor was the last straw.. for the cost was the worst experience vs the Mercedes the model X had replace .. and I won’t even mention FSD we paid for that we never gotten .. however if we ignore all the quality issues ... the car had amazing performance and we got allot of looks from people every time we open up the rear doors .. but sometimes we had wish the rear doors was normal tho..
I’m thinking of getting an EV because I want the ultimate relaxation/isolation car. How quiet is the model x on the hwy?
Recently test drove the model y and it was very quiet on local roads. But once I got onto the hwy, the road and wind noise was really loud. The etron seems to be extremely quiet - I wonder if the Model X is any better. Thanks.
@@Wasabi9111 Model X or any Tesla models are not on the level tof he comfort and quiteness of the EV models from Audi: one of the reason E tron is the most popular SUV EV here in Europe. Model X has the edge on range but Audi win in build quality and thier tech is amazing.
E tron Q4 is a more effiecient with great range with all the Audi features. It will come next year.
@@Wasabi9111 I wouldnt buy the Model X. Maybe after there is a facelift version from it, instead go with the Model Y, or the new tesla model 3, if it has enough space for you

I agree with your ETron cons...efficiency is even a lot worse as it starts getting colder out. That said I still love the car!
There is no way the second generation of Audi Etron to not get better efficiency and less thirstiness.
My wife and I just got back from a 2700mi road trip in the vehicle (South Carolina to Texas). Easy, flawless, quiet, comfortable, inexpensive trip without any range/charging issues save for a very minor issue at the EA in East Point, GA (just have to use stall #4).
Averaged 390wh/mi for the trip with an average speed over 2700mi of 63mph. High, but I had some Twitter folks tell me during the trip that their X is about the same. I don't know.
EA has gotten so much better that now I just do what the route planner says rather than safety-charge to 100% at every stop due to prior EA uncertainties. I've thrown caution to the wind as far as managing efficiency as well (used to watch my speed, watch climate controls, etc.), again because EA is improving so rapidly since June.
After this trip, we're more in love with this vehicle. Thought I might sell it a couple months ago, but that's a huge negative right now. We just turned 20,000mi on it in less than 5mo ownership, so unless the vehicle starts to have reliability issues I'm pretty sure we're keeping it at least until the Q4 e-tron (MEB platform) and e-tron GT is released.
There are things i prefer from our Tesla as well as things I prefer from our Audi, for of course each brand has their own sets of strengths and weaknesses. Wish some of these prefered qualities could be found in a single EV. Right now, for us at least, no such car exists. That said, however, if we had to choose between our Tesla and Audi, we're more inclined to keep the Audi based on what we deem valuable in our road-trip vehicles.
We're headed from South Carolina to Scottsdale, AZ in the e-tron next... Sometime first of next year if my wife can work it out on her end.

There is an EA station at Walmart about 10 miles east of the "Dayton" Supercharger. I have never seen anybody there. I dont use it, because a Volt can generate its own electricity from gasoline cheaper than 31c/kWh.

The Audi e tron is produced in Belgium , brussels so it is defenitely european haha.

I have the same attitude about travel........relax and enjoy the ride. So stopping to charge doesn't sound like too much of a hassle. But I can envision my husband having a heart attack. His main travel goal is "see how fast I can make it". I want an EV but fear he will not do well on road trips! We don't do many but they do happen occasionally!
Same here. Seriously looking at the Tesla MY. Had always admired the Audi Q5 but really want to go EV. Tesla’s greater range and faster more available charging stations are probably the most my SO could tolerate in road tripping with an EV.

Hi Kyle - great video. I have been waiting for your e-tron road trip. Love that car. Glad to hear your thoughts about it. It is a beast. Think, however, I would like to see ID4 and Audi Q4 e-tron first. More my size. Being in the 60+ age group ride quality - including quietness - is important to me. Sounds like the Audi excels there. I believe you said the ID4 was quiet and smooth too. One bit of data you may add to your video's - especially when you go off the beaten path - like this one - is how many miles it would have been in a ICE car vs what you ended up doing in a electric car having to follow the charger route. Thanks - love your stuff.

Absolutely could be a faster road tripper than many Teslas, but the EA infrastructure sucks hard. I just did 2000 miles and all but 2-3 stops had issues.

Hi Kyle, I also enjoy all your videos! I’m finally down to choosing between 2 EVs and your videos have really helped. They are the 2022 Etron and iX. Availability is playing a factor unfortunately. Etron I can likely get later summer, when I’d like it. Your videos show you love both EVs. I don’t do long road trips so I’m lowering my range priority to help justify the Etron. And Etron will be less $ 10k the way I’m specing them. Your thoughts please?

@22:45 I think there used to be a bug which prevented unplugging while the auxiliary AC was running, I suppose that one is now fixed?
Man those free charging stations are sweet.. big time score IMO (based on what you said in the video... Something like $30-33 for a full charge at one of the stations you were looking up 😳)
I have the same 2019 Tesla Model 3 and 2nd EV 2022 Audi E Tron combination. In my shorter drives to LV from California desert had many of the same comparative experiences.
In New Zealand our rapid charger network charges 25 NZ cents per kWh and 25 cents per minute at 50kw chargers, the per minute charge halves at the 25kw chargers and at hyper chargers i think its just a flat 60 cents per kWh. Always interesting to see pricing differences.
Has Audi updated the software since this video? How often does Audi provide a software update, and how is it administered?
I know that this is a wierd question but I have seen you comparing to Landcruisers and I am standing between a 2010 LC200 and a 2020 Audi e-tron 55. I have a cabin in the mountains and me and my family are quite often out on trips in the woods, but nothing extreme road-wise. What would you recommend?
200 miles is kind of a short range for such an expensive car... on my kona I get 230 easily and is half of the price.
Agreeded, I get 160 miles of my vw egolf that cost $25k. The EPA on my egolf is 125 but I’m averaging 160-165.
I have thought about the kWh versus time pricing structure and think time is better even if it punishes me for having a Leaf that charges at the slow end of the scale. My thinking is there are limited number of chargers so it is better to encourage people to unplug once they are past the efficient part of their cars charging curve allowing quicker turnover of the charger.
Kyle are you noticing any booming sounds while driving on mildly imperfect roads? I hear super low frequencies in mine and it really bothers my ears.
Would be so cool to have a dB meter when doing roadtrips so we can see the amount of noise each cars produces on same or similar route inside the cabin!

Hey Kyle, thanks for doing videos like this. Tesla makes it so easy to do, as you've shown in other road trip videos. It is nice to see non-Tesla EV's doing longer trips, and how much more planning they take to do it. And this is probably one thing scaring non-EV owners away from trying them, even if they never take road trips, or at least really long ones like you've done. I hope that the public charging network continues to grow so naysayers have even less excuses to try an EV, especially as they get lower prices, higher range, and faster charging.
Another great video. Love watching all the places you travel to in your Tesla. I will be buying my first Tesla soon. And one that I am interested in is in California. Maybe you can help me out. I live in the Nashville TN area. And would be flying to Cosa Mesa CA to pick up the Model X. And driving it back to TN. I am very worried about doing that. Because of range anxiety. Do you know if there are enough Tesla charges? For me to stop at. That I wouldn't be worried about running out of charge.
This just makes me more convinced that I'm staying with an ice unless it's Tesla for at least 5 years. There's a general attitude of ev drivers to accept major inconveniences and well as extremely higher cost at these fast chargers.
Things are changing fast. I am staying with my ICEVs for now, but I won’t be buying anymore new ICEVs. In 5 years EVs will have better range than ICEVs and large “gas” stations will have fast chargers.
@@user-tb7rn1il3q update: I ordered a Tesla. It's really the only viable ev for someone wanting to do road trips right now. Electrify America is more expensive than gas.
In my opinion, as long as you have to "plan your road trip" with charging stations in mind, e-vehicles are not yet ready for prime time, though they're fine city use. I rather go with a hybrid for now, which gives me a piece of mind of not getting stranded somewhere in the mountains while on a vacation. Also the myth that electricity in the US is a clean energy source is false, since most electricity is still being generated by "dirty" means, because idiot politicians are afraid of nuclear energy, which statistically happens to be the safest, most efficient, and economical of then all.
@@BillAnt a big source of electricity in the United States is natural gas and it is a lot better for the environment than petroleum.
@@mattahmann < Unfortunately there's still a lot coal being burned, and the wind turbines aren't as environmental friendly as most people think. They are expensive, need a lot of maintenance, kills a lot of birds, and the more we put up it will change the environment due to slowing down the air stream.
With all the road construction and repair going on and much more ahead, detours and delays create a big headache. And, if there is an accident, might as well park on the shoulder and wait for a Greyhound. Wish you could keep your hands on the wheel while driving.

What is the price difference between the Model X and the Etron - buying or leasing in the US? Somebody has inside on this?
Which would you prefer to roadtrip in, Audi E-Tron or Cadillac Lyriq? Both have about the same size battery, similar interior size, similar seating position, similar charging speed, massaging seats, great tech, etc.

I decided on one of these as my second car instead of a model X. Both these cars have dropped dramatically in price. Feb 24 when I am writing this. I got a white prestige plus 2019 with 47k miles for $27k. Truly a beautiful car, and a steal for the quality in it.
I saw plenty online for 23k-24k with more miles.

Would buying this model today be a good buy or what comparable car would be better? I like the space, I have two kids that are still on carseats and want to be comfortable. Also the price for this car today isn't bad. I don't plan on doing long roadtrips, I'll use my gas car for that.
There are plenty of people who don’t even know electric cars exist... and even more who know they exist but think they’re either extremely expensive or just glorified golf carts. Especially in rural America.

Well that's actually mostly true. They ARE extremely expensive by most people's standards Tesla, Audi, etc or they are sort of golf carts Smart EV, the new Kandi, the Bolt EV is nice but considered small by most people's standards.
People in Rural America tend to be cautious, and careful. They don't jump on bandwagons first.
Also more of them need range, and towing and cargo. Which limits what cars they consider useful and practical to them.
There is a reason why they like pickups .. they do anything and everything.

So, I like the Etron. cool car, and i do agree with what you say that electricity doesn't have to be cheaper than gasoline (although this would be a motivator for people to upgrade, and wth the price of electricity as utility in home charging, solar power, this would be a great car); for road trips, Etron kinda sucks despite is great charging capacity and range.
I would be about $31 for about 151 miles on electricity on an eTRON. a gasoline powered Audi Q7 (slightly larger car) woudl cost about $15 at today's average fuel price, and I could go 300 miles on said Q7.
If you take a hybrid Q5 (another car I'm considering, but its smaller than the eTron) woudl cost about $12 for 151 miles and you could go almost 390 miles on that car for the same $31 price! so, when you take a cross country trip you'd end up paying twice as much or even more with an etron. Great road tripping car as far as charging and range, but sonsumption is WAY MORE EXPENSIVE than gas.
See, I'm looking for a electric vehicle. But I need cargo capacity, so Etron is the most tempting out of the current bunch becasue is has a very useable cargo space with its square (albeit less aerodynamic shape). I wouldn't mind Model Y or iPace, but iPace too expensive (though so is Etron) and both model Y and ipace are too small for my needs. I don't care for model X that much, and that is even more expensive. so, I end up looking at cars like a hybrid Volvo SUV or a truck (Hummer EV? Cybertruck its not for me... :) ) Point is, I'd take enough road trips where I'd have to end up getting a second vehicle and even a Ford $-150 with the V6 Ecoboost would be a cheaper car for longer trips.... yeah. an F-15 would be similar MPG on road as a Q7.....
take a look at the Merc EQC. It's still hungry but quite a bit better than the Audi. Check Bjorn Nyland here on youtube. He does an absolutely stellar job of reviewing EV's.
I own one of these. Edition One: Only 900 made world wide. 9K miles as of 1/24/24. It is the bomb. I drive it just to drive it. I only paid $37K out the door

Is there a reason you don't use A Better Route Planner at all?
Great video! Nice to see some more US content about the Audi e-tron, which is actually the most sold car (regardless of class and fuel type) here in Norway in 2020. For example, the e-tron has outsold the TMX 18:1! I think some of the reason is that we use WLTP, which makes it easier to compare electric cars in general.. Some comments:
- You’d get 5-10% better range and even better comfort with the 19 or 20 inch wheels, which are narrower. (The recommended tire pressure is also a bit on the low side.) With that extra range, and some more experience with the limits of the car, you’d have an even better trip. With less motorway, you can easily go 230-240 miles. I’ve done 270 miles without hypermiling at all, but when the roads allow an average of only 45 mph.
- The route planner in your test vehicle seems like it’s still on the old software. Which you confirm in regards to the oil change error. I’ve never seen that. With the latest software, it should be able to pick the fastest chargers just fine. I’d say as good my Model S back in 2017. 🙂 It’s still a bit conservative though, and while you can choose between routes in the car, or in the Audi app, I like to plan my trips over at abetterrouteplanner.com for even more choices- and a better overview. With Premium you get live traffic, weather, you can prioritize charging networks, pick chargers, set thresholds, etc. etc. *I think you’re absolutely right though. While some of us enjoy this, and it works fine, normal people will run into problems on long trips with all other EVs than Tesla, even today.* The HPC CCS network in Northern Europe is getting really good, and you don’t have these vast distances as in the US, but the charging providers must start using common platforms and follow the standards that actually exists. Even Plug & Charge exists. th-cam.com/video/wmWpdjSGSbM/w-d-xo.html We can’t continue to have different apps and RFID tags for all of them. And we need reliable live status, in the car or the cars app.
- You’re right about the GOM, it changes based on destination (elevation, speed limits etc). 👍 If you loook at the estimated SoC on arrival in the route plan, and keep 5-10% buffer, and you can’t go wrong. Except if the destination is a single 50 kW charger which can be out of order or busy.. Luckily, we see fewer of these overs here nowadays.

I understood the difference between charging by Kw v. Minute is a state law thing. That is, some states only allow states that are energy providers to charge by the Kw, otherwise you must charge by the minute (or some time unit). Not sure if it works in reverse, i.e., you can charge by minute anywhere. BTW, I currently own a TESLA Model 3 LR AWD (2019 model). Looking to sell it to try out another EV. I take monthly trips to my parents’ house in upstate NY from Virginia Beach. I’m looking to up the comfort factor and love Audis. I traded my 2017 Audi Q7 to get the Model 3. Wanted to get the e-tron when they first came out, but they had some initial pains in the beginning with the charging cables and fires, so they stopped sales for a bit. I wound up going with the Tesla. Can you discuss more about your comparison between the Tesla and Audi on long trips; likes/dislikes? Thanks!

Since your podcast a few weeks ago where you said that the Audi e trons have come down in price so much and are a good deal I have been looking at a lot of videos most of yours especially one in regards towing there's not many out there but one question where somebody said that you could not charge and have the AC running or leave somebody in the car and have the AC running but you just answered that question that way I was wondering about in this video so thank you very much The content excellent as usual that you're right the e-tron 2019 are a deal at the moment you can find some that only have 12K and they're under $40,000 and that's the prestige I'm looking to maybe tow a small box trailer to work and back I average about 70 mi a day and I think this would work perfectly I have all my tools in the back of the trailer but still gathering information first thing I've got to do is to get a charge installed at the house

After watching your road trips for awhile I've come to conclusion that the CCS network needs to be creating expanded especially is smaller cities and large towns!
Please just remember that this Audi E-Tron is an ultra premium car with a base starting price of $65,900, so it better work as well as it did with it's fast charging rate. Most people can't afford a 65,900 EV car.
I have the Prius Prime which is a decent compromise EV/HV since we have a short commute. My guess is 80-90% of our regular driving will be EV and roadtrips will be HV. I think our next car will be full EV depending on how charging stations roll out. There are none in my suburb in Ontario, Canada for example.
Wonder about the Audi’s reliability for long term. Looks like pure quality.
Thanks. This effort gives an indication of how much extra time and thought must go into traveling with a non Tesla EV.
In a simple ice you could have concentrated on the end objective and the drive.
Should do a side by side roadtrip at the same time with the model Y to compare. That has dual pane glass now too but obviously will be louder then the etron still. You say the range difference is so little but I have a feeling its more then you alluded to, only one way to tell, test same day same time same road.

if you check eg TeslaBjorn’s 1000km tests, there probably wouldn’t be a big difference between the two. Audi would stop more often but charge faster. Apart from comparing purely for the stats, I doubt the difference would be meaningful for a real user that wasn’t doing A:B comparisons

You are blessed with low energy prices - here in Germany it's between 39 to 77 cents / kWh, but if you drive a luxury vehicle you don't care - same with large ICE SUV´s, you know what you are getting.
Boy the music gets old. These trips while possible sure seem like a lot more effort and time versus gas.

Strange the North Carolina Chargepoint chargers are 50kW.
In Oklahoma our new Chargepoint chargers are 62kW or 125kW like the new big dieselgate build in Colorado.

Most of the Dieselgate funds in Oklahoma were used by Francis Energy though with 200kW-350kW (with some 50kW units mixed in) BTCPower chargers which you got the chance to try one trip if I remember right.
This was one of the first SUV's and it has an older-gen battery pack. Think when it gets an updated one, it will be a very good suv.
