The 9.8 isn’t always guaranteed! Taking a risk every time you buy a “near mint” raw. Especially when you buy online and have to depend on photos to assess the grade. But that’s part of the fun!
WHAT A LUCKY DUDE! That’s such a sick book to win, you’re the best kind of creator man. While Nelk gave a Ferrari to their homie and used it to build an alcohol empire you’re busy giving us truly helpful information AND hooking homies up with sick issues
Rai #4 (as in SamuRAI) is well documented as the lowest printed pre Unity comic by Valiant. It’s hard to believe now, but I remember when that book was selling for more than $100 (raw, before CGC) and featured in Wizard magazine. Estimated print run of 10-15K.
I love comics. I just never understood the collect aspect of it. I mean, in the '80's I'd pay 0.65 at the newstand, roll it up in my back pocket and go to the YMCA. Read it and leave it on the bus like a newspaper. Who is this mysterious buyer paying thousands of money for this stupid shit?
Great video and topic!! I feel like it’s the same equivalent on the other end too. I know some books that are extremely expensive raw but cheaper graded in comparison to grade . For example people online are asking $160-180 for a beat up raw copy of ASM 194(first app of black cat) but you could get a graded 7.5 for around 200. I would much rather spend the couple extra bucks for a book that’s in way better condition . In this situation a beater of that book should be 100 flat
Really enjoyed this and your tier videos. Great content recently. I been an ebay dealer for a while and i am trying to figure out how to have laminate cheat sheets made of your content. Very useful even for experienced sellers. Thanks.
Small thing to consider - let's say you bought a raw book for $40 - the (possible / probable) press & clean is another $40 - grading is $40 - shipping is $10 - $20. So, $140 for a $300 sale - not saying that's bad, but something to factor in.
I would say your numbers are high on all things here -- press and clean for a modern is around $20 then grading is $20 and if you are getting only one book graded sure shipping will be high but DON'T send one book send a bunch then your shipping works our to $4-7 so yea $40 for the book and another $47 for the rest is still $87 but if you press it yourself then it is even cheaper and the one thing that isn't mentioned in this video is that 1 raw copy is $40 BUT sometimes you gotta buy many copies before you get a 9.8 candidate especially if you are buying online and not in person so people need to go in eyes wide open knowing that the minty copy on ebay is not guaranteed a 9.8.
Great video as always. Thank you for such informative content. You are the reason I started flipping raw to graded comics to have the hobby pay for itself and also so I can fund my vintage toy collecting. 😂As of June I’m entering my 2nd year of doing this and I love it. Keep doing what you are doing. You are a great spokesperson for the hobby.
I love this list, and would love more just like it. Been focusing on Marvel Comics Presents #79 and Transformers #3 recently. I especially like these two because even if you miss the mark at 9.8, the 9.6, 9.4, and even 9.2 would almost certainly still turn a profit from purchasing and slabbing
If its an important book, I ALWAYS buy graded. Back in the late 90s I saved for a copy of ASM #300. The owner of the shop (Literally a real life version of the Comic Book Guy from the Simpsons. Heavy, Goatee, Ratty Pony-Tail, and a Condescending Attitude) told me it was priced so high because it was in such good condition. Years later I get it graded and it comes back with the dreaded purple label. I was not a happy collector that day (I get he was trying to make a living but I don't have it in me to pull such sleeze-bag stunts) but I learned two things. 1. I got ripped off and 2. This kind of crap wouldn't have happened if the book was already graded. Yeah, CGC isn't full proof but the chances of having something wrong with a Raw Book is far higher vs a Graded One
It is crazy with how they can be extreme on price differences. Some blow my mind lol. But what I hate is when a CGC 6.0 book is $600 but a guy selling a non slabbed, his opinion is it’s a 6.0, and wants $600….
I do a ton of $1 bin hunting. I only use raw price to weed out my findings but then use 9.8 pricing to decide which books I purchase. Black books are always a good $1 bin buy as getting a 9.8 is very tough so the census is low. IMO if I have a true raw NM candidate and its value is $50 but the 9.8 is $400 then why would I ever sell for $50? I would be looking to get at least $100- $200 for the book or I would slab myself. Why leave money on the table just because someone sold a raw cheap on Ebay?
I'm starting to see RAW prices on many books climbing up to where slabbed copies were selling 1-2 years ago. While I'm also seeing slab prices all over the place. Super cheap or ridiculously high. I feel like I'm on a small boat in a hurricane 🌀.
G.I. Joe #2 is $15 raw? Wow, prices have not changed on that book too much. I remember buying a copy at a comic shop for my G.I. Joe collection only a few years after it came out, I paid $10. I thought that was outrageous at the time. Now I could probably buy $300 in raw copies and maybe get a 9.8 out of the bunch, and still make money.
The price difference between raw and graded is whats keeping the flippers in the industry. Hopefully it'll regulate itself after the collapse scares off the get-rich-quick people.
Rai is pronounced Rye, if you're wondering. Pre-Unity Valiant, the Jim Shooter/Bob Layton early 90s stuff is awesome AF. The reboot in 2012 with Dino (Dinesh Shamdasan) was incredible too. A shame what happened to Valiant Entertainment after Dino was forced out. I’m hoping to see those 9.8 Valiant books on your eBay page soon
All X-Men books from issues 100-175 are blowing up. It's nuts. You can find "rag" copies everywhere. - but nice books? - like CGC 9.0 and Higher? PRICES ARE SKYROCKETING. It's CRAZY.
Another weird one is the amazing Spider-Man movie adaptation issue 1 photo cover. Check the 9.8 price. No idea why. Found that when it popped up when I added covrprice to my clz. Sent it away and got a9.8.
Doomsday cameos (that aren't MOS 17 - that one, the first cameo, should be expected). But the other 3 cameos leading up to MOS 18 are all fairly inexpensive raw but can sell for >$100 in a 9.8: Superman 73, Adventures of Superman 496 and Action Comics 683.
It’s odd to me how a book put in plastic could drastically increase the price. We are letting a handful of graders determine the grade of your book. I noticed most TH-camrs have been spot on determining the grade of their books or at least very close. Pretty soon we aren’t going to need CGC to tell us the grade of our comics especially modern age comics as well as Bronze Age.I get we need them to check Golden Age and Silver Age comics to determine in the book was restored or not but that would be the only use for them for me personally. Weird they feel the need to implement 9.9 grades now. I guess 9.8 is the new 9.6 value or worse yet 9.4 value
What is your opinion!??? About OverStreet Price Guide!! I have a friend that owns a comic book store…. He always goes by the “Over street”….. he complains about sells!!! I try to tell him… lower the prices…. Doesn’t listen… still complains about sales!!! What do you think/ opinion???? (Any and all give your thoughts/ opinions).
May I offer som unsolicited production feedback? You should think about dropping the background music past the intro. It's not loud enough to enhance your already great videos, and the high-end sounds often just come through as buzzes as clicks. We watch for your insights and opinions, so you probably don't need music running under your narration! 👍👍👍 Great info always.
@cnote729 how many were printed in the first run versus the second? If 10k were printed the first time, and 500 to 1k the second round. Less books to go around.
All these prices are made up numbers I've seen very low graded books sell all for thousands and vice versa. We all live in an imaginary lala land for example WHY ! would anyone want to slab a plastic case on a comic book and simply put it away Does anyone read comics anymore and admire the the art in it ?
My local comic shop was selling a X-Men #4 (1991) with a 1-inch corner crease for $25 raw. I told her it was worth $5 and she laughed. I obviously disagreed with her, but she said "someone will buy it". Bought a NM one later that day on EBay for $12. This video is just you trying to convince people that their perfect raw books aren't worth anything and they should sell to you. Ha ha ha ha. Right. Ha ha ha. There is NO WAY a X-Men 136, perfect raw, would go for only $40. No way at all unless the seller is dumb. It would sell instantly on EBay at that price. It's perfectly liquid at $100+
An X-Men 136 CGC 9.6 just sold for $109 on EBay, I wouldn't pay $100 raw for that book in NM condition, not worth it. If the book is a true 9.8 candidate and the pictures show that, some bidders may risk it and spend a few hundred.
@MintHunterComics: @ryanfindlay845 is correct to mention that "Rai" (as written in English) is pronounced like the Canadian Whiskey "Rye" in Japanese. However, @joeythestuntmaster6210 is incorrect to equate this pronunciation with samuRAI, at least based on the Japanese character written next to the name (although I haven't read the story so perhaps they refer to the badass Rai as a "samurai" in the comic and that is what caused the confusion?). Anyways, "samurai" is correctly written as 侍 and means "one who serves" (the character consists of two parts, a man 人 next to a temple 寺). The Japanese character on the cover of the comic book is clearly not related to the word samurai. There are several correct pronunciations for the character found on the cover 霊 . Most commonly it is pronounced "rei," as in the compound 幽霊 yuurei meaning "ghost, apparition, etc." Which means that you are kinda correct to pronounce it that way!! 👍 But, it has a ton of pronunciations that have been in use since ancient times. Now you know why Japanese is considered the most difficult language in the world for anyone outside of East Asia! :) And yes, I speak/read/write Japanese, Classical Japanese, Chinese, Classical Chinese, and a few European languages, so I am actually qualified to make that assertion 😉. I am actually the weakest of my multi-lingual friends, one of whom speaks/reads/writes 15 languages! We all agree that attaining fluency in Japanese is truly the most difficult, so don't feel bad about not knowing how to pronounce something in Japanese 😁
Yes I shot this video at 4am 😂
New dad life, right?
New babinos and killer work ethic🙏💯
I bought a copy of Dazzler #1 for five bucks, found out it was the printer error variant and sold it for $315 bucks earlier this year.
Great timing
Top 10 Most Expensive Coverless Books!
The 9.8 isn’t always guaranteed! Taking a risk every time you buy a “near mint” raw. Especially when you buy online and have to depend on photos to assess the grade. But that’s part of the fun!
Those old Transformers comics are always rags when you find them. Finding a 9.8 in just about any issue from the run is really hard.
Yes! I read mine to death back in the day.
WHAT A LUCKY DUDE! That’s such a sick book to win, you’re the best kind of creator man. While Nelk gave a Ferrari to their homie and used it to build an alcohol empire you’re busy giving us truly helpful information AND hooking homies up with sick issues
You should do a video on Second print variants. Why some second prints are more sought after
Because it's a lower print run or they make the 2nd print have a more desirable cover. End of video.
😂 James just had to get a video out while he was up all night getting the claim sale stacks ready
That’s insane
Yup. And the Rai #3 is a close 2nd. Also a pricey/rare one.
I bought a raw copy of spawn 226 retailer black and white cover for 40$ sent it in for gradeing got the 9.8 and it sold for 1500$
I love comics.
Love the Dinobots! They were a great looking toy and funny characters in the cartoon series
Yeah a couple head scratchers on this list. Definitely gotta go check my WOS #1 now
Who and Why would be my main questions. I guess 9.8 bragging rights are one hell of a drug.
Really enjoyed this and your tier videos. Great content recently. I been an ebay dealer for a while and i am trying to figure out how to have laminate cheat sheets made of your content. Very useful even for experienced sellers. Thanks.

Just looked up the robin. 125$ Canadian raw buy it now. Bunch around that price. Cool video! Good to know when digging
Great video. Very informative. I definitely liked the context of this video. Keep up the great work. 😎

Nice information to keep in the back pocket! I just got a minty fresh Swamp Thing #90 last weekend and now I might want to submit it!
Great video and very helpful. Just curious, would ditect edition Robin be same worth as newstand Robin?
G.I. Joe #2 is $15 raw? Wow, prices have not changed on that book too much. I remember buying a copy at a comic shop for my G.I. Joe collection only a few years after it came out, I paid $10. That Animaniacs one has only 16 9.8's out there. 17 if you count the one Multipack edition one.
excellent video i appreciate the hard work
Don't forget the 9/11 memorial Spider-Man number 36
Sounds like good candidates to buy up raws to go after the 9.9/10 with comparison grading.
congrats to the winner. #IWANTCAPTAINCARROTPLEASE
The price difference between raw and graded is whats keeping the flippers in the industry. Hopefully it'll regulate itself after the collapse scares off the get-rich-quick people.
Wolverine #17 newsstand is the biggest jump I know of

This is the main reason I think CGC is bad for the hobby. I'd even go as far a saying it's a scam. But then again, there is a sucker born everyday!!
Why such a huge price difference? That's pretty expensive plastic.
That "Rai" is a shock.
So is the "Robin."
Go Birds!!
i sold a star trek TNG #1 for $200 plus and a Giant Size captain marvel monica R #1 $200 plus.
The crap part about comics are people trying to sale raw for slab prices…and the fomo pricing
I just laugh when I see that
Problem is most of these books the 9.6 is worth $60 (IE F/A) so buying a raw you might buy 10 and get a 6 to find the one 8
Great video
May I offer som unsolicited production feedback?

RAI #4 SAY WHAAATTT?! 😅 crazy
Go eagles 🦅🦅 love the hat
Can you do this and take into account how much it costs (on average) to convert raw to CGC 9.8? This will make a true comparison.
70s books aren't hard if you know how to press properly and have a good eye.
Maybe you should have also showed the prices for the 9.8 newsstand.
Usagi Yojimbo #10
Why the 2nd prints worth more???
Lower print runs.
@relickeep really....interesting. I got a 1st print Robin 1.....so the 2nd print worth more just cause it has a lessee print run....ok
@cnote729 how many were printed in the first run versus the second? If 10k were printed the first time, and 500 to 1k the second round. Less books to go around.
I just feel like slabs have ruined my hobby. I hate slabs.
This is a primary reason I only collect RAW. No graded premium is of any value to me whatsoever. Won’t have them. won’t buy them.
All these prices are made up numbers I've seen very low graded books sell all for thousands and vice versa.
We all live in an imaginary lala land for example WHY ! would anyone want to slab a plastic case on a comic book and simply put it away
Does anyone read comics anymore and admire the the art in it ?
Many of the graded books I own I also have raw copies of so I can read them. You dont have to do one thing or the other.
Ridiculous chasing these. Youll go broke.
Love the videos!!!
I appreciate them!!!
But….
Thumbs down for the Philadelphia Eagles hat!!! 👎👎👎👎👎👎👎
