Yeah it was just bad phrasing on my part. I was around when the first alloy bikes started coming out - they were all the rage until they started cracking. Back then people thought that alloy bikes weren't "worth a shit" either. How times change...
I made a street bike/race bike with the best compromise of bost worlds. Its obviously not the best of both worlds but is good all around and i feel that as the rider its my job to make up for the difference. Great video very accurate!
🤣 I have street bike but stripped it down as soon as I got it. Took off the reflectors, stickers and front brake. I just wanted the sturdier construction because I weight 210 and put it through its paces
@@iwaswithyourmom9410 lol! Never even thought about that. But I do think the dark green with black wheels and tires looks kinda dope. Its 2013 diamondback venom that I've kinda beat up and im just now looking to upgrade looking.
I've had street BMX bikes with large front sprockets. This was done for personal preference as I wasn't riding in parks and only grinded on the opposite side so I could get to higher speeds with less effort if I wanted. Granted I was riding in some places where you had to out run security or your friends so any advantage I could get I would take. Looking back I realize I was stupid but I'll say when we had to get out fast I definitely had the advantage from a technical point of view. In all honesty we never got caught or we were left alone so there was no need but it always make sense in my mind. I'll admit I had the biggest disadvantage too though. I never bothered to cut anything down to make it lighter and only removed the brakes for tricks and because they generally didn't work anyway. The levers barely moved without cables. I didn't technically remove the brake either. I just cut the cables on both ends because I intended to put something on there that completely eliminated the problem.
can I also add in the shape of the frame, the tires, and the fact that most freestyle bikes 99% of the time don't have front brakes and most the time back brakes aswell unless you are riding park
I was riding half of my life a race bmx on the street and jumping double than other people :) and expecially it never broken :) it's like a skateboard...it will depend how you land your tricks...everybike will be broken if you missing style o land in wrong way :) very simple
i bought myself kinda race bmx i dont really know what it is, its heavy framed and with big sprocket and im curious how high and what street tricks will i be able to do with this monster?
Dark Flame Gaming riots power blocks are mainly better for paved corners. However if you ride most non-elite tracks, chances are that your corners aren't paved. I do recommend checking out maxis tires and maybe some box. However knobbliest won't help you that much and personally I don't like them. (That's my opinion)
BMX literally stands for Bicycle Motocross. A BMX is a race bike. Freestyle BMX which is what you’re looking for can be divided into different categories. Flat land, street, park, dirt, and vert. If you’re mostly looking at dirt jumping then a chromoly race bike will work well.
bought one from my neighbor it’s kinda a box of both with the heavier frame and bottom brakes but bigger sprocket and only rear brakes with a super hard light seat for racing
I want speed but I like to ride off road too should I use 20" mountain bike tires or knobby bmx tires ( I don't have any money but if have both types of those tires)
Crazy thing is most freestyle bikes are lighter than the bikes I used to race on now. In the early 2000s I'd have a 20 ish pound race bike and a 30+ pound freestyle bike , my current freestyle bike is about 20 lbs.
Can you change or take off parts from race bmx bikes to make it sort of street because I’m a beginner and fucked up in buying race bike so that’s my bad on my part
the smaller sprocket on the street/trick BMX is because low speed gearing/hig torque is used in trick riding....vs the race BMX where speed is the key factor.
Yeah, when those attachments first started appearing on bikes, they were foot pegs. It's a bit like a lot of the park and street bikes having no brakes at all these days. If I covered everything in this video, it would have been hours long. I winged this whole thing without a script, so I'm happy enough with how it came out. Cheers!
Technically BMX bikes are NOT made with solid steel tubing it's Hollow chromoly tubing for the good bikes and high-tensile steel hollow tubing for the cheap bikes. Also some BMX bikes use a combination of the two
Yep, agreed, why I showed the brakes is because here in New Zealand, it's the law that bikes must be sold at bike stores with brakes on them. So if you walk into a store as a parent looking for BMX bikes, you will see the street bikes will all have brakes on them. Once they leave the store, most street riders take them off.
I'm new to the sport and I don't understand why people don't run brakes, I watched some videos where people were putting their feet on the tire to slow them down, it seems to defeat the purpose. Like I said I am new to this so I am just curious.
If you listened, he explained the materials necessary to do tricks and put more stress on the frame vs the materials needed to keep the race BMX bikes light weight. So no you can't convert it, that would be like me thinking I could take a road bike/commuting bike that only goes on city streets and put different forks on it and expect it to hold up on mountain biking trails, it's not going to be ideal or safe for that matter.
Nice video! may I ask you something? I want to transform my Street BMX to a Race BMX. So far, I'm not interested in make it lighter, I just want to change the brakes, handlebar and front sprocket. About the sprocket sizes, now I have 9 back and 25 front, if I want to change only the front sprocket, which size would you recommend me? And which size of handlebar? Thank you very much
+Luis Alberto Ahumada Abrigo. I realize this is 6 months late, but the average gearing for race bikes are a 44/16 gearing (assuming you're riding 20" and not 24" cruiser). That is, a 44t front chainring, and a 16t chain drive. As I said, this is only average. Start with it and then figure out what gearing will work best for you. Some like a bit lower gearing so they're faster out of the gate. Other may prefer higher gearing so they have a better top speed. The choice really comes down to what makes you comfortable. I prefer the 44/16 gearing on most tracks, but some people like to change it up depending on track conditions, length, difficulty, etc. Do what feels best to you. But 44/16 is a great place to start. Cheers! :D
DINOBLADER nothing is different between the bike. They are the same build. But often street riders take off the brakes for barspins, and park riders normally don't. It's all personal preference though.
Tim Desrosiers ok.. but it feels practical to keep brakes on while ridin street and off while ridin park.. goin into another bike is way safer than going into a truck.. well thanks anyway
Here in New Zealand, bikes being sold from a shop must have brakes on them (it's the law here). So if a parent walks into a store, they will see all BMX bikes (street and race) with brakes on them. Once the bikes leave the store, the brakes can be (and often are) removed. I aimed this clip at parents, in the hopes that they might be helped with making the right decision. Cheers.
Yep, people often do. The first thing needing to be changed is gearing, and removal of the foot/grind pegs. You can run them with the low street gearing, but it's almost impossible to keep up in a race with gearing that low, you just blow your legs off revving too high.
Thanks. That's who this clip was really aimed at. Most younger people know all this (and more) already. Many parents have no idea and I have seen some make the wrong decision when it comes to buying street bikes for their kids for racing.
No issues with assembly for me th-cam.com/users/postUgkxHL1v1R3NE5x4KiYfyt8dnQmyNYz7qi5L but I could see where some might benefit from using an experienced bike assembler/mechanic. I'm an older rider starting back after a 10 year break. This bike exceeds my capabilities and has been easy to get comfortable riding. I'm mostly on easy trails with almost no street riding and have not been disappointed with the performance of the bike. My fitness level is far below what I previously rode with and because of that the mileage is going on the bike slowly. While I'm losing weight slowly, the bike seems to tolerate my 220 pounds just fine. The bike has been used by several family members ranging from 5'5" - 5'9".
I think every BMX biker is looking for the lightest possible, no for speed so much as the ability to control it. Its a lot easier to move around 10 lbs or 20.

Excellent explanation of the differences between street and race BMX bikes👍
Thanks for making this video!
Cheers. Still amazed that people are watching this. It could do with an update...
He said the street bike was heavier due to a "Solid" steel frame. Steel tubing yes. Solid steel no.
yea, would be more like 50kg, damn 2 wheel tank.
Yep, that was a bit of a slip of the tongue on my part. I was supposed to have said "a more-solid steel tubing than race bikes", but I cocked it up.
I think he would mean it figuratively, rigid would be a better word..
Yeah it was just bad phrasing on my part. I was around when the first alloy bikes started coming out - they were all the rage until they started cracking. Back then people thought that alloy bikes weren't "worth a shit" either. How times change...
Both wrong! Street BMX that actually do some street riding are made up out of atleast fully chromoly.
Forks, bars and stem are made out of chromoly.

Street bikes would be just as light if you removed those wheel reflectors! DAMMIT!!!

Most importantly, the race bike has significantly progressive geometry, longer top-tube, longer triangle. A race bike almost always looks faster too.
