What I love the most about this song was how it's not just Mulan that's struggling. Everyone, all the men, are failing just as much. But it wasn't until Mulan showed true strength and discipline that it set off a chain reaction for everyone else

I love that Shangyu, the main villain was one of the only man who just refers to Mulan as a "Soldier" and not care about her gender or looked down on her because of it. This is because Mongolian army lets women in their army and some even have high ranks equal to the men in their army.

What made the original Mulan movie so superior to the newer live action one is that it actually showed the value of hard-work, brotherhood/sisterhood, determination, and adversity. It's not just about a girl-boss who's automatically perfect at everything and can never be bested or have anything taught to her by a man. It's a realistic story that shows how strength of mind and spirit can supersede physical limitations when you want something bad enough and are willing to put in the time and effort to do so. And that you don't have to try to weaken or stupefy others to make yourself feel strong and empowered. I really wish Disney would go back to making movies like this.

I never realized as a kid how much this song and "Honor To Us All" highlights the struggle for men and women on society. Women HAVE to be gentleand beautiful but men have to be strong and maintain their emotions. We see Mulan struggle with the matchmaker and automatically associate "ugh beauty standards, f that" But even though she succeeds with the men, i can't imagine the expectation placed on the rest of the men who have to be cool, calm, and collected ALL THE TIME.

The scene montage for this song does a great of job showing how one's potential can be a threat to others, as the other trainees sabotaged Mulan every chance they got. Another interesting note is that even though Mulan becomes the only one to climb the pole and retrieve the arrow, you don't see a change in Li Shang's facial expression when he sees her at the top ("That's just one test, let's see how well you do the others")

As a kid mulan was my favorite disney film and not because that was the only disney dvd at my cousins house. this part of the film was so inspiring especially the last part. and s ive gotten older I think one of the main reasons I love this film is that shows that regardless of how many centuries have past since the period in which the original story took place (aside from the fact that the story of mulan may have been just a myth), theres so many life truths that have not changed. from "a girl worth fighting for" to "Ill make a make a man out of you" this film addresses a lot serious topics for a kid movie, and Im pretty sure this film inspired my deep love of history and classical literature as an adult. whenever I revisit this scene I notice something different, but what I really love about this segment is mulan is getting a reality check about what it really means to be man. its not cutting your hair, and putting on some uniform. I also like how the song lists a couple qulities that men are known for. so you could say this song isnt just for the little girls but also for boys as well.
Interestingly enough as an east african kid i felt icky watching alladin thinking it wouldve been the disney movie i would relate to the most but I as horribly mistaken. I wouldnt be able to understand why I hated alladin but loved mulan until college when I would study orientalism. the thing I hated about alladin (aside from the anti-arab stereotypes) out of all of the disney prncesses jasmine was the only one that was sexualized. it just highlights this colonial obsession with uncoverig and portraying muslim women as opressed but also these mischevious sexual creatures. like which one is it? and dont get me started on jasmines outfit. like what is the takeaway message to young girls here.
but anyway mulan and hercules are the best disney movies
