What made the original Mulan movie so superior to the newer live action one is that it actually showed the value of hard-work, brotherhood/sisterhood, determination, and adversity. It's not just about a girl-boss who's automatically perfect at everything and can never be bested or have anything taught to her by a man. It's a realistic story that shows how strength of mind and spirit can supersede physical limitations when you want something bad enough and are willing to put in the time and effort to do so. And that you don't have to try to weaken or stupefy others to make yourself feel strong and empowered. I really wish Disney would go back to making movies like this.
Ok but the new one wasn't bad either. It shows if you have hidden talents, don't be afraid to show them. Both were right and neither are more superior than the other.
“Heed my every order and you might survive.” This sent shivers down my spine thinking of the soldier that goes to war not knowing whether they will live or die
That hasn't changed too much for some branches of the military, except they've found new ways to deny survivors after-care for doing unconscionable things on the front lines.
I like how this song( and the movie in general) empowers women by showing we can fight too while also respecting and showing how hard it is to be a man
Watching back this scene, I realize that the last time the chorus sings "Be a man" is exactly when she was being dismissed and failed to climb the pole once more. And so it begins "Be a man": Is not about being fast, strong, agile, nor skilled. It's about never giving up.
He's speaking of 2 different options. Heeding his every order -> might survive, since even weak soldiers can follow orders, but may still not live. Every show I watched growing up is what my kids will watch. All the old Disney movies are the greatest. None of the remade versions ever come close especially this new mulan
Old middle school teacher played this shit on the first day of 8th grade and during graduation whispered "Don't die on me out there, soldier." With that, I almost thought my 9th grade principal was about to play "A whole new world" or something at orientation.
The songs works so well because the writer(s) actually understands what can make a great man. The world would be a better if more men aspired to model the virtues espoused in these lyrics: Strong, capable, self controlled, unflappable, disciplined, and with a purpose directed toward the good and protection of those around him.
I haven't watched the movie, but I heard that it's controversial because of how lousy the Chinese propaganda was. Maybe this music cheers me up, even the ones with Filthy Frank.
This song always reminds me of my father who raised me he wasn't my biological dad but he was the only family I knew he was extremely hard on me and had me train in all sports and martial arts and super strict trying to teach me lessons in life. When I was a kid I always thought of him as someone I feared and was my greatest enemy As a man now I realized he was actually my best friend and I'm grateful for all the lessons I finally realized he was the one who believed in me and my potential when no one else did
As an African kid 😂 who hadn't really grasped the English language when I watched this great movie I always misheard him sing "DID THEY SEND ME DOLLARS, WHEN I ASKED FOR POUNDS??????...OMG🤦😂😂😂
The scene montage for this song does a great of job showing how one's potential can be a threat to others, as the other trainees sabotaged Mulan every chance they got. Another interesting note is that even though Mulan becomes the only one to climb the pole and retrieve the arrow, you don't see a change in Li Shang's facial expression when he sees her at the top ("That's just one test, let's see how well you do the others")
Literarily when I was in middle school we were doing a project and I said okay let's get down to business and someone shouted out TO DEFEAT THE HUNS!!!!!!! I miss middle school 😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢
No, they didn't. She snuck away from home, pretended to be a male to take her fathers place, went to war, disobeyed orders, and sacrificed her whole team to trap the bad guys in an avalanche. Today, she would be put in the briggs for treason and impersonation of a soldier. Shang wasn't askin that as a literal question, he was askin because the soldiers were sad, pathetic, wastes if space, excuses for soldiers.
Will: BE A MAN Percy: we must be swift as a coursing river Will: BE A MAN Jason: with all the force of a great typhoon Will: BE A MAN Leo: with all the force of a raging fire Nico:.... MYSTERIOUS AS THE DARK SIDE OF THE MOON If you get this you are amazing

I like how he actually gave her a chance to go home (instead of executing her as an example) but she wanted to make her family proud and persevered instead
I never realized as a kid how much this song and "Honor To Us All" highlights the struggle for men and women on society. Women HAVE to be gentleand beautiful but men have to be strong and maintain their emotions. We see Mulan struggle with the matchmaker and automatically associate "ugh beauty standards, f that" But even though she succeeds with the men, i can't imagine the expectation placed on the rest of the men who have to be cool, calm, and collected ALL THE TIME.
My favorite song in the entire movie, I have no memories seeing this movie back then, but I guess I really enjoyed it as an adult! Also, gotta say I like this guy's singing voice...

@SkyStormSong In my case, I'm the bone who changed schools. Now I just text random lines to my friend, in the ten minutes that our breaks correspond, and the group at my old school tries and usually success to name the song it is from.

The world would be a better if more men aspired to model the virtues espoused in these lyrics: Strong, capable, self controlled, unflappable, disciplined, and with a purpose directed toward the good and protection of those around him.
maybe that's the reason this song is empowering without any hint of gender bias
the movie say that women can have the positive qualities of men
Yes. Roles of a woman is different from a man. She inspires him.
@@ashleykeith4064 In that era, being a woman in China was a total hell
@@queenarialya woman and men are different woman can only compare to men in their natural attributes by diminishing men
Man, who else is here to cleanse their mind after the "totally unexpected" borefest that was the live action remake?
omg yes! i'm about halfway through and the live action is SOOO BORING !!! OMG!!! And Mulan is reallly unlikeable!!! She has no personality !
I haven't watched the movie, but I heard that it's controversial because of how lousy the Chinese propaganda was.
Maybe this music cheers me up, even the ones with Filthy Frank.
Wasnt the live action controversial for multiple reasons?
@Cherry Mae Raviz I couldn't agree with you more they're ruining Mulan
@Cherry Mae Raviz tl;dr
My favorite Disney song from my favorite Disney movie. Love it! Especially the little a Capella part at the end there.
Ariah Mitchell that beat drop
Ariah Mitchell Same I love this song
Best song ever
Mine is reflection that mulan sings
Same!!!
This song always reminds me of my father who raised me he wasn't my biological dad but he was the only family I knew he was extremely hard on me and had me train in all sports and martial arts and super strict trying to teach me lessons in life.
When I was a kid I always thought of him as someone I feared and was my greatest enemy
As a man now I realized he was actually my best friend and I'm grateful for all the lessons
I finally realized he was the one who believed in me and my potential when no one else did
What are you yapping about, lil bro?

Everytime I listen to this song I always want to do something impossible and incredible.
It's not impossible. You just have to work toward it.
Join the Marines. (Tho this song will never be Cadence, YOU KNOW WHY) should you have the march ability, the PWAT is doable.)

29 years old and for some reason while I'm at work this song just pops into my head and I can't get it out so here I am
My friend once said "Aren't you too old to be watching Disney movies?"
I replied "And Aren't you too old to be watching this with me?"
+Atomic Adventures omg I was singing this and my friend said you like that? And I said "you wouldn't stop talking about the movie for two years..."
+Kim Zab I said "Not man enough?" Always seems to work.
+Atomic Adventures I would have responded differently...
"Dishonor on your whole family! Dishonor on you! Dishonor on your cow!"

This is the song I play whenever I have a lot of homework
+Dayna Morris Doing that right now.

+Dayna Morris i play it on games when im getting ready for a boss fight
+the truthful critic LOVE your profile pic and i do the same
I love how in my playlist you could go from death metal to mulan
Same
Funnily enough I just saw a metal cover of this song
The scene montage for this song does a great of job showing how one's potential can be a threat to others, as the other trainees sabotaged Mulan every chance they got. Another interesting note is that even though Mulan becomes the only one to climb the pole and retrieve the arrow, you don't see a change in Li Shang's facial expression when he sees her at the top ("That's just one test, let's see how well you do the others")
Literarily when I was in middle school we were doing a project and I said okay let's get down to business and someone shouted out

"Did they send me daughters when I asked for sons?" Um... yes. Yes, they did.
Alyssa Thatcher guys are strong
No, they didn't. She snuck away from home, pretended to be a male to take her fathers place, went to war, disobeyed orders, and sacrificed her whole team to trap the bad guys in an avalanche. Today, she would be put in the briggs for treason and impersonation of a soldier. Shang wasn't askin that as a literal question, he was askin because the soldiers were sad, pathetic, wastes if space, excuses for soldiers.
The whole point of the movie is overcoming sexism...

"Did they send me daughters when i asked for sons?" Uhmm..... well in mulan's case yes
i mean, he had no sons to send in that case
Yeah, but they didn't send her. She sent herself.
