The lyrics are so meaningful, it's a plea for love and peace. An anti-war message written in 1970 during the Vietnam war when many young American men, over 50,00, died and young people were protesting and picketing against the war. It's considered one of the best songs every written/performed. His cry "What's going on" is still relevant today!

My parents were in the Navy during this time; that's where I was born and spent the first two years if life. My parents used to ask me certain things to see if I happened to remember certain events. But my memory didn't go that far back as a toddler.
This was written in 1970 and the whole country was in turmoil, it was sung directly to our soldiers in Vietnam, beautiful and powerful song

One of the most amazing things about this song is the bass line, by the legendary James Jamerson.
According to other musicians on the session, they originally had another bass player on the session, but it just wasn't working.
So, they sent someone to find Jamerson.
He'd been drinking, since it was his night off, and when they eventually got him to the studio, he was so drunk he couldn't sit on his stool.
So, he layed flat on his back, on the studio floor.
Someone held up a sheet with chords written out, and he improvised this gorgeous, lyrical, rhythmically rich and dynamic masterpiece of a bass line.
All while so drunk he couldn't sit on a stool without falling off.
Genius.
U can tell a great song wen it's just as relevant today as the day it came out..simply a masterpiece

This whole album is legendary. Another gem of this is Mercy mercy me. At least as well played andcsung with a strong environmental message.
Marvin (like Stevie) oozes soul.....you can't teach that, you have to have talent and then you have FEEL it. Eminem, Stevie, Marvin....all from Detroit and that is my home town. This is mainly about the Vietnam war, but it also may refer to the 1967 riots in Detroit. I saw the results of that in the 60's (yes, that old) and this song brings back bittersweet memories.
Another one that passed way to young, what a voice.. You need to listen to RUSH, Natural Science. WHY? The lyrics and the most influential drummer in rock history. Neil Peart, also wrote those lyrics and most of the lyrics for all RUSH songs. The man was a true genius. That is why you need to listen…..

I'd like to see you do some Alice In Chains. They are from the Seattle grunge era along with Pearl Jam, Nirvana and Soundgarden. The lead vocalist Layne Staley was a beast. RIP Layne. His vocal ability was such that you didn't just hear him you felt him in your soul and if you didn't you must not have one. Such a powerful, well controlled and unique voice. the best live is from Live At The Moore, Man In A Box, Bleed The Freak and my fav Love Hate Love. This whole album is worth a listen. This refers to Vietnam war. Marvin came home from war to a mess in his home country of race wars and poverty. He wrote and produced the whole album in Belgium (Funny, that, eh?) by himself playing different instruments and backup singing. The man was a genius. 🇨🇦💯👍

At 19 I was waiting for my turn to die, and I wasn't the youngest. The 1st time I heard this song I was in a s#ithole firebase in Viet Nam. Of 200 guys IDK if any of us volunteered, or thought we would live to see the end of the war. My bud got this cassette tape sent to him from home. We listened continuously on a small tape player. 60+ years later every time I hear this album I cry. Not for the friends I lost but because I survived. I so appreciate your innocent and honest perspective. I only wanted to give some context to the album and expose who his audience was. one of the most important songs of the 20th century. This broke “Black radio” just like Dylan broke “white radio” with conscious lyrics and longer song times. As with most other things in the states Black artists weren’t afforded the opportunity to speak their minds like white artists for almost a decade after white artists got that freedom. James Brown deserves plenty of credit and so does Aretha, but this is the breakthrough. This pretty much killed the 3 minute love song at Motown forever.
