When he started sining "save the children" on my first listen i laughed, but he kept singing and telling you the truth and you realized how serious he is and unashamed he is and i started to cry this album wrecks you
In my opinion, calling this album a masterpiece is barely doing justice. Marvin Gaye was and always will be, the King of Soul. "What's Going On" is the most relevant album to date! This is what music is really all about!
Ingmar Fris I would consider Sam Cooke as folk music. It doesn't have the sultry string sections and piano flourishes that soul has. Sam Cooke is the King Of Folk though.
I consider this "album" one long song, considering how each track flows from one to another perfectly and how similar each individual movement/song sounds in relation with all of the others. Definitely a 10/10 classic and one of the greatest socially conscious records in the history of music.
Speaking as an atheist or whatever, I still find God is Love to be supremely spiritually uplifting. To quote Anthony, I "get behind" the religious sentiment and sincerity of MG's lyrics and vocal delivery.
DarrenBonJovi We don't have to believe in scripture to appreciate the ideas and concepts behind religious love and the committment to making this world a better place. I'm not religious, either, but I do believe in empathy and love. We all need a little more of that.
@@Spaccaspecchi I think that's the magic behind it: Gaye's sincerity reaches us regardless of any belief systems and thus overcomes the hurdle of being corny.
I started listening to this album at 11:00 last night and listened to it straight through. I had my headphones on and lights out just meditating on the gorgeous voice and devestatingly powerful lyrics. Will be listening to it all the way through again today!
I got a degree in audio production. Audio Technica ATH M50x is what you're going to find in a lot of recoding studios. Will cost $140 and will last you over a decade.
I listened to the album for a music class and I'm glad I found it. It spoke me and it made my sadness go away, it was so real. It made me feel like there is so much to life than what I have been worrying about. Marvin Gaye is the best.
Best album ever, i don't even got the words to talk about it, it so smooth that it sounds like if it was an only song of 37 minutes long. Everything is in here, war, love, God, feelings, social issues even talking about his self and the troubles that he has lived and seen. Marvin has just done the most perfect album, he fused with his music, and i'm not even talking about the arrangements, harmonies and things everything was under his control... Flying high in a frieeendly sky, so sad that i can't speak as freely as i speak in french ahaha
The bass on this album is just amazing...James Jamerson & Bob Babbitt shared bass duties and both did an incredible job...James' bass line on What's Happening Brother has to be one of the most sophisticated and beautiful bass lines ever recorded...
Listen again. This whole album is from the prospective of a Vietnam veteran home from war. The take a second listen, and you will be able to tell that EVERY track is from the prospective of what this kid is dealing with once home from war.
I’d say it’s the most socio-political masterpiece of an album ever made, you wouldn’t have to pimp a butterfly without albums like this. Like I have nothing bad to say about an album like this, so passionate and soul filled
My favourite tracks are Right On, Inner City Blues, What's Going On and Mercy Mercy Me. This is one of the most structurally dense albums I've heard. I'ts layer after after layer of sounds. Vocals, choirs, rhythm section with atmospheric basslines, jazzie drums and electric guitar, latin percussion, flute, sexy saxophone, piano, and above all that, an orchestra, and finally to complete the dish a few drops of xylophone notes here and there. Guys, there is music for entertainment, for relaxation, for fun, to dance, to lift the mood. But this album is a work of art.
If your a bass player, you can only marvel at the genius of James Jamerson's bass playing on this album. Gotta give props to Bob Babitt for his contribution on the last 4 tracks. Also this album has arguably the greatest opener and closer of any album. The closing track 'Inner City Blues' is one of the most timeless grooves ever laid down, in my humble opinion. Incredible grooves underneath messages which speak to the heart of humanity and are even more relevant today than back in 1971.
it's actually so sad that this album is more relevant today than it was back then. I love this album. Might be my favourite album of all time. Whenever I hear the first tones of the title track, my soul just gets lifted. This was definetely influenced by God. Never ever had I heard an album so heavenly sounding. His harmonies are something else.
The album sat on my shelf for the better part of a year before I listened to it intentionally. Such a beautiful album that is scary relevant to today. I think there should be a place for this kind of honest yet hopeful music in everyone's collection. Essential listening.
Learning the story behind the making of the album and its historical context lends even greater appreciation. In no way, shape or form is this album critically overated. From a purely aesthetic perspective, it is one of the most rewarding albums to listen to. And it doesn't drag on. Its duration is short of 35 minutes yet its emotional range is vast, seemingly limitless. I've been listening to this album for more than half my life, and it feels just as fresh everytime I play it.
Marvin made what is possibly the most sincere, heavenly, honest and uplifting album of all time. There's not single thing wrong with this album. I've heard MANY albums of every genre of music and era; none one of them carry quiet the sincerity, beauty and flawlessnes of this album. This is without question the BEST piece of music ever conceived by man.
This is my favorite album all times my mom told me when I was born she played what's going on in her stomach and he's my favorite R&B artist and soul artist of all time
review grace by jeff buckley, its amazing. i think the amount of influence its has on so many bands and musicians today cant be ignored. I wanna see you're take on it.
I'm with you, Grace is probably the greatest unknown if not the greatest album of all time, so many sounds and dynamics plunged into 10 tracks, and Jeff's vocals are beyond beautiful, flying from lows to highs, I would take up he was a better vocalist than Freddie Mercury, which is saying something. Anyways, it's good to know I'm not the only one out here that appreciates it.
Melon doesn’t like Jeff Buckley, unfortunately. He’s one of my favorite artists ever but some of the studio polished versions of the songs on there falter compared to some of the live versions, especially Grace and Mojo Pin. However the studio version of Lover You Should’ve Come Over is my favorite song of all time so I definitely have high regards for this album. That’s just my two cents.
The What's Going On album came out in 1971, to be accurate. I know, because I bought the album when I was in Jr. High. One of the greatest albums of all time! A classic and landmark, was relevant then, and is just as relevant now!
When I came to check out your next review, an expression of utter astonishment and joy spread across my face, I wish I could have took a picture. Nice pick for a classic review Anthony.
Man I'm so stubborn with music sometimes. I hear one song for 30 seconds and immediately am like "nah". Heard "What's Going On" and was like "wtf is this?". I gave this a full and honest listen today and I absolutely COMPLETELY understand now and am just ashamed in myself for sleeping on this album for so long. Better late than never though 🤷♂
The "smooth saxophone flourishes" that you mention were recorded by a Detroit musician (yes, some major Motown players were featured on this album) by the name of Larry Nozero. He died of lung cancer about 10 years ago, but was still teaching, playing in clubs, and keeping music fresh and clean as the voice on Gaye's LP up to the end. Sometimes, the story of an album lives beyond its recording, release, or prolonged sales figures.
Sarah Vaughan and many other great artists across varying genres. The production and arrangements are timeless, and the singing is as good as it ever got. Its as close to perfect as an album ever got. It was overlooked by the grammys in the year that Carol King made her singer/songwriter masterpiece album, Tapestry. Also it was released in the same year as Sly & The Family Stone's 'There A Riot Going On', which translates as the anwser to the question Marvin raised.
Good critque. Im from this era, and soul just would not be the same without musicians like Marvin Gaye and Al green, both of them the fathers of soul to me. Just beautiful music period.
Took the opportunity to buy this album on vinyl a little while ago. One of the best buys I've ever made personally. Not a day goes by where that record is not on my turn table
Excellent video Anthony. One thing you missed is James Jamerson played bass on a number of tracks and he has to be one of the greatest and smoothest players of all time
cant believe this is half a century old. the world needs to come together, it seems like we’re blinded by our own poor judgment. i hope people can hear what Marvin’s got to say and make the world a better place from here on

Marvin Gaye and this album is fantastic and i love that you picked it. now do some Donny Hathaway maybe?
Also, What's Going On is my favorite record of Marvin's. It really shows his great vocal range and power as well as his lyrical ability. It also is one of the best albums that showcase how together the Funk Brothers really were.

It set the template for the direction of soul music in the 70's. Stevie Wonder still considers it his favorite album and says it inspired him to take his music in the direction he went during he classic run of albums from 1972's Music Of My Mind to 1976's landmark 'Songs In The Key Of Life'. Many artists from all genres have covered the songs on the album, including Aretha Franklin on her 1972 masterpiece Gospel album 'Amazing Grace', Donny Hathaway, Quincy Jones, Ella Fitzgerald...
It's odd that I stumbled across your coverage of this particular Marvin Gaye album. I had read a write-up about the latest Justin Timberlake album and my retort to that article, in comment, was that Justin's album reminds me of three other albums in similar ways: "Seeds of Love" by Tears For Fears", "Ahh...The Name is Bootsy Collins and "What's Going On" by Marvin Gaye. I enjoy youtube show and your approach to music. It is fun, refreshing and should be added as tv segments. Thank you sir.
and the late David Van Depitte translated Marvins vocal sketches into some of the most beautiful string arrangements to grace a pop or soul record. The lyrics and messages were all essentially autobiographical from his persective (What's Going On, Flying High) and the perspective of his brother (Hey Brother) who sent him letters while he was fighting in the Vietnam War and informed by his faith (God is Love, Wholy Holy).
this is one of my favorite albums..and play it on my record player. It's a beautiful album cover and there's a song where he sings about going home to his mom and his father..it's sad since it was his father that killed him.Great album!!!
Because it propelled psychedelic rock/pop music and it's considered the album that defines the "summer of love" Not to mention the lyrics are very good.
not to give away my age or anything, but I saw Marviiiiiinnnnn in concert in Ft. Lauderdale back in the 1970s -- he was awesome and is on the permanent playlist in this household.

Its the best album i've ever heard (just about 1 month ago)... one thing that i can tell is: if you listened the last shadow puppets, and you liked it, here is you're "god".
Sampled so much in hip hop that most people have heard parts of this album without knowing it
Funkadelic, Isley Brothers, James Brown mainly cuz Funky Drummer was the most sampled song in history, Sly Stone, Isaac Hayes and Miles Davis too.
Can you give an example plz?
Not from what's going on but "I want you" is sampled by K Lamar on "The heart part 5", very nice sample imo
marvin gaye definitely gets sampled but honestly whats going on isn't really sampled that often. still a 10/10 album tho
Any songs in particular? I personally haven't heard any sampling this album

Because it propelled psychedelic rock/pop music and it's considered the album that defines the "summer of love" Not to mention the lyrics are very good.

just bought this album on vinyl without ever hearing it, but it’s gotta be good it gets so much positive feedback, and Rolling Stones have it as their top 1 out of the 500 greatest albums of all time
