- A playthrough of Playmates Interactive's 1996 3D versus-fighting game for the Sony PlayStation, Battle Arena Toshinden 2.
The video shows the "Full Battle" mode played through on difficulty level six with Kayin, and includes the secret end boss battle against Vermilion.
Poor, poor developer Tamsoft. Their PlayStation mega-hit launch title Toshinden wowed everyone just a year earlier with its super-smooth goraud-shaded 3D fighter. It was a huge system seller, and made money hand-over-fist. So why did we not hear more about its direct sequel(s)?
Well, by 1996, the gaming landscape had shifted pretty dramatically. Studios had their first projects out, and now having been acclimated to making games in 3D and being armed with more knowledge of the 32-bit hardware, game quality started improving in leaps-and-bounds seemingly overnight.
The fighter genre saw this as much as any other: just look at what Namco managed. The original 1995 Tekken grew into 1996's Tekken 2 and Soul Blade, and calling the improvements massive would be quite an understatement. Sega did much the same from Virtua Fighter to VF2. Tamsoft didn't quite follow this same path, though - Battle Arena Toshinden 2 wasn't bad, but the biggest selling-point of the original - its graphics - had been since been surpassed, and BAT2's just couldn't match the quality of other studios' outputs. They are quite a marked improvement over the original, but they were no longer good enough to distract from the same creaky fighting engine driving the action. There were a couple of characters and moves added, but the game didn't change very much at all beyond its facelift. People moved on.
Well, I'm glad that I didn't. I had this one for Windows 95 and I thought it was fantastic. I didn't like the style as much as the first one - it's even tackier now than before - and the soundtrack was somewhat less awesome, but it was still a solid 3D fighter with easy-to-pull specials, good looking character models, and smooth animation. The absurd Engrish phrases and grunts still abound, and the awkward camera creates some really amusing moments when it gets stuck, which is something it's quite prone to doing, especially during win poses.
If you liked Toshinden, even after it was killed by later 3D fighters, you'll find more of the same to like in this one. If the instant you saw Tekken 2 you promptly forgot this one existed, you're probably better off leaving it that way.
I, for one, am a fan.

The soundtrack to this game is just so badass!!!. Duke and Eiji's Theme have never been topped in a fighting game
Abosultely agree best fighter OST.
Im just here for Sofia
And ellis
Fun facts, stages of Toshinden 2...
Mount Bandai (Eiji)
Bronx (Kayin)
Aqua Disco (Sofia)
Grand Canyon (Rungo)
Mihan Banquet Hall (Fo)
Dojo (Mondo)
Rambert Manor (Duke)
Istanbul (Ellis)
Sea of Japan (Gaia)
Harbour (Tracy)
Ruin (Chaos)
Cathedral (Uranus)
Alternate Dimension (Master)
Tower of Babel (Sho)
The only one that is unknown is Vermilion's stage, possibly due to the fact that he's a guest character from Toshinden 3.
Lol to that intro! Why only 3 characters had their "real" version? Too expensive to hire the rest of the crew? Lol, awesome game, brings back good memories.
Of all the dozens if not hundreds of hours I spent on this game as a kid (it was one of my 2 first games when I got a PS) I never faced Vermillion or Sho, much less unlocked them. Thanks for this video.
I remember playing this as a kid and seeing those actors in the suits blew my mind as an kid. Not sure why exactly but just seeing the real thing amazed me as a kid. It must just be because we get really sucked into the reality and when we see that we think it’s actually real. Whereas now as an adult I’m just thinking there’s an Asian dude in cosplay🤣
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 ON GOD !!!!
It certainly lacks the wow factor that the first Toshinden had, but if you enjoyed the original, there's plenty more in BAT2 to have fun with.
NintendoComplete i bought this last week as a bargain but i cant find a way to save my game? Do you know if its possible to save?
On the contrary, this was my favorite of all the Toshinden games. I just wish they had more costumes and cutscenes, AND that they kept these same graphics (especially the ring out stages) on Toshinden 3
I remember playing this game with my sister, and our cousins, back when I was around 5-6? And we would make fun of our oldest cousin “look, sofia’s looking at you!!!” The good old days.
I remember playing this & playing it on the demo discs on PlayStation back in the day. I wanted to play as Ellis I thought she was just so fascinating back then & still think she’s so exciting now 🌸💚✨
the best bat game by far such solid game play and a massive improvement on the mechanics from the first. bat2 one of the most underrated games out there
Totally agree!
1:21 - goodbye childhood innocence.
Nintendo Complete, lets not forget the Killer Instinct franchise was resurrected 20 years later. We as passioante fans dont need to fear that Toshinden 1 or 2 (the sequels suck) will be lost to obscurity-it may well be revived in much the same fashion as MK, Killer Instinct, and even Street Fighter, Which dominate the fighting genre as of now. Tekken has been consistent over the years so of course theyre still up there too.
Ah! What great memories of that time. 😎💿🎮🎶
I always loved hearing Eiji's theme.
Lol, that laugh of Sofia cracks me up every time.
Me & my bro always used to mimic her & chaos 😂😂😂😂
1:22 Sofia is gorgeous, i'm not sure who's model's name.
Maybe not the best graphics, but still my favourite fighter of all time.
Very impressive graphics for 1996. The rolling waves in the first stage were impressive. Too bad the frame rate is so low.
Yeah kinda interesting effect. Too bad the characters are so stiffy, their animations aren't so great.
It would be so epic if they made a newer version of this game!
My favorite as a kid!
Masters background and vermilion's music used to creep me out when I was a kid
I used to love going through the backgrounds looking for easter eggs and such.
4:11 LMAO
Even Super Mario Odyssey Should've used that move on Bowser.
So lame that the stage music restarts with every round. That always bothered me the most.
But thanks for not stretching this to 16:9 and having decent gameplay!
TOTALLY AGREE MR. SISON
That intro was the bees knees. ❤️❤️
Damn, Sofia is smokin' as usual, whether she is live action or cg.
I came here for Sofia's laugh
I wish it would've been played through in 'hard mode'. In that way you would see all characters use their abilities, show they potential and unleash their inner strength (and game voices)
the best toshinden
Oh god that opening FMV... who thought that looked good?
I'm more concerned with the fact that Tamsoft couldn't make up its mind about what to use for the opening. I guess if you can't decide between using in-engine graphics, pre-rendered CG, or live action, JUST COMBINE THEM! So seamless!
14 year-old me thought it was the tightest shit ever and so I'm not ashamed to say that it still gives me a bit of a charge
@@ThingsOnDemand haha awesome
This OP looks pretty cool, even now!
Does anyone still play this game? I've never really known anyone who played this game except me and my sister.
I just got into this series a while ago, I got 1,2 & 3. Very clunky and a little slow but hella fun haha
@Auf TH-cam nicht an Politik interessiert Exactly, to me it plays like Street Fighter so when I looked at the inputs I was like "I got this shit" lol
I actually played it on my good old PS3 yesterday. I still have a couple of PS1 classics like that, that just want to be played again. The difference now that I'm an adult is that I'm less patient with these games and only play for about half an hour. Just a bit of relaxing time with a touch of nostalgia.
I do.
I had the first version and it was awesome ! Played as fo and best the game for ps1 id say.
This looks too ehhh 1 looked better and played better
1:31 awkward blink yes!
9:49 10:27 This dude needs to chill out 😂 What did that girl do to him
At 8:31, Chaos does a little jig and Kayin cheers him on.
lol "YAAAAAAAIIIIIIIII!!!"
OMG I REMEMBER THIS !!!
How do you get to the fight against Vermillion? I only could get the final fight against Sho.
I love this game.
I prefer the first Toshinden, but this is also fun at parties. lol
So many good memories
bloody love this game but can't get the music tracks to work right in epsxe or any emulator for that matter :(. A little LOL moment from when I was 15 playing this if you play as Duke and knock someone out of the ring, sounds like he's saying "NAHHH FUCKING ANGEL" which of course is wrong but that used to crack me up. This is the most simplistic weapon fighter out there but there is some fun to be had and one of the best soundtracks of it's genre. A unpolished gem!
+TheDemoniusX Mednafen is really solid on PS1 emulation, have you tried that?
No I haven't but I probably should. I assume I have to covert the sound files. I have the annoying mp3/iso set up :(.
TheDemoniusX Yeah, I doubt it accepts those
Mooby CDRom PLugin v.2.8 is the plugin to get CDDA files to work. AKA Redbook Audio.
Works Great and even Mortal Kombat Trilogy
I'm sure it was hilarious when you knocked out Uranus and thought he said that.. about his own mother to
.....YEEEAAAAHHHH!!
Rofl
Anyone else notice that the health bar is pretty much nonexistent? Literally winning with like 5 hits 🤣.
Oh wow that FMV intro is so cool. I want to play this. I also think this game could have been on N64 (it was on Saturn) because of that system’s extreme lack of J-Fighters on it like why isn’t there Street Fighter Alpha 3 or Dead or Alive on it? Man PlayStation (the entire PS line in fact) and Saturn get all the good fighters while N64 players were stuck with the inferior ones. Why didn’t Tamsoft put it out on N64? Nintendo would have been the publisher.
Because N64 sucked
4:18 lol
I don't think I ever made it past Uranus
Step in late! Sonic Thwrust! Hell's Gate!
Ellis: "Eeeeehh?"
When i was kid i thought its " captain lake" , "vodca" , "captainnnn" " hell open "😅
i remember playing this on win95 or dos. there was 2 auto combo buttons and i just used duke lol
looks like i played toshinden 1 not this one. no wonder this didnt look that familiar.
Didnt the old guy with claws fart fire?
What happened to Kayin's Scottish accent?
The soundtrack isn't as good as the first game, but I still enjoyed fighting my friends in this game quite a bit.
rcblazer they redid him to be English
One time, I accidentally mispronounced his name as Kakyoin. XD
I can tell you were distracted by Sofia. The first round at least. Lol jk, good job man
Lol I was just trying to figure out where the boobs came from, because she certainly didn't have them in the FMV scene.
NintendoComplete 🤣
This series started out in PSX and died with the PSX
Hanferd There was one on the Wii...
... the Wii? Let me remember again... oh yeah Nintendo Wii from 2006.... That explain why I didn't know or don't remember.
nope, nope,NOPE! While it's made by tamsoft (Same who did toshinden psx) has NO relation to the psx games and if you asked me.... it was bloody awful! Truly another shovelware to add to the over abundance of it on Wii which is a shame because there was unmet potential there.
1:21 She’s gotta be in her 50’s by now😅
Pretty boring to watch when the game difficulty isn’t high enough to enjoy watching other characters pull off moves
Nah you just really picky
thats a whole lot of legs!
I wonder who those people standing in Vermilion's background were.
_ Toshinden 2 :
Summer 1996 in' France.
"Sonic Thwrust!"
YEA!!!
part 2 was the best.
who's the model that played Sofia?
wonder what she's doing today

By the looks of her, I'd guess picking up her Valtrex prescription. Lmao or doing meth. I love how gross Wendy is.
@@jonathanosterman7530 ahahah I nearly regret clicking on the link
@@NintendoComplete 🤣😂🤣
wow flashback!
I got clickbaited.
Juegazo!
This game is not as good as the first. Part one was great because it was colorul and the soundtrack was gereat, But this game just had a Intro Screen Live action and thats it. No Ending either, Then
The Color on the game is Tamed. The Select Screen was the only thing bright about this game. Also I played the Arcade version and PC.
