Ron actually didn't tell his mom about his broken wand because he presumed she would refuse to get him a new one. It was just Ron thinking like a 12-year-old that his parents would be vindictive over him misbehaving.

I think that it was more guilt and shame than anything else. He lost the car, humiliated his father, needlessly risked his own life and broke the law. Asking his mother to buy him a wand (or even mentioning that it was damaged) was too shameful for Ron to consider.
Fortunately, helping rescue Ginny was enough to wipe the slate clean.

    • @chester6514
      @chester6514 หลายเดือนก่อน +11

I agree. If Molly or Arthur had found out about the wand they would’ve immediately got him a new one (even if it was second hand, just like his current one). I thought they had brought this idea up before actually, and they seem to have forgotten talking about because it’s not necessarily a ‘convenient plot hole’ if you just understand that Ron never told his parents about the broken wand.

    • @kiranicole2096
      @kiranicole2096 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

Which is really sad actually, because for how loving and wonderful Molly is, I can see how her reaction towards the Weasley boys after they initially rescue Harry would act as a deterrent for Ron asking for anything from her. She yells at her sons for, what was it, 20+ minutes? and then has them outside doing chores the rest of the day.
We see Molly as this supportive, motherly, do-anything-for-her-kids parent that would have 100% gotten Ron a new wand. But Ron most likely sees the fiercely overprotective, sent-him-a-howler, poor woman who doesn't even remember that he hated corned beef sandwiches his first trip to Hogwarts. Ron saw a mom who neither couldn't nor wouldn't help him.

I also think Madame Pince announced the library was closing either due to the game or that they just found Ginny. So Hermione was in a rush to take the info so she ripped out the page (because she couldn't check it out) and wrote down pipes because she had a brain wave. Penelope was also in the library and they left together which Pince locked up, and took the mirror out and bam.

There is also a line from Myrtle that “it took them hours to find my body, I know I waited.” And after that she did haunt her bullies at their houses and at the wedding until the ministry got involved and she was restricted from doing such. About Ron's broken wand, even though wands choose the wizard, you can use wands that haven't chose you. (Ron's wand is a hand me down after all) After the slug incident there should have been a line about Ron using some basic temp wand until the end of the year, with his damaged one kept in his dorm. Then, when they go to confront Lockart, Ron accidentally grabs his busted wand. Seems like that would make more sense narrative wise while still allowing the Lockhart to Obliviate himself later.

I always thought that after Hermione realized what the monster was and then worked out how it was getting around she then realized that she was pretty much alone in the castle and was an easy target. Actually, I think Harry & Ron could still figure out the eyes even without getting the info from Hermione - because they specifically want to ask Myrtle HOW she died. And Myrtle says, essentially, “I saw the eyes and I died” - they might have questioned it more, if they didn’t already know it was a basilisk, but Myrtle would have likely been insulted and insisted no, she doesn’t remember being attacked she just saw the eyes and died. So they’d be warned. They may not be 100% sure, but I can absolutely see the conclusion “let’s not look it in the eyes, just in case” even if they think it’s hypnotizing or something.

I think, since Rowling went to school for Classics, the 'beam' of the Basilisks' eye is a reference to ideas about vision in antiquity. The Roman poet Lucretius talks about people being able to see because they shoot light out of our eyes, and when it bounces off something and back into our eyes, we see the bounced-back light.

Good video as always, can't wait for next week for the name reveal. I hope you bring up Tom 'Elvis' Jedusor.
Now I have a question for you two, apologies for the length. Do you believe the founders, in addition to their objects (Sword, Locket, Diadem, and Cup) and possible secret rooms (Headmaster's room, Chamber of Secrets, Room of Requirement, and Kitchen) that each founder made an object/item to help them with running the school?
For instance, we all know the Sorting Hat is Gordic's hat and honestly, it was probably his idea. What are the chances that Helga made the Quill of Acceptance and Rowena made the Book of Admittance? And following that logic, I like to think that Salazar made the living armor. Seems on brand for him to focus on defending the school. Plus, the Basilisk is his pet and presumably the last line of defense for Hogwarts. What better way to support it in combat than with allies that it can't petrify?

Thank you guys and everyone who works so hard to put this all together, I really enjoy listening to this podcast weekly.
I never had an issue with Myrtle’s death being linked to Voldemort’s second Horcrux - the diary. The way I see it is that Voldemort, like Harry, viewed Hogwarts as a paramount aspect of who he was and what his aspirations would be. That said, at that point Tom already killed Marvolo Gaunt/Tom Riddle Sr (I tend to think it was the later which he used to transform the ring into a Horcrux) and with that event he separated himself from those which he viewed as inferior. However, the Riddles and Gaunts are inescapable aspects of his identity (his magic superiority that he got from the Gaunts and the incapacity for love that he received from being born from what was a loveless action); combined these aspects define his identity. So, although a year prior, he tried to fully embrace his Gaunt side (Ring Horcrux), he knew that something wasn’t really right. Therefore, for his next Horcrux, he chose something that perfectly aligned with who he truly was. An ordinary muggle diary that was secretly imbedded with great power that emphasizes wizard superiority, just as he is a halfblood descendent of Slytherin. Even his victim, Myrtle was the perfect fit for this, as a muggleborn standing in the way of The Chamber of Secrets she (unintentionally) served as an obstruction to Voldemort’s ideals, identity, and ego.

Ben seems to be relating "obliviate" to the word "obliterate;" rather, it's supposed to remind us of the word "oblivious." I think the fact that Lockhart yelled it is largely irrelevant. He was good at the spell, for sure, but that doesn't make yelling it more effective; and obliviators aren't "destroying" stuff, but rather making people "oblivious," as it were. That's why people's memories can technically come back, as in the case of Bertha Jorkins.

The difference is - the cave was just a cave that had one enchanted wall. No matter how subtle the traces of magic - they would be the equivalent of a car flashing long lights in the middle of the darkest night.
Hogwarts was BUILT with magic. Traces of ancient magic are literally on every single wall and item. Also, in order to enter the chamber you still need to be a parsel mouth. Wihch... do we even know a single person that isn't from Slytherin's bloodline who has that ability? When Tom writes his message he doesn't write "her body will lie in the chamber until you get it out" - it says "forever", because as far as we are aware Tom is the only wizard currently alive with that ability. Harry can only do that because Tom is a part of him, and later Ron does it by remembering the sound phonetically after hearing Harry doing it over and over again. So yeah even if they knew where it was, Dumbledore could exclusively use that toilet for the rest of his life, and he would still not be able to get inside

As a student of your work, who has watched all of your HP content and have been through the books countless times myself, my "what if" is what if Hermione had figured out that Harry needs to die to defeat Voldemort too early. Hermione always figures it out early at the end of each book and idk why HP and the DH is any different. In this situation Hermione would come to this realization while she's thinking about destroying horcruxes. It would not be that difficult for her to piece together that the reason Harry can speak parseltongue and is having this brain connection thing with Voldemort is because a piece of Voldemort's soul is stuck to Harry's soul. However, Harry is no more a horcrux than Voldemort prime is, because there is magic you need to perform to make a horcrux that did not take place after Voldemort tries to kill Harry when he was a baby. Nonetheless, it means that Harry needs to die in order to defeat Voldemort. This "what if" would take place in book 7. I kind of imagine she realizes it around the time the trio are camping when she starts getting annoyed at Harry for going off to have visions and wondering about dreams. Which is definitely too early for Harry to know and would throw a bit of a wrench into Dumbledore's big plan so I would love to hear you guys figure out how that one plays out. Also, did having a 7 piece soul ever do anything extra as opposed to having a 6 or 8 piece soul? Because at one point Voldemort definitely made a 7 piece soul whether he knew about it or not. Thank you for taking the time to read this and wishing I could send this to you by owl. Ben you are great too! GO J!

I also very much enjoy watching the J Vs Ben’s, I have to admit I tend to root for Ben just a little bit more. Plus, I also love the moments when you guys just crack each other and your staff up with your weird tangents and funny answers.
I’ve really been enjoying your Through the Griffin Door series since it has been so long since I’ve read the books. Like your dad did, my mom read most of them too me as they came out and Deathly Hallows was the longest book I had ever read on my own up to that point, so I’ve really loved getting to hear parts of the stories I haven’t for so long.
The three questions/theories I had for you guys are:
A: I know it’s a very soft and fuzzy idea that I’m sure you’ve heard before, but what if the Dursleys were actually nice to Harry and cared for him; giving him the family he needed at the time.
B: How would things have been different for Harry if was raised by his grandparents on Lily’s side. He would still end up having contact with the Dursleys, but he wouldn’t be living with them. Harry would still be protected by the Blood Protection from Lily since he would be with her parents.
C: A different twist could be that Dudley having magic would result in a reconning from Petunia and Vernon. Petunia would have to face her feelings about magic vs how much she loves her son, and Vernon would have to choose having his wife and son (whom he claims to love) or normalcy and leaving his family over hate.

I have some thoughts on the diary as a horcrux, and why it might fit the items of importance.
The fact that it is a muggle diary is immaterial to its value. This is a record made by Tom of his deciphering of the clues left to Slytherin's heirs, the unlocking of one of the secret places of power in Hogwarts, and nature of what lays within. Of course this would have value to Voldemort, as it is tangible evidence of his greatness.
And the one slain to place part of his soul into it? The first actual kill using that very power. The ultimate punctuation to this record.
On another note, I have wondered if the basilisk did kill Myrtle, or if it petrified her and Tom... simply shattered her stony form.

I'd have to double check, but I believe Harry's first use of Expelliarmus was a couple of chapters ago: around Valentine's Day, when the diary fell out of Harry's bag and Draco picked it up, I believe Harry uses Expelliarmus there. I think I remember you guys remarking on how Voldemort and Draco are both somewhat involved in both Harry's first and last times using the spell in the books - the first time, Draco is holding the diary (i.e. Voldemort), and the final time it's against Voldemort using Draco's wand.
    Edit: Yep, went and checked:
‘Hand it over, Malfoy,’ said Percy sternly.
‘When I’ve had a look,’ said Malfoy, waving the diary tauntingly at Harry.
Percy said, ‘As a school Prefect -’, but Harry had lost his temper. He pulled out his wand and shouted, ‘Expelliarmus!’ and just as Snape had disarmed Lockhart, so Malfoy found the diary shooting out of his hand into the air. Ron, grinning broadly, caught it.

In Chamber, Hermione gets petrified, and Harry and Ron go into the chamber together before getting separated (this seems to be the only instance of them all being in different places in the final act).
In Prisoner, Harry and Hermione use the time turner together, leaving Ron behind in the hospital wing.
In Goblet, Ron and Hermione are both in the audience while Harry does the final task and gets sent to the graveyard.
In Phoenix, Harry is alone again during Dumbledore and Voldemort's duel while Ron and Hermione continue to fight with the Order downstairs.
In Prince, Harry leaves Ron and Hermione to defend Hogwarts while he goes with Dumbledore.
In Hallows, Harry goes into the forest alone to face Voldemort while Hermione and Ron go to the Chamber of Secrets to harvest basilisk fangs and destroy the cup.

if she saw the eyes straight up as she said then she would have died, the baslisk's sight kills, it's just lucky that everyone else was petrified in the book

Everyone post the moment you’re most waiting for the boys to deep dive into. For me it’s in Prisoner when Snape sees Lupin on the Marauder’s map. It completely kills the theory that only Marauders can see Marauders on the map.

It doesn't kill it, just makes a pump in it, because Lupin was the one who opened the map and then didn't close it

Some personal anecdotes: There's a TV show here, where they make an escape room and then have two duos compete to clear it as quickly as possible. And the first part of the last episode was 'Harry Potter'-themed, King's Cross, Platform 9 3/4. I would have liked to see you two tackle that! Kind of wonder if you'd just breeze through... or you'd just hang around in the first part, looking for HP Easter eggs.
Just yesterday, we had a family occasion. I have an aunt whose grandson I saw reading 'Prisoner of Azkaban' last time we met. He's been really into 'Harry Potter'. She even got him those beans in all flavors. I immediately thought of you guys doing quizzes with the Wheel of Punishment ;)

Hey brother(s)!! Ive been listening to your content from the very beggining, when you were writing your quiz answers on real white boards! And im loving it so much, as a super serioud potterhead.
Im listening to your podcast and enjoying a lot!! Respect for the serious research every time!!
I've had many many questions and wonderings since ive listened to the audiobooks over 15 times, but heres an interesting one that i wonder of you guys had ever thought about -
In book 6, Dumbeldore comes to pick harry up from the dursleys. While he's sitting in their livingroom, telling harry about sirius's will, he mentions number 12 Grimmauld place and later mentions that its the order's headquorters!! Hes the secret keeper so you think hes basically gived the dursleys the secret? Or maybe muggles cant see or enter fidelius charm protected places anyway?...
im super curious to hear what you guys think!! ❤

As I was listening today, I had a thought. Would someone wearing the invisibility cloak still be petrified if they came across the basilisk?

  • @M4506b

Maybe Riddle used the basilisk and the diary because it was his first time making an additional horcrux after the ring. He knew he could do it once and get away with it, but went to Slughorn to learn about making more than one. Slughorn wasn’t exactly direct with his answer of if it were possible but deduced that it was, and maybe he thought the toll on himself would be less using a proxy, and maybe wasn’t even entirely sure it would work at all so that’s why he used the diary?
