Well everyone's talking about the fact that stalkers stalk irl, but there's also probably a direct reference to Japanese Myth as well. There's an 8 foot tall yo-kai named "Hachishaku-Sama" who lures kids from 9-11 (The girl is stated to be in elementary according to @raccoon child), and the shadow monster fits a great description of that. Hachishaku-Sama also makes noises, most notably the sound "Po", whereas the Shadow Monster actually says something... unintelligible. The words that pop up on screen when they're around is most likely the girl trying to tell herself to hide because why shouldn't she from a literal shadow monster. However, we couldn't get a clear method of how Hachishaku-Sama kills her victims, but here, we know how. At timestamp 9:53, we see that the beast supposedly claws at her before turning into... I don't even know what it is, but it sprouts an intense amount of what looks to be fire. Blood maybe?
Anyways, thanks for reading my comment about me rambling how this freaky shadow monster is kinda based off Hachishaku-Sama.

This feels more like an interactive piece of art than an actual game. What I mean by that, is that it prioritizes the atmosphere and the overall experience than creating fluid and precise gameplay. I think some of the best games in all of horror have a bit of that mentality as well - Silent Hill is remembered more for its atmosphere than for the "amazing" controls, and the gameplay is basically just an excuse to get you to explore the setting.
You explained this wonderfully. I've never played silent hill but have been listening to some ambience in the spirit of it. Sorta makes me want to give it a go. This comment reminded me of kittyhorrorshow's games. They're similar in that interactive art you mentioned :]
Good point
All games are interactive artworks including Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze
Silent Hill 2 is a masterpiece and the reason my standards for horror are almost impossibly high. I have to say even the camera and the controls added to the experience. I just loved the entire thing so much. It helps that I love exploration, atmosphere and symbolism the most and this game absolutely delivered. On the other hand the controls ruined SH4 for me. But I still speak fondly of it otherwise lol.
All video games are interactive art pieces. This is clearly a video game and a very unique one

I think the scariest part of this game is how the camera angles are positioned in a way that you can see the monster eerily trying to find you. There's just something extremely unsettling about fully being aware of where the monster is.

As an adult male, I think we don't really realize or we forget how scary the idea of someone stalking or potentially trying to abduct you truly is. I don't know if this was one of the goals of this game, but it induced a kind of panic and uneasiness that I haven't felt since I was a child. This truly makes you realize the gravity of those kinds of situations. If this was a way to make adults and men to feel that same fear, it was a success. Phenomenal
Excellent point. When you're an adult male (esp. a bigger one) you can easily forget that many people (children and many women) are surrounded by people larger than them, and are much more likely to be a target of abduction by those larger people....

i think the game was just more based on some kind of urban legend or someone just wanted to make a 'survival' horror game, but it isn't bad that you got it in this way. as a girl, i've never been like stalked or something, but one time when i was waiting for the bus with my friend a man approached us and told me to follow him, then we walked away but we knew that he was also following us for about 10 minutes... i know it probably sounds like nothing big, but this game really reminds me of that time, i was so terrified lol + i pretty often have nightmates about going home and being chased by some creepy ghost shit but i can never remember what it looked like

proof that you don't need gore or jumpscare to make a terrifying, blood-freezing horror game.
One aspect about this game that I really love is the unruly feeling that the shadow monster is always there, and while you can predict its movement and position in most instances...the combined noise, look of the screen, and the slow movement of the monster plays into the game perfectly. The limited point of view for a majority of the game adds a sense of slow suffocation from fear, which I have never seen done so well in such a short time span. Definitely goes to show that horror is not all about intrinsically placed jumpscares, but also slow lurking immediate danger...
I'm speechless. This is not just scary, it's disturbingly scary in a way that doesnt even require any jumpscare since the gameplay is nervewrecking enough. I really hope this is just a demo because this has the potential to be a fantastic longplay (maybe needs a better model for the protagonist though).
these type of games are good the way they are, i hope it's not a demo version, and i hope there's no better model for the protagonist. it's just perfect already
i just wish it was longer
The model fits the aesthethic, i would be happy If the city was big though
I wished the protagonist's model was even more lowpoly. It would capture the PS1 era perfectly.

Awesome game. Reminds me when I had to walk to the bus stop so early in the morning and it would be so dark out that I had to use a flashlight. One time I accidentally turned down the wrong street and it took me awhile to figure out where to go and the anxiety I felt at 5 in the morning is definitely captured in this game.
I think what makes this absolutely terrifying in a realistic way is the fact that it does not rely on classic psychological factors to scare you, like jumpscares, chases, etc. It is pure anxiety buildup. And the fact that you are always privy to where the entity is located makes it even scarier. Because you’re experiencing fear constantly as the viewer while simultaneously pressured to survive as the protagonist as well. Even the fact that the cameras do not necessarily make it easy to know whether you’re hiding the protagonist effectively, unlike most first-person horror games, makes it even scarier.
@Mohammad R. i might sound ignorant so pls help me out here by telling me where i can do that!
@Mohammad R. Me too
You call jumpscares a classic psychological factor? Its not even psychological, its just a cheap trick to produce a reaction. Not fear, not horror, just a normal response to a sudden loud noise after an absence of sound. Jump scares aren't even horror to be honest. Horror games are so bad right now that people tend to forget what horror truly is.
Horror is your fears entering your personal space. Lets take an example. "Fear" is a serial killer. "Horror" is when a serial killer is in your house. "Psychological horror" is when you discover that the serial killer is you. A good horror game using psychological factors to scare you is silent hill 2. Get some taste people.

Fixed camera angle horror games need to make a come back, something about not having control over the camera, giving you less ability to see where a threat might be coming from, felt so terrifying. Good to see someone else appreciates the stylistic choice
yeah i dont see why they stopped using this technique, it worked superb with old resident evil and silent hill, there is something scary about a monster chasing you and the non controlable camera
There are masterpieces using this technique like Haunting Ground and Rule of Rose, but not so popular. If you try to dig in PS1 & 2 era, you will see plenty of them.
Try "The Medium" fox Xbox or PC. It released in January this year and has a fixed camera. Not only is it heavily inspired by the old Silent Hill games, but the music composer is also the same. I just finished it and to me, it's a masterpiece.
This. It's been quite a while since I play a PS2 Japanese horror game
@@unskilled822 yeah i like the camera in old resident evil, even though the control like shit
I love everything about this. It feels otherworldly and the stalker chase at around 11:15 is brilliant.
we need more games like this, it’s terrifying. It makes uncomfy turning my back to the dark
It isn’t even a jumpscare, you already know the monster is coming
But it’s something about the quiet, almost realistic setting and the fact that we are powerless to change anything makes it worse
A scary atmosphere will almost always top jump scares in terms of how scary they are
@@plugshirt1684 Agreed. Jumpscares are only scary for the moment that they happen, atmospheres like this keep the paranoia, stress and anxiety up for the whole time
@@eeeeeeeeeeeee9651 yeah though I also disagree with how a lot of people say jumpscare ruin horror games as if it has a good atmosphere and does everything well jumpscare being in it don’t take away from anything the problem only arises when you only try to create fear through jumpscares. I think the best example of it working would be spooky’s jumpscare mansion where ironically the jumpscares aren’t the main focus at all and are used really well while still having a good atmosphere and having good horror
Also the fixed camera perspectives resemble security camera footage. We usually only see security camera footage when something bad has happened.

These old simplistic graphics are always the creepiest lol. Grew up playing games in the 90s, and was an avid fan of horror point and click adventures. Those games never had to rely on cheap jump scares, just creeps you the hell out with its aesthetics and vibes. Just look at Diablo 1, dated graphics, but by far the most atmospheric in the series.
I live in Japan and they got the aesthetic spot on.
Me too and exactly. This game would not go over well with the mamatomos.
Seeing as the protagonist is an elementary school girl, completely alone and probably trying to get home from school (since she's still wearing her randoseru and helmet) but not being able to because she can't get rid of her stalker, it's impossible to ignore the way it resembles the true horrors of real life. The TV scene had disturbing messages that I couldn't help but relate to long-lasting trauma, but as a whole the sequence was so surreal it took me away from the parallels for a moment, which I welcomed. Solid game with superb aesthetics and spine-chilling directing, especially in that part where we see everything from the monster's PoV.

This game looks so good, I think having the streets completely empty with no passerby’s really brings the atmosphere to the next level. There’s just something inherently creepy about places that are meant to be populated, and ARE populated (since there’s clearly cars and camera angles), but are presented as completely deserted. I liked the addition of the cameras zooming in at certain moments too, it gives a sense of eerie clarity to what’s happening and feels like you’re a helpless bystander watching it all happen.

I really really REALLY love the aesthetic. It feels photo realistic even though it's got the ps1 thing going on.. seriously a major accomplishment to walk that tight rope between the 2 so well
You remember No Face from spirited away? This is him now. Feel old yet?
Considering how few comments are mentioning him, probably because they haven't watched Spirited Away? Yes.
first thought also! Annnnnd yeah feel old af
His hands grown so much, knitting 24/7 obviously does something to him... Damn that witch 🙄
why would i feel old? i cant remember how old i am anymore lol
I fucking love this comment.
Crappy theory: the fact there is absolutely nobody in the streets in the early evening seems to imply that the girl is somehow stuck in a different dimension - either as a dead spirit in purgatory or literally walked into a pocket dimension - that is manipulated or owned by that shadow monster.
Imagine if this happened to people in real life. There would be no way to disprove it.
or simply the monster killed everybody and the girl is the only one left...
@Vitor Cavalcanti ahaha thats why i said crappy
The first theory I had is simple but terrifying: the girl is stalked and then abused by a man that she sees like a demon. There are no people and it's late night because the game is only based about how a terrorized child would see a real nightmare, alone and in the dark. And I think that home at the end is just his house
I don't think Japanese lore has a purgatory or how a child would end up in one. Likely was brought to another realm. You only hear about hell and demons in their culture nowadays, nor is religion remotely popular, so this might be their bleak outlook on things.
thank you for uploading this without commentary and talking over the whole thing
It's absolutely fascinating to look at, the old vhs/cctv footage looking visuals, the dread closing in, the fact that the playes view isnt equal to the monsters view also made it seem less gamelike and gave a sort of feel like some murder footages caught on camera
Only downside is that gameplay is kinda hard. Even though the game is simple the view makes it way harder to navigate and control
"If you've seen the individual in this footage, please report it to the authorities."
The footage:
The fact that this game exist already scares me.
One of the best comments
👍😁 😨
I love the titles of your videos as they are literally what I would search for if I cant find a certain thing
Why is this game not top selling in American markets?? This is literally the scariest game I’ve seen, the game is visually amazing, and could easily sell for the best horror game!
The way the cameras are positioned is something I’ve never seen from a horror game before, it’s an amazing thing!
The sound the monster's presence makes is *HARROWING*
11:13 dude, that chase camera view with the red light and the ghost's shadow is intense
it's like a second person pov. the pov is from the one who is chasing you
@@maureendadivas5968 yes!
it's so cool!
there a youtube video talking about this. i forgot if it was from GTA but it's where the screen POV is from the car who is chasing you. it was indeed really cool!
@@maureendadivas5968 I think I've seen that video too, like you said it was kinda GTA-esque but must be only one mission
tbh, this is so retro aesthetic and I'm living for it
Why nobody pays attention to that 2nd person camera angel. Dude, one of the scariest angel, one of the best angel cause it was the view of the monster what an incredible creative mind to do that. Start from 11:25
Love how you have no clear way of knowing when you're safe besides the monster walking off screen, and even then, there's the possibility of it turning around
I don't remember the last time I heard sound design this successfully terrifying in an indie horror game. Amazing
Honestly reminds me of fatal frame
Outlast did a great job on Sound design as a Indie game.
9:53 Tiannamen Square, 1989: also damn, the scream. Horrifyingly well done, and the horrific visuals.
What was it doing to her?
Camera Angels reminded me a whole lot about early "Resident Evil" games.
I was thinking the same
I love how the camera is in one place for each area like a security camera.
Its like resident evil did
More like an 80's-90's game.
its weird how every comment uses the same “i love”
we get it you love details no need to flex and brag
It's actually a type of rarely used camera angle called Fixed-Cameras. As the first guy said, it was popularized by Resident Evil but has been used in other games similar, mostly other survival horror games like Dino Crisis.
@@andrada9506
They're just expressing their opinion. Is that so wrong?
11:04 Ah yes a 2nd person view, we need this more often In games. Especially horror.
There's this incredible underated game on PS2 called Siren that has exactly this. Different spirits have taken over a small town and the survivors that you play as have the ability to see through the eyes of nearby monsters.
@@ShapelessHail Siren Blood curse is a great game the only reason I saw it was because Pewdiepie played it.
To be fair there aren’t many instances where second person would work with a game in a way that made any sense. There are some like this game but they are a lot more limited then first and third person
That part is so so scary and well made 😭😭
I got the sightjacking shibito vibes from the Siren series on this scene 😰
The fact you see this in someone elses view, not in third person or first person, but someone watching from the cameras. Yeah you move the character but it also gives you the pressure of the fact you can only watch and not save the little girl
最後のクリーチャーの視点で逃げていくシーン凄すぎる、、、、

See? No inventory, no sanity bar, no resources, no lighting mechanics, simple a big bad guy chasing someone as raw as it can get, but when is done properly is all you need
People wouldn't pay 70 dollars on consoles to play this for a 10 hour campaign tho...😅
@@marshalmaycry9063 the concept of the game doesn't last for 10 hours, neither does it needs to be console exclusive, don't need to sell as triple AAA or be as famous as one to be better executed
@@punusername3445 relax buddy. stop exaggerating. You sounds like one of those "NINTENDO HIRE THIS MAN" youtube comments.
@@marshalmaycry9063 I'm relaxed, and i don't feel like asking a company to hire someone lol, i only commented why i appreciated the game you basically said the game wouldn't sell so i said why it doesn't need to sell like triple A to be good.
@@punusername3445 buddy you went on a rant about sanity bars and inventory screens😅
The low resolution makes it extra terrifying.
The actual images turned into 3d environments is the coolest part to me
