The way the ghost lady starts running when she sees you, and the sudden loud burst of the music, is honestly really scary.
Edit: Can't believe I keep getting replies after this many years, all I like to say is I have found this game super charming and thought the ending was super funny, with all the characters being silly.

I know most horror games it’s not very upsetting or scary but this one gives me that feeling I get at the climax of a nightmare right before I wake up

So the story I can pull from all of this is that the girl had an older sister, or mother perhaps, who committed suicide. This is referenced by the multiple instances of seeing a woman fall from a building.
The girl, I think, witnessed it first hand, seeing her head split open (or at least get visibly distorted) as she hit the ground. This is why the bloody figure (as well as the game over screen) show her face distorting like it’s about to split open.
This could also explain why the girl was at the shrine to begin with and why she can’t leave until she prays at it. The older woman isn’t really blocking her from leaving, it’s her guilt and memories of her that are.
Much in the same way the woman isn’t actually killing the girl every time you get a game over, rather it’s probably a metaphor for how she’s getting overwhelmed by guilt and other emotions caused by memories of her sister (or mother).
The last little detail is how, when you finally get home, there’s a little boy(?) waiting to greet you at the door, yet he simply ragdolls over when you walk by. Could be her brother, and represent how the girl doesn’t even care about him anymore because all she can focus on is the woman who committed suicide.
That’s my take on it anyways. These kinds of tropes are pretty common in Japanese-horror-style games anyways.
Interesting theory actually. I presume the distorted head visuals is definitely something a child would imagine or be haunted by after seeing such a terrible scene of someone's face splitting open. And dang it's so unsettling it's gross.
What about the car hitting the little girl at the start? Could that mean she commited suicide by running infront of a car?

I think I can actually get that theory. Was the building that the other girl fell from, the same building as Kimono-Girl’s apartment home? But at a different angle? Because if so, that that could probably explain why when the Kimono girl attempts to walk further up the building, the player is immediately ambushed by the Ghost. It could symbolize that because she was traumatized by the event, Her fear is so severe that it’s even stopping her from going up to the top of the building.

The fact this game almost feels like an actual nightmare you could have is weirdly incredible.
Like it really feels like one of the those random terror dreams. Even the game over screen is something I feel like you'd wake up in a cold sweat after seeing in a nightmare.
When I was a kid I remember having a nightmare with a game over screen after I died. The grudge killed me, btw.

I remember all of it. I was sleeping with the covers on top of my head with a hole for my face to breathe. Suddenly, the lights in my room turn on. I was too scared to look out so I just stayed out. Then I hear quick footsteps like in 6:04 in the video. For some reason I had rear view mirrors on the sides of my bed and I saw her flash across it onto the top of my bed. She then kicked me off and I died. A game over screen flashed over a third person view of my corpse with her still standing on top of my bed.
I didn’t go back to sleep again that night.

I had dreams where I fall too.
In general they are worse though, for instance I once had a dream of a bear with some human like denture come into my room and tell me that I will never leave my bedroom. There was strange organ music playing in the other room. I also had another dream where there was a woman with no head at the bathroom where I work and I had to clean up the bloody mess. Another one with a high pitched voice from the closet of my childhood home saying they wanted my mother while there was a powerful storm outside. These are just some of the ones I can remember.

Coming back to this, it’s not the jumpscare that’s frightening, -it’s the doppler effect and inhuman speed of the lady as she runs towards you. It’s fact that you could get so far, only to be stalked effortlessly and taken down in seconds.

I actually genuinely enjoy the surprise deaths. It feels like they don't occur very often in horror games, usually it's just the spooky monster that gets the jump on you. But I knew I was going to like at least some part of this game when the protagonist died so suddenly, and by something completely unexpected. Attempting to cross the sidewalk only to be gruesomely mauled by a car in an instant? And then that jumpcut to the game over screen? Neat.

I think this game was like the nightmare once i had when i was a kid, there was a tall Ghost Girl chasing me, and the place was so red just like this game and i was alone at the house, after that i tried looking outside, cuz of curiousity i tried going outside and, i saw the Ghost passed by, and my heart beated fast and when i try to escape, it's like my feet are getting tired (it means that im almost awake) and she was really fast asf and when i tried to wake up, i keep hearing her scream and i can't escape my dream, and i tried to wake up again, and her scream was getting lower and lower, and now i woke up and drink some water and i tried to sleep again, and im still in the same Dream, and when i wake up, my heart still beated fast, i mean like.. really fast, and i was really sweaty and paranoid! I speculate that the ghost might be a possible future of the little girl who you're playing as, and she turns into the ghost at the end. That's why the goldfish says "This is not your home." It's a terribly dark apartment, and if things go dark, there will be famine and death. The little girl shouldn't be there, and because she's there, the ghost shows up. She might be running out to kill herself since it's such a dark apartment, that she can't see anything or feel anything but fear, a lack of commitment to life, and dark.
This game is the most cursed thing I've seen.

The dark, deep feeling inside your body and your head. Mixture of light confusion. sensory overload from the loud noises. Loads of things. But the overall vibe is genuine impending doom. A sense that you’re absolutely fucked no matter what, it’s unnatural and disturbing
Watching this video i could feel my anxiety rising with every minute. Then at the end in that dark ass house when the ghost girl just fucking appears and charges at you i screamed bloody murder and covered my face with my hands lmao. The developers did an excellent job of building up a sense of dread throughout the game.

Congrats, This 9 minute video has given me the most jumpscares I have ever received in any game ever. I was just about to click off the video until the first "bus" jumpscare, then I proceeded tp get jumpscared like 4 more times lmao. When a game reveals that it will literally jumpscare you at random, you have no choice but to expect a scare any literal second. Jumpscare games always either do it really good or really bad. I would say this game does it pretty good imo.

I used to have dreams like this when I was very young, I sort of remember one, It was dark and I was running up the stairs for some reason with my siblings but when I reached the top everyone had disappeared and I looked down the stairs to find complete darkness then a red light turned on from the corner of the upstairs living room, I don’t really remember what happened after but I do remember the terrifying feeling of being alone in darkness not knowing whether or not it was reality

The style of this game reminds me of that old Japanese clay animation video, "Chainsaw Maid"
For some reason, I absolutely love this version of the game. It's so fucking weird, bizarre, and unpolished. It captures the feeling of an inescapable nightmare SO Well, and just Oozes vibes of freaky flash games made by Japanese authors. It just has that kind of surreal, unnatural vibe. And while the updated, full version of the game still feels like this sort of, honestly, it's way less scary. It feels like it was made to be a little easier. They kinda just seem to explain everything to you, the enemies seem slower and less sudden and urgent, the visuals and sounds changed a lot and just generally it feels much more streamlined. I kinda liked it better when everything was so weird and confusing to you, as this is what nightmares truly feel like. But I suppose the dev made it the way they wanted to, and that's totally fine, I don't have a problem with that. I just feel like this version is much more scary.
