  • One of my favorite recent patterns offered from Rough Ryder is the Cub Lockback. In this episode I look at the latest offering, the Copper Swirl Cub Lockback and give a little background history on the pattern.

I like the copper swirl and the celestial series. Really unique look to them. Thanks for sharing the history of the cub pattern. Maybe someday they will get rid of the big”R” bolster. I am glad Rough Ryder is keeping the old patterns alive also. Thank you for another great video!

Great video Tobias. I love that pattern also. As you know the RR1585 is a Copper cub that doesn't have the big r. I did that video of Down with the Big R, and only afterwards realized people might think I was talking about Big Red. 😆

I got a squirrel hunter for Christmas as a kid in about '78 or so, but I as I remember it was marked Made in Italy. The blade etch and acrylic pearl were the same.

I love small, traditional-looking lockbacks. Very useful and won't scare people. The Boker Magnum Jewel is another popular, affordable knife in the same general category, although the blade isn't quite as wide as a Squirrel Hunter.

As long as the RR quality is there, I'm indifferent about the "R." The only thing I've noticed about the "R" is the pivot pin on some patterns is in the top of the "R" but the radius of the "R" doesn't match the radius of the pin, and you can see that on some patterns. But otherwise I'm happy with RR.

But you are a big fan of the Cub Lockback. lol It is a good looking knife even with the big R and the bolsters. I found a Frost cub lockback from the 80's decked out in camo Frostwood, a little beauty. I don't have an affinity towards Cubs as you do but I really like that old Frost, very well made from Japan. Thanks for the history and for showing us your cubs Tobias.

Maybe they poke thin copper mesh (with some holes cut out of it) down into the acrylic? I think I’ll pick up a cub or two as soon as the big R goes away. I looked for info on the Gutmann version, and found that the box had a zip code, which puts it after 1964, and G.C. registered “Squirrel Hunter” as a trademark in 1977. I wonder how RR’s version came about.

A great video, thanks! The RR Cub Lockback is indeed a capable knife, we were several hours from home and had car trouble. The air dam had fallen down and was scraping on the road. Lacking any proper tools, I used my Cub to cut through the tough plastic and remove the offending piece so that we could get home. It was a tough task for such a little knife, but it got the job done.

Cub Lock backs look like pretty and sturdy little knives. Attractive coves and sharp drop point blades enables them to do most things as well as bigger knives. It’s easier to skin a squirrel with small knife than a big one. My Pappy use to say; if you can shoot a limit of squirrels with a rifle you are not going have much trouble shooting one deer come deer season. It is easier for a kid to learn using a knife safely if they start out with a simple little one.
It is also easier for Adults too; I always carry a little pocket knife for that reason. I likely have a couple more since I like collecting knives. But, most times if I need to use a knife it’s always the littlest one 90% of the time. What is the idea of you needing knife so big and sharp if you dropped it on your foot it would cut toe off? Try peeling an apple with one of those things. When you get older you should get smarter not dumber. 🎇😺🎇🦉

As I said in a previous comment, I have gotten two or three of the Cub models which I absolutely can't close with thumb pressure on the back release. I have to press with considerable weight, against a table or counter edge to unlock the back springs. These particular Cubs just aren't safe. You seem to have gotten a good one this time, so I may take a chance on it.
I really enjoy your comments and expertise, by the way.

I really like Japanese made knives (I’ve got a series of them playing just now), but the only Cub I have is a RR with a Ti coated blade. I carried a 3” lock-back called a Silver Tern (Japan made) as my main knife for over a decade. Looked very like the 308, but with a single blade and steel covers. Gerber (also made in Japan, by Moki) did one called the Silver Knight. Unfortunately, my Silver Tern went AWOL whilst I was in Spinal Rehab 17 years ago.

Another reason to like the Cub profile, as well as the
Taylor Brand you show is that the back corner of the blade is buried in the bolster when the knife is closed. Just my opinion, of course.

That’s hilarious, I had no idea about their “squirrel knife” heritage. Those Japanese knife makers must have imagined Americans dissecting little woodland creatures with little pearl-handled knives. Rough Ryder should lean into this.

Yeah I could see them coming out early as the 40s after the depression. By the 80s squirrel hunting was going out of popularity. Nobody needed to produce meat for the table as they did in the early to mid 20th
